Kevin replaced the garbage disposal in my rental unit in less than an hour. He also let me know that the tenants had put lots of plant matter down there.

Juan and his crew showed up on time and worked through some heavy rains to complete the job. With the exception of some small broken branches on one plant everything is back to the way it was. The trees look really great now. Thanks!

I hired Arisel to haul some dirt I had piled in the back of my house from a project my wife and I had been working on in the lawn. He was able to come to my house right away and quote. Price was reasonable and he was back the next day with help to get the dirt hauled away. We had him quote the pending projects we have been working on in the yard. (Installing base rock/sand, install big slate patio pavers, install gravel/pebbles, sod, landscape borders, and more...) We ended up using him to complete everything! It turned out really really nice. We were a little nervous in the beginning since we don't have much experience hiring help for our projects but Arisel kept in great contact and communicated wonderfully. He brought the right people to help with the jobs too. We will probably have him do any new project in the future.

After 4 years of drought our landscaping looked pretty bad. We had Valentin come and give us some ideas about converting to a drip watering system and landscaping with more drought resistant plants. Valentin and his landscaping staff came up with some excellent ideas. We approved, they went to work and the finished product is better than ever dreamed. Valentin worked with us every step of the way and was always available to answer questions and give us good ideas.

Chopping down tall trees cleaning behind my shed removal of waste. This was a very big job David came over and gave me an estimate very reasonable price. We discussed a date and time for him to come over and remove the shrubs, he works hard and efficiently I really appreciate all his work. We also discussed him coming back on a monthly basis.

I had a backyard pond & statue removed. Matt and I met first to go over the job. He called to confirm he was coming at the time we had set up and arrived on time. He removed it in less time than anticipated (it was hard work as it was concrete). He went about it in a logical and methodical way and was careful not to make a giant mess in the yard, and remained mindful of the plants nearby. He made it seem so easy, I wish I had done this years ago. I learned Matt is a carpenter as well and I would definitely hire him again.

I requested to have my yard, front and back, cleaned of dead plants, weeds and some replanting of new plants. Carlos provided me a time that he could come to assess the job and provide the estimate of cost. This was a very fair price for quite a bit of labor. Was certainly an all day job requiring several people. In addition, Carlos picked up the tree, that we pre-purchased which needed to be delivered and planted. I am extremely pleased with the service provided. Service was provided as agreed upon. The team was professional and respectful. I can highly recommend their work. They arrived at the time that was agreed upon and left when completely finished. The work site was left very neat upon completion. I am very pleased with the results.

My newly installed water heater stopped pumping hot water on a late Saturday afternoon. I panicked as we have young children in the house and needed the problem fixed immediately. No plumber was available to come in the same day on short notice. I contacted Byron and within less than an hour he was at my house and was able to fix the problem. He was very professional and explained what the issues were. Byron saved us from disastrous weekend without hot water!

The folks from Green Touch did a great job with their initial go-round on the yard, which included more garden waste than my bins could handle on their own. The garden looks beautiful again! I'm looking forward to seeing how they continue!

I was extremely happy about Mowers N' Blowers work for my yard renovation. After purchasing a new home, there is nothing more frustrating than seeing weed continuously growing and garbage piling up in my yard during interior renovation process. Nick and his team provided me with a quote of the best value and provided many suggestions and insights. They listened to my requirements carefully and the final results are stunning. They worked over the weekends in a very efficient and timely manner. Their work is super clean and high quality. They demolished the old concrete, spread and compacted decomposed granite, and installed pavers and rocks/pebbles. They also helped us plant new trees and were knowledgeable on their care and maintenance. Mowers N' Blowers is truly a one-stop shop for any yard work. Now that the yard furniture has moved in, it has truly become a dream come true for my wife and me.

Bill and his team helped me put in landscaping which met Santa Clara County's Landscape Rebate Program requirements. They did an excellent job! Nothing was too much trouble, even when I changed my mind at the last minute and decided to buy more plants (including a maple tree) and to add some flagstone. Would highly recommend Perfect Landscaping!

I needed ideas to improve my front side yard and Edward came out right away and gave me a very competitive bid to install irrigation to connect to my existing system and put in sod, as well as topping off the bark in all the planter beds in my entire yard. Even better, he was able to start the job very quickly and finished it on time. Edward was super responsive, answered all my questions in person and via text/phone, and even put in some flowering plants (not part of the original job) for just the cost of the bags of planting soil he picked up.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

How much does it cost to landscape your front yard?

Prices for landscaping your front yard can range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the scale of your front yard project. Your landscaping price will reflect how much change you implement, how much labor is required, and the cost of materials.

Landscaping is typically made up of softscaping and hardscaping. Softscaping refers to selecting trees, bushes, flowers and plants to achieve a desired aesthetic and to meet goals such as having a drought-tolerant yard. Hardscaping refers to moving earth, installing structures, and putting in decorative stonework, sidewalks or lighting. For softscaping, you may want to hire a landscape designer to consult on your plants and layout, and then do the digging and planting yourself or hire a gardner to handle the heavy lifting. A landscape designer’s hourly rate may range from $50 to $150 or more. If you want a turnkey approach, meaning someone who works with you to create the vision and then executes all the work, landscaping pricing will typically come down to a cost per square foot rather than an hourly rate. It’s a solid investment: Great landscaping can add up to 28 percent value to your home.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
