Ricardo was wonderful. He did an amazing job of painting my bedroom, was quick and clean and left the space tidier than he found it. I would absolutely recommend him and will use him again for my next project (assuming that he is available)... Brilliant.

Keith did a fantastic job painting the walls in my apartment. He gave me a very competitive estimate (I had 2 other professionals give me estimates as well) and then came in under budget! He was extremely considerate, lovely to talk to, and proud of his work. I will be recommending him to everyone I know in the Bay Area!

We were really pleased with the work Matt did. We had a handful of projects that he completed for us: -Painting and installing trim and a dowel in our laundry -Adding reinforcements, a bike hook and shelving to a storage unit -Hanging floating kitchen shelves He has a great attention to detail when it comes to things like tight seams, clean edges and making things level. He was also on time, friendly, polite and cleaned up after himself. I will note that while we did pay the amount he initially quoted us, it worked out to more than his listed rate of $50/hr, but still seemed reasonable for the job. We'd be happy to use Matt again for future projects!

Vyron and his team did an excellent job for my hallway bathroom and molding and doors for three other rooms. They did a pretty awesome job in tiling our bath room and fixing the drain problem considering our tile is quite big. They are very polite and easy to work with and they do show cares to our home and was able to fulfill all our requests with high quality job. Vyron also came back to finish a bunch of small stuff and brought me the leftover paint I needed and two duct covers they accidentally sprayed when painting the door. This is true customer service and will definitely use again or recommend to friends!

I recently moved into a new place and needed two rooms painted ASAP. Mauricio responded to my posting in less than 12 hours, came to my house the next morning to give me an estimate, and then started work the morning after that. Both times he came to my apartment, Mauricio was right on time, very friendly, and very responsive via text message. The walls he was painting had a fair amount of patchwork to do, and they look fantastic. Mauricio and his assistant finished the two-room job within a few hours and did great work. I would definitely recommend Mauricio and use his services again.

I have used Ochoa Painting for many years now. They have worked on many of our investment properties and those of many of our clients. I have found them to be punctual, courteous and have always worked to keep the premises clean during and upon completion of the work. Their pricing has always been fair and competitive. Will continue to use them.

Eduardo and his team have decades of vast experience. Prior to forming his own business, Eduardo was in charge of the 'A-Team' for one of the highest regarded painting companies in the East Bay. We initially met when we hired his previous employer to paint the exterior of our home/ garage. Having a newborn child, we were very concerned that the paint job was handled thoughtfully by experts trained in effectively handling the homes with lead paint. Eduardo and he crew did an excellent job. Since then (nearly 11 years later) we have reached to Eduardo for: Interior paint/repairs when putting previous home on the market, move-in interior paint job for subsequent home (nearly nine years ago and still looks great!), exterior two-story duplex for my mother-in-law, wallpaper stripping, light fixture installation, plumbing work, wall patching, dry wall replacement, dry rot repair, deck repair/restoration even toilet replacement. If Eduardo can't do it, he knows someone that can (his contact assisted my mother-in-law with an emergency busted hot water heater replacement)! He does tend to book out so it's helpful plan you job in advance if you have a rigid timeline. If you are a bit flexible he can sometimes sneak in an interior job if Mother Nature isn't cooperating for his exterior jobs. He snuck in a three-day impromptu stairwell, bathroom, hallway and laundry room job for us last week, spaces that we had neglected to freshen up prior to our move in in 2009. Couldn't be happier with the results! I have recommended him countless times over the years to friends, neighbors and family and I have only heard positive feedback about him and the high quality of his work. He is professional and trustworthy. Bonus: having Eduardo and his team work in/around our home is always a pleasure as they are friendly & respectful and my kids adore 'em!

We had Ryan over yesterday to repair 3 interior doors in a very old and actually historic San Franciscan Victorian house. In addition to the three interior doors, Ryan painted the front door which had also just been replaced. His attention to detail was great, there were constant adjustments to make sure everything fit, latched, matched, didn't drag, looked great, etc. His response was prompt, he replied almost immediately and was available to start the very next day. He came prepared for the job, from start to finish. Ryan is very up front and fair in terms of compensation. You will have zero issue with the transparency and fairness of his bids. It should also be noted that this is a very old building. The areas where the door hinges connected to the wall/door frame were extremely dilapidated, the wood was old and and over drilled. It was like putty. But Ryan rocked it. Not only did Ryan pay close attention to the style of the Victorian building and matched the details perfectly, his finished product was seamless. You can't even tell that work had been done. There wasn't even dust on the floor. It was legit, honest good work. 100% recommend.

I hired Juan to remove the popcorn texture from my condo and to prep the ceiling for painting. The whole job took about 2 and a half days. I was very impressed with how professional and punctual Juan was. Juan's work exceeded my expectations and I would love to work with him again in the future. Keep up the good work, Juan!

Kyle did a great job. His bid was competitive and the quality and detail of his patching and repair as well as his painting was outstanding. There were several setbacks due to other contractors works and Kyle helped re-patch work he had already completed. I highly recommend KDF Painting.

Not looking forward to getting the kitchen painted, we reluctantly emptied the entire contents of the cupboards out into the living room, and expected to have problems breathing for a week or so. But our experience with Lamorinda Painting was a totally pleasant surprise! They showed up exactly on time; took pains to cover floors and personal items; sealed up the target space for painting so that we had no problems breathing; did a thorough preparation to all the wood throughout, filling all the bad spots, etc; and finally put on two coats of lovely satin finish paint. All of which made the kitchen look beautifully brand new. And this was accomplished reasonably, with good humor, and in record time. What more could one ask for! Many, many thanks to Mike and his helper, and all very best wishes!

Edgar and his crew did a great job painting several rooms in our house and touching up dings in other places. They were able to accommodate our schedule and worked the weekend to do the job. His quote was reasonable and the paint results are great. The crew cleaned up nicely too. I'd recommend Baran Painting if you want good value and quality.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost for an interior painter ranges between $450 and $900. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls. Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $200 to $2,500. The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted. Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards. In one area pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much does a painter charge per room?

The cost to paint a room will vary based on the size of the room, the type of paint you select, any ceiling or trim work needed, and any repairs needed. If no repairs or other additional work is needed, painting a room with contractor-grade paint could range from $1 to $2 per square foot, including materials. Selecting a luxury paint (some cost more than $100 per gallon) will certainly increase your house painting costs. Here are some additional examples of average house painting costs, per room:

  • 12x12 room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 12x12 room with an 8-foot ceiling: about $100
  • 14x16 master bedroom with a 9-foot ceiling: about $150
  • 14x16 master bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 16x16 living room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $175
  • 16x16 living room with a 20-foot ceiling: starting at $225
