Mandy did a great job taking care of our two pet rats! We left extensive instructions and she did a great job following them and gave us updates and pictures of how they were both doing, which we were very grateful for. She gave them their medicine on a regular schedule and played with them. We are so glad she was there for our precious critters while we are away. They are usually a little traumatized when we go away but this time was different. We highly recommend her to take care of your loved ones and would give a referral if needed. Our rats are a handful but she did a great job!

Nanny 4 Pets has great pet sitters from overnight care to visits and walks. And before they leave they send me a photo and an update. I was very happy and my little Molly loves Renee who spent the night with her. She even brought me to and from the airport with her new business, Women Driving Women. These are great ladies and they all also work as personal drivers for women, children, and seniors. Thanks so much for the worry free trip. Meri

Bo went in pulling on the leash and crazy excited when he saw another dog. One hour later he walked out calmly and was completely unphased by other dogs he saw. I've got to keep it up, but Paul got me and Bo back on track!

Hired Alex to pet sit our cats while we went out of town last weekend. Was nervous to leave our fur babies with just anyone; however, upon meeting Alex at our consultation, I knew she was someone I could trust. Alex is very professional, accommodating and reliable! She also kept us up to date on how our cats were doing and sent pictures of them while they were under her care! Would highly recommend Alex and look forward to having her take care our fur babies in the future!!!

    About

Hi, my name is Lindsay Honea. I graduated from Point Loma Nazarene University this last December 2013 with honors and a bachelor's in liberal studies (teaching arts) and decided to get into the business field! I am currently enrolled in Point Loma's graduate MBA (Masters in Business Administration) program. I am also a member and leader of the track team at PLNU and will move into a coaching position next year. I love house and pet sitting and a chance to get out of my little apartment. It reminds me more of being home when I am in a place that has been loved and cared for by a family. I also love animals, and they only add to this feeling of being home as I am from a ranch/farm in Arizona and was surrounded by them growing up. It offers me a mini vacation as well as a break from my apartment. I live and work in San Diego, so I am available when needed. I have also been a trusted nanny/babysitter for many families over the years and am wanting to transition to more house/pet sitting. I think that it says a lot that families have trusted me with their little ones! I am also very active and greatly enjoy taking dogs for runs/walks if asked to and have a lot of experience with many different kinds of animals. In general, I perform the jobs that are needed in house/pet sitting. I have great problem-solving skills, and I am very responsible and organized and will leave your place as neat if not more than it was when you left it with me. I can definitely be trusted to take care or your home and pets!

    About

I love dogs and don't pet site just for the money. I truly give them lots of love & attention. I do spend at least 45 min. to an hour including taking them for a walk & giving them a treat. I also can spend the night at their home and let the dog sleep with me if that is what they are used to doing. I am also always on time and keep to the dog's (& cat's) feeding & walking schedule. Some pet sitters I know tell me when they are really busy they barely have time to run in to feed them, walk them, and then run to the next client.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is included in a dog grooming?

Dog grooming is so much more than giving your dog a bath. Dog grooming is a broad term that covers all aspects of canine cleanliness and hygiene. The services included in dog grooming will vary based on your needs and what you choose to pay. Unless they are rolling in cowpies or playing in mud puddles, most dogs are okay getting a shampoo bath only as needed. You’ll know when they need it if they smell bad or are bringing dirt into the house. Some dogs, like shepherds and shih tzus, have thick coats that can get matted and tangled without regular care. Pro dog groomers can deftly blow dry a dog’s hair after a bath so that it is shiny and smooth. Dog grooming can include brushing that detangles dog hair and also thins the undercoat to minimize shedding.

Dog grooming also includes hygiene services such as toothbrushing and ear cleaning. Clean teeth are important to the health of your dog, and the pros have the patience and proper technique to get it done. Regular dog grooming can stave off tear stains, those reddish stains below your dog’s eyes. Anal gland expression is something not many people want to do on their own, even if they love their dog. A dog groomer can safely and efficiently release any blocked anal gland fluid. Other dog grooming services include nail trimming and clipping. Nationally, dog grooming prices range from $60 to $80. Most dog groomers offer discounts to customers who purchase monthly packages or bundle multiple grooming services at one time.

Do cats have to get groomed?

It’s not crazy to have your cat groomed. Grooming will keep your cat’s fur soft and silky as well as give you early warning about any health concerns. Regular grooming can also help reduce the volume of hair your cat may be shedding and keep your longhair kitty cool if you live in a warm climate. Professionals competently groom your cat and are trained to manage them if they resist being groomed, while you may get scratched doing the same task. The national average price for cat grooming is $50-$70. Pet grooming prices may vary based on the task. For example, a bath and brush for shorthair cats may be $15, $20 for medium-hair cats, and $25 for a longhair. Cat groomers can also keep your cat’s ears cleaned, trim their nails, and provide haircuts if needed. Average prices for haircuts can vary from $30 to $95 or more, depending on whether the cat is shy or aggressive and whether their coat is in good condition, matted, or otherwise difficult to groom.

    What is a dog groomer?

A dog groomer is a service professional who provides dog grooming and basic hygiene care for your dog. Dog groomers are typically animal lovers who are competent and comfortable working with a wide range of dog breeds and temperaments. Dog groomers are knowledgeable about the care needs for different kinds of dog coats. A poodle will have different haircut needs than a shih tzu, for example, so it pays to have a trained pro provide the proper cut. Good dog groomers know how to safely clean your dog’s teeth, bathe your dog, and cut their nails without going too short. They understand how to trim the hair from around your dog’s face, express anal glands, and clean your dog’s ears. Many people who choose dog grooming as a profession also pursue other dog services such as attending veterinary school, running a doggy day care center, working as a professional dog walker, and more.

    What is a dog groomer?

Keep your family dogs happy, healthy and clean with regular dog grooming. A dog groomer is a business owner or employee of a dog grooming business who specializes in dog hygiene and grooming. To find a reputable dog groomer, research reviews, ask for references and confirm that the groomer has good standing in the dog grooming community.

A dog groomer should be comfortable and competent working with dogs of all breeds and temperaments. Typically a groomer will have trained with other groomers and taken educational courses to keep abreast of the latest safety information and techniques. There are brick-and-mortar dog grooming businesses, as well as mobile dog groomers who bring all their equipment and provide their services at your home or location. In some cases, brick-and-mortar businesses will also pick up and return your dog for an additional fee.

How much should cat grooming cost?

Keeping your cat groomed is an important part of maintaining their good health. The national average cost for cat grooming ranges between $50 and $70, with prices varying based on where you live and the services you request. Your cat’s temperament can also affect grooming prices. Scratching and hissing during a groomer visit can raise rates an average of $5-$10, or more, as hazard pay. Larger cats and long-haired cats that take longer to groom will also usually cost more. Here are some examples of cat grooming average costs:

    • Shave down or lion cut: $35-$60. These cuts preserve the hair around the face and tip of the tail but shave down the entire body. The lion cut is often recommended for extremely matted hair is exceedingly matted, for extreme heat, or for cats who are suffering from hairballs.
    • Ear cleaning and nail trim: $30.
    • Nail trim: $10-$15.
    • Bath and nail trim: $45.
    • Bath and sanitary trim: $55. A sanitary trim clips the hair on a cat’s behind to prevent fecal matting in longhair cats or cats that have mobility issues.
    • Bath, blow-dry, brush out, nail trim and ear cleaning: $40.
    • Full haircut, bath, and nail trim: $45-$95, depending on matting.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
