Laura is a super talented designer and seamstress, and I would highly recommend her work. She made me a few pieces of beautiful, one-of-a-kind handmade clothes and I'll be going back for more. Laura is just one of those people who has a fantastic eye for design and fashion - and the ability to actually make from scratch exactly what you want. I needed a great-fitting, perfect-for-all-uses black skirt, so Laura measured and fitted me, knew exactly what fabric to get, and made the skirt - and it's my new #1 skirt! My mom has a favorite vest from the '80s that she hasn't been able to find in any stores, so she mailed it to Laura and Laura made three beautiful vests in various fabrics in the exact same design pattern!

We had our bridesmaid dresses altered, since the same dress didn't fit everyone correctly. It was great because Hemster sent a tailor to us to get fitted! Our dresses turned out well.

I am SO glad I found Perfect Fit Design & Alterations. To be a cliche, I've had terrible past experiences with tailors who gave me below-the-value-work w/ suits, suit blazers, dress pants and trench coats (wedding-wear, work-wear or gala-wear). Terri of PFD&A provides quality work. If I may need intricate tailoring, she is my first choice to hire. Also, I wanna note that on Thumbtack, this platform elicits businesses to provide an instant quotation. With tailoring, it's not that simple: One can't just get an instant quotation about an article of clothing with a specific tailoring job based on just describing it. A tailor needs to physically see the actual article of clothing, to make an assessment. If you need to know more, just ask questions; get to the point. Terri is great answering back. I took in a coat to have it less looking boxy; she did a fantastic job. I am contemplating now on hiring her again to see if she can fix previous tailor's shortcomings. Thank you, Terri. I recommended you to my friends. Hope you hear from them.

Ms. Sharifa responded to my search for an expert seamstress/tailor to teach me sewing and embellishing techniques. I can’t quite express the extent of her graciousness and professionalism because you will have to meet her to see for yourself. She is reliable and punctual for all appointments. When we sew, she is kind and patient with my learning curve. Conversation is never idle but at the same time, not too much. I have observed her talent with designing and tailoring beautiful hand beaded gowns and suits. Her work is truly superb with a focus on high quality materials and meticulous workmanship. I highly recommend!

Kat Hemza was a seamstress and design assistant for my custom jacket business for over a year. She was technically skilled, and also had a good design sense and knew when to question something. She is prompt and has a great work ethic. She keeps meticulous records, and is quite organized, as well as being creative. I enjoyed working with her very much, and, sadly, had to let her go because she needed more hours and deserved more compensation than what I could afford.

I had chosen to ask Sandhya to help me design beautiful brocade fabrics I had purchased into kurtas and also transform a lengha I had into an anarkali suit on my behalf for me. I had known Sandhya through friend for a few years, and I had held Sandhya's fashion design sense in high regard after having seen some stunning pieces she had made for our mutual friend. I remember being blown away at the time by the quality of her work. I find Sandhya to have a colorful, vibrant, timeless, classy and a joyful style sense. I particularly love and connect to her appreciation of blending fabrics, textures and prints to create dynamic garments. Because she's experienced in fashion design, comes from a family experienced in fashion design, and had recently completed her degree in fashion, these credentials made it that much more easier to trust she would deliver high quality clothing! When I met with Sandhya to set expectations around the garments I wanted her to design, I ended up having a whimsical evening with working with her to my surprise. It was a really exciting experience discussing what I wanted to have made and sharing photographs of designs I love. She took very thorough notes and communicated with me often along with photos as she worked through the designs herself. Surprisingly, I received nearly 80% of the garments I had requested relatively quickly. I've so far received everything but the anarkali suit, and I've already started to set aside 2-3 more fashion design projects I want to work with her on. Sandhya has a wide set of skills and interests including Western clothing, clutches & jewelry too. After seeing a preview of the jewelry she's both curated and custom designed I've already decided to move forward purchasing 3 sets of earrings from her too! I trust I will enjoy the pieces I've had made and the jewelry I will be purchasing for decades. For anyone else who comes from having had personal experience tailoring and designing garments with experienced tailors, etc., it's a breath of fresh air to work with someone here in the States who understands both Western and Indian fashion itself! I also think for anyone who has never had any garments tailored before, but have a love for fashion to definitely work with Sandhya because they'll be in good hands if they do!

Great experience. My boyfriends struggled with his style and buying clothes for a long time. and we discovered we've been buying him the wrong sizes too. It's great understanding what to expect from clothes, now that we know what to look for, how and where to get the right fit. Incredible tailoring services too. Not just suits, but jeans and tees are fitting perfect. Love it!

