One of the young videographers from the studio filmed our event and did an excellent job. She was polite, professional and unobtrusive. She brought a sound system with her which we used to give short presentations to the guest of honor. I was very pleased with how adept she was. Now we await the editing of the footage, which is being done in the studio, to produce a DVD of the event. I have high hopes and every reason to believe it will be top notch. They are responsive, clear, accurate and business like in all their communications. I will post another review when we have the finished product. Jennifer from Pleasant Hill

Clearlight Video & Photography captured the best of my wedding. Lawrence is professional, kind, outgoing, curious, thoughtful, and takes the initiative to get the perfect shot. He calmly and tactfully directed our guests into the frame to get all the compositions we asked for (and more). Lawrence has a natural ability to capture real emotion and personality from strangers, such that many of our best photos are his candids. Moreover, all of our guests complimented us on his professionalism, friendliness, and ability to get people in the shot to compose good images. Lawrence was easy to work with throughout the process. We negotiated a price easily, even though my situation was fairly unique. Lawrence also allowed me access to his RAW files, something many photographers refuse to do. When I was unable to transfer the files to my computer after the event, Lawrence made additional arrangements to ensure I received them. Lawrence even continued to work on some of my images after the event had completed and he had been paid in full, sending me his alterations gratis. In sum, I speak for all of my guests in saying we were incredibly impressed with Lawrence's work. Measured by quality, I can see the services of Clearlight Video & Photography easily costing in excess of $2,000, especially in the Bay Area. I consider Lawrence's photography services to be the best bargain of my wedding, and give him my highest recommendation.

I recently got acting headshots from Brian. It was great working with him! He was very friendly, and I felt comfortable enough to try out some awesome expressions/poses/etc. We would do a series of shots, then look at them on his laptop so that I could see what was working and what wasn't and adjust accordingly. With previous photographers, they would just do a bunch of shoots, then show me the photos online the next day. Brian found a great hair and makeup professional who made me look and feel beautiful! And finally, I appreciated that Brian was really flexible about timing, editing, background setup, etc. Thanks Brian!

Thank you Cindy for fantastic wedding photos! My favorite part about working with Cindy is that she is professional. For me, this means several things: she was always timely with email responses throughout the process, she was prompt and ready on the day of, and her turn around time for the photos was super short! But the ultimate reason that Cindy is an amazing professional is that she is invisible! I have heard plenty of horror stories of photographers that drag the bride and groom away from the fun and make the occasion all about the pictures. Cindy was great at taking very little of our time to do couples shots. We were able to be completely present in the moment at all our events and Cindy captured them without us even knowing she was there. We have some excellent candids of friends and family as well as posed shots of the two of us. She stayed close at the beginning of the reception so that I could ask her for specific shots but she also wandered around and got a great picture of almost all 150 people at the event :) We are very happy with the pictures and the experience!

Sheila is not only a talented photographer but also very professional. She is very communicative and was a pleasure to work with. She was a joy to have around during the wedding day and was honestly a "fly on the wall" unlike other wedding photographers who are too "in it". The pictures she takes are beautiful and extremely well priced. I would not hesitate to work with her again. I actually look forward to it.

Stavan and his team were the photographers and videographer at our wedding a couple of weeks ago in Gilroy CA. They were reliable, energetic, personable, very creative and professional in every way. The showed us on time. Every guest was impressed how approachable they were. We can't wait to see the photos! My wife is counting down the dates to get the pictures and I feel sure they are going to amaze us! I will return with more reviews after we get the pictures and videos.

Doug and Melinda went above and beyond for my wedding. It rained on my wedding day but that didn't stop our photographers from taking beautiful rain shots, it actually added to the magic! We originally wanted photos at the Palace of Fine Arts but that wouldn't have worked out with the rain, so we came up with a plan B after the wedding ceremony and Doug was flexible with the sudden change. Later that day, my mother and my aunt could not figure out how to pin my bustle, Melinda stepped in like a pro and saved the day! Not only are they great photographers but they really helped us keep the flow of the wedding. We saw a preview of our wedding photo gallery and it was beautiful, we cannot wait to see all of the photos and create our album. We especially loved the candid shots during the wedding ceremony as well as the rain shots.

Jeff was smart, prepared, and professional. I selected him over other photographers because my impression was that he approached a job with the customer's needs at heart, and his work at our event certainly bore that out. He communicated well, was unobtrusive and helpful, and oh by the way he took some wonderful pictures of people engaged and working together at our event. You will enjoy working with Jeff, I promise.

Allan is of the best photographers I have ever worked with. His punctuality, friendly demeanor, faithfulness, and passion for capturing memories that will last a lifetime are his best qualities in business. He has all the right equipment, talent, and skill, and comes at a great price! I used him for my graduation photos and now use one of his photos for my linked in profile picture. He's an awesome guy and I'm really glad I hired him!

Nic came ahead of time on the day of the event. He coordinated well with the photographer. We hired him for the raw footage of the event and highlights video. He was very responsive over email, and provided raw footage of the event within a week. Highlight video contained well selected scenes.

I've been modeling for about a year now, and the only reason I was even able to get my foot in the door a fraction of the way was because of Nico. He was the first person I ever shot with. Since that time we have worked together numerous other times. My favorite thing about Nico, besides his obviously gorgeous photographs, is how comfortable he makes me feel when we shoot. I love pushing the boundaries of my art and being able to work with Nico is the only way I'm able to do that. Nico loves what he does and it shows 100% of the way through his work. He cares about making me, and every other model he's worked with I have no doubt, feel respected. This is a huge problem in the industry, but photographers like Nico are hopefully the forefront of a big change that needs to happen. I use so many photo's that Nico has taken of me in my portfolio, and my agent loves them .

Meeta is a brilliant photographer and can really bring your photos to life. I hired Meeta for an event, after seeing her work on her website. From being a photo-journalist for one of the finest newspapers and having studied photography, she sees and captures the moments in a different perspective that we cannot see. She was punctual, responsive and gave me the edited pictures within a week after my event. My previous experience in dealing with other professional photographers has not been so good, where I had to wait more than a month before I could get my hands on the photos. I highly recommend Meeta and will hire her again for any of my photography needs in the future.

It was an absolutely wonderful experience working with Kavya. She was very professional and gave great advice during the photo shoot. Only a few days after the event, not only she sent me more pictures than we agreed, but also she added her professional touch to all of them without any extra charge! This was the first time I used Thumbtack and as I am not very tech savvy, I had a hard time to respond to her messages. Kavya patiently walked me through every step including how to submit payment. All the pictures turned out great too.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want. Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June. Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
