Praised for his “sonorous voice” (SF Gate), “delightful spontaneity” (Voce di meche) and singing with "compelling beauty and pathos" (SF Classical Voice) Brazilian-American countertenor Matheus Coura performed as Narcissus in ...two united in a single soul… with the San Francisco Ballet, Giuliano in Cavalli's Eliogabalo with West Edge Opera, the title role in Handel’s Ottone, Andronico (Tamerlano), and Bertarido (Rodelinda) at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music; and Teucro in Ifigenia in Aulide with Ars Minerva. Coura is a winner of the Cooper-Bing Competition, and is a finalist in the upcoming Bethlehem Bach Competition.
I am an operatic countertenor and a dedicated music educator. I am passionate about teaching a dependable and individual vocal technique in a fun way that enables students to chase after their music aspirations.
My students have been accepted into vocal and musical theater departments of prestigious arts magnet schools and pre-college programs at the Manhattan School of Music, Ruth Asawa School of the Arts, Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, Lavilla School of the Arts, and ensembles such as the San Francisco Boys Chorus and the Jacksonville Children's Chorus.
My students consistently earned superior ratings, and “Best in Show” for the Musical Theatre and Classical Voice categories at the Florida State Solo & Ensemble festival. In theory, I’ve tutored students in scoring 4s and 5s in their AP Music Theory Exams for college credit.
Some of my students have also earned music scholarships at the University of Michigan, and Calvin College. Other students have successfully produced CD's, performed in rock and indie bands, and also pursued musical opportunities in college. I’m very proud to have been a part of the journey of these students, and my heart is so full to know that they’re spreading the joy of music wherever they go. This is incredibly rewarding for me!

I started taking lessons with Matheus out of curiosity. My primary art form is dance, and I've also played the flute for many years, but I always assumed "I just couldn't sing". I did a lot of musical theater growing up but never related to the singing and really struggled to hit notes and hold harmonies. And Matheus has amazingly shown me that I can in fact sing! In even just my first lesson I came away with a sense of possibility that I never realized was there. His love for the art and desire to teach is clear, he is very enthusiastic when helping you explore and refine your sound, but he is not overly praising either - his corrections are somatic, precise, and really do help you to get better. I am astonished to find myself now enjoying singing arias from classical Italian repertoire, which not too long ago I would have thought surely impossible. Highly recommend!

I worked with Matheus briefly as a coach. I'm an experienced singer, but he helped me to simplify my process and create the same results with greater consistency. In one lesson, I walked away with immediate ideas about how to improve and practice the concepts he gave me. I couldn't recommend him more!

I met Matheus Coura during my senior year of high school when he came as a visiting vocal instructor to assist our drama club leading up to our presentation of Willy Wonka Jr. He clicked with us as students almost instantly, jumping right in and improving our group as a whole in ways that we couldn’t even imagine at the time. For me personally, he sat down with me almost daily as I struggled through my part, slowing down to make certain that I understood before we continued. Matheus explained things to me in a way that was tailored to my particular learning habits and helped me not only in fulfilling my part, but also to lay the foundation of my future. When I got to college, I auditioned and was accepted into the University of West Florida Theatrical Arts department as an actor. My professors did not expect me to be able to sing and moved forward with this expectation in mind. However, when it came time to audition for our spring musical, The Little Mermaid, I had to audition for a role in order to keep my place in the program. To the surprise of my professors, I was able to not only have a piece prepared and practiced, but I was also able to learn a new piece of music and audition with it with only a few minutes of rehearsal, securing a role during my first year in the program. The foundation laid by Matheus when I was still in high school helped to launch me into a role in college alongside those who had been receiving professional instruction from a young age, enabling me to stand beside them as a peer, and I will be forever thankful for him.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I offer complimentary 30-minute trial lessons for prospective students! If it's a good fit, let's go from there.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
A first lesson is an explorative process that helps us to define the kind of work we will do together in lessons. Typically, I like to start with hearing you sing a song that you feel you sing pretty well to get a feel for your technique, artistry, etc. (If you don't have a song yet, we can pick you one!)
From there, I'll give you some pointers and see if we can make it a little easier. Next, I like to talk about your personal goals for your singing, and then tailor our lesson times to help support your long and short term singing goals in a way that fits your lifestyle!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of North Florida, a Masters in Voice from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and a Professional Studies Diploma in Historical Performance (Baroque) from San Francisco Conservatory of Music. I was the intern for education with the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra for 2 years.
