Jason B. says, "We had an overall good experience with Newhaus replacing our roof. We identified some major issues with our 1970s wood shake roof shortly before winter rains hit, and Newhaus was able to fit in the large project on fairly short notice -- in between rain storms. I was impressed with how quickly the crew was able to take care of the large items (demolition, installation) and Newhaus was very accommodating regarding late-stage change requests from us (doing insulation work partway through installation). In just a matter of days, we had a brand new roof, and it looks amazing. Neighbors have approached us, saying how good it looks! They installed the Presidential Tile shingle and it looks great. During the installation itself, our project manager Vic was super responsive and helpful throughout that phase. Super friendly too! We had some ductwork issues stemming from the vibrations of the demolition, that Newhaus took care of. This was no problem. There were also delays resulting from an inspection -- we didn't have visibility into this, and this did not directly affect us in any way, but after eight weeks Newhaus was able to solve this with the inspector. This was also not a problem. We did have issue with a few things -- things that I hope can guide Newhaus to improve in the future. These do not detract from the fact that we are happy with the end result and the value. It took six weeks to get the crew to remove debris from inside of our attic (below the roof), with a period of time where we could not reach our project manager. This was a problem because we use this attic space for storage, and it seemed this follow-up task as not a priority for Newhaus at the time. This was resolved quickly after we escalated through other channels, after which it took just an hour of work to finish. While this was not the main task of installing the roof, it was nonetheless important for us, given that we use this attic space regularly. When escalating the issue with upper management, and after they committed to finishing the project ASAP, they jokingly offered me a bottle of whiskey to avoid writing a bad review. While I appreciate the hustle and recognize this was a joke, this kind of thing will not land with some other people. This same individual also happened to attend the the initial contract signing visit (alongside the project manager Vic) and spent quite a bit of effort trying to convince us after we had already verbally committed to doing the project. His persistence was close to becoming a detriment. To Newhaus: next time, recognize when a client is already on board, and take the win when you have it. Another issue was unsolicited contact from potential clients. I received a call from a client (a stranger to us) asking about how the job went, and I had not given permission to share my contact information to potential clients. Not a huge deal, but this happened right when we couldn't get in touch with Newhaus regarding the attic debris, and it was not a good look. To Newhaus: be very clear about how client contact info is shared and please do not share this information without consent. I shared my honest feedback with this stranger (the good and the bad) and I have no idea what that did for their project, but also: do you really want people cold-calling clients regarding projects that aren't finished yet? At the end of the day, Newhaus did a great job installing our roof, on very short notice and within a narrow window of time, and with accommodations during the installation itself. We are very satisfied with the end result and the worksmanship was fantastic. I feel like I need to mention the other issues in the hopes that Newhaus can learn from them, not that they change how I feel about the end result. We are definitely satisfied. Newhaus solved our problem -- replacing a roof with something that will hopefully last many many years. And Newhaus delivered on that. Thank you!!"See more

Cris C. says, "Maykon stood out from his initial visit, and distinguished himself from 3 other potential hires with his calm and professional presentation, multiple solutions to remedy my leaking roof and ultimately straight forward pricing based on type of roof and depth of the work, rather than what it looked like I could pay. He came in with the best price with his first offer and therefore did not undercut or bad mouth his potential competition. Titanium navigated a previous permit snafu on my behalf and started and finished when they said they would. The crew arrived on time with a vigor that astonished me. They were friendly, professional, thorough and most importantly fast. They left the yard clean and the roof is a now a thing of beauty. They are a new company that is dusting the competition with a new way of interfacing and getting the job done. I highly recommend Titanium for your total roof replacement."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

When should I get my roof inspected?

Experts typically recommend that you have your roof professionally inspected at least once a year. But you also may want a licensed professional to inspect your roof during these circumstances:

  • You're buying or selling a home
  • You're filing an insurance claim
  • Before or after a contractor does major work on your roof

Search the Thumbtack site for experienced roof inspectors near you. You can contact them directly to set up a time to conduct the inspection, and learn more about their pricing structure and services.

What happens during a roofing inspection?

Roof inspectors are trained to look for signs of a failing roofing system that could lead to damage — especially water and structural damage. Your home's roofing materials may look great from the ground, but it's difficult to see potential damage unless you take a closer look. A roof inspector can do just that.

During an inspection, the professional will typically look for issues that may have occurred during installation and manufacturing. They’ll also keep an eye out for damage caused by normal wear and tear, as well as extreme weather events. They might also access your attic to see if there are signs of a leak in your roof.

Here’s a short list of common things a contractor will look out for during a roof inspection:

  • Damage caused by hail, wind, snow and rain
  • Missing, broken, buckling, curling or cracked shingles
  • Roof decay, rot, moss, mildew and mold
  • Rust around the flashing
  • Damaged chimneys and vents
  • Holes, gaps and punctures that could cause a roof leak
  • Water stains and ventilation issues

Hiring a roofing inspector prevents you from having to do the dangerous work of climbing onto your roof. Plus, inspectors know how to assess potential damage and determine the best way to repair your roof and prevent the need for more expensive repairs in the future.