Having a professional & passionate fashion designer, stylist & seamstress can save you a lot of time and effort when you are struggling to find that perfect outfit for that special occasion. Sometimes you just want to look different and stand out from a cookie cutter crowd by wearing that special outfit designed just for you! All the pants in the store are always too short or too long for you, familiar with that problem? Aleksandra is your solution for all these problems, and her services are only one click away! I used Aleksandra‘s services on numerous occasions. Every time she was with me every step of the way from designing my outfit, to shopping for the material, to adjusting it to fit perfectly. Finally, every time I walked out of her studio feeling special in her unique creations and you will as well…it’s guaranteed. I always receive numerous compliments whenever I wear her creations and my favorite one is “it fits you like a glove.” I usually just smile and think… well yes, of course, it is made just for me. :) Aleksandra regularly hems all of my pants and jeans as well. Aleksandra is not only completely awesome, but she is also very patient with her clients (as a picky one, that was very important to me). As picture is worth a thousand words, please look at the attached photos of me wearing Aleksandra’s creations in various occasions from costume party to the bachelorette party, from my favorite jeans dress to the long black dress for every occasion. Aleksandra always makes me look good and manages to hide all my figure imperfections. Thank you Aleksandra! PS. Aleksandra’s wedding dresses are breathtaking! I hope that one day I will have a chance to walk down the aisle in her creation.

I was looking for someone to tailor fit a few dress shirts and pants, mostly slimming down and shortening. Lynne was very approachable and easy to work with. I was able to meet with her within a week of posting my project. She was very courteous in measuring each item that I brought in and would check with me on how I liked the new fit. She has been in this industry for a very long time and does everything she can to ensure that the customer is happy. Her prices are very reasonable and had a quick turnaround time. I would highly recommend her for alterations and any of the other services they offer. Thanks Lynne!

Rachael is an amazing designer, seamstress, and artist. She has helped me through the conception and design process to figure out what it was I was looking for and has created multiple pieces/costumes for me for various events (Burning man, Symbiosis, Sunset, Halloween, etc...). In addition, she has helped me alter bodysuits and other pieces in the past to better fit my style and body type. I have always been happy with the work she produces and DEFINITELY plan to utilize Rachael's services in the future for other projects and costume pieces!

our san francisco shop is nestled at the crux of an eclectic mixture of the jackson square, financial district, north beach, and chinatown neighborhoods. we believe that by being close to more than one enriching culture at any given moment, that we’re able to sharpen and refine our methods and techniques to appeal to a wider audience with hopes of exposing the individual to a new and innovative way of marrying culture and commerce. tailors’ keep is a physical representation of passion-fueled craft. without passion, ideas are shallow. without ideas, passions are selfish. our mission is to invite you into our world where one is able to create alongside of another with the end goal of developing a piece of beautiful clothing.

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

          What do seamstresses do?

Seamstresses provide tailoring, alteration and custom sewing for clothing or costumes. Seamstresses can reshape clothing that is too big or too small so that it fits properly — for example, hemming pants that are too long or bringing in the waistband of pants or a skirt that is too large. Seamstresses can also provide more complex alterations such as adding tucks to shape a dress or bringing in the body of a shirt. More time and expertise will be required for challenging fabric such as silk or clothing with lining, like a blazer or lined slacks. Seamstresses are also skilled in altering wedding dresses and other formal wear. The time and skill required for these types of alterations is greater than for basic tasks like hemming, so be sure to find an experienced seamstress to handle your special items.

Many seamstresses can also custom-make clothing for you. To come up with the design, you can bring in a pattern you like or an item of clothing you want the seamstress to replicate, or ask the seamstress to create a pattern for you. You can bring your own unique design to life with the help of a seamstress. There is no formal job training required to be a seamstress; many learn to sew and design from practical experience. For larger projects, like tailoring a suit, always be sure to review portfolios of work and read about the seamstress’s experience before committing.

          How much do seamstresses charge?

The price for seamstress services will vary depending on the type of work you have done. The national average rate for a seamstress or tailor is $150-$280. Simple projects like repairing holes and hemming jeans usually have flat rates; larger projects, such as sewing custom creations, altering suits or altering wedding dresses, are typically priced based on the specifics of the fabric and pattern and the amount of work time needed. Here are a few examples of tailor and seamstress average costs:

          • Shorten sleeves of a dress shirt: $19.
          • Shorten jacket sleeves: $23 (without buttons) to $28 (with buttons).
          • Take in the body of a jacket: $40 (two seams) to $52 (three seams).
          • Take in a dress shirt: $20.
          • Adjust the shoulders of a jacket: $35.
          • Hem a skirt or dress: $10-$14.
          • Take in or let out a skirt or pair of pants: $15 (unlined) to $20 (lined) or $25 (with a zipper).
          • Shorten top-stitched pants: $10.
          • Shorten cuffed pants: $14.
          • Shorten lined pants: $14.
          • Shorten lined and cuffed pants: $18.
          • Take in a sheath dress: $45.
          • Restitch a fraying seam: $5.
          • Replace buttons: 50 cents each.
          • Move a button: $2.
          • Add a hook and eye: 50 cents per set.

Are you supposed to tip a seamstress?

Tipping seamstresses is not standard protocol. That said, anytime a talented seamstress goes above and beyond, offering a gratuity is a thoughtful gesture. A gratuity might be appropriate if the seamstress accepted a large project for you at the last minute — for example, hemming new suit pants the night before your work trip or taking in your party dress the day before your birthday. A gratuity may also be appropriate as recognition for the long hours of skilled stitching that your seamstress has put in altering your wedding dress, which often requires multiple fittings and precise fixes to make your dress perfect. If you do decide to offer a gratuity, first ask if the seamstress accepts gratuities; if they do, offer them an additional 15 percent to 20 percent of the total bill.
