Mario was prompt to respond and was able to promise pick up and delivery times and a hassle free move for a flat rate. Moving from LA to the Bay area, it was comforting to know there would be no surprises. His crew is reliable, friendly and trustworthy. The boys did a very good job of safely packing material and ensuring there was not much damage (few dings are unavoidable). I dinged them a star because our delivery was delayed by almost 7 hours for absolutely no fault of the crew but the truck breaking down. For a long move I expect the truck to be ready on all fronts.

Exceptional job by Wesley and Robert. They were prompt and helped us with the move with ease. Their rates are very nominal too. Highly recommend Wesley and his team.

Tony was the first response on Thumbtack, and his message was right ton point, but I wanted to shop around. I actually chose a different mover recommended by friends, but 2 days before the move, they quit. Called Tony, and he came out same day for a free in-home eval. On move day, Tony showed up with his three movers and truck... charged me a flat rate for the first three hours, including truck. The guys were professional, skilled, and respectful of both me, my family, and my belongings. They brought all the supplies they needed, including dollies with nice shock-absorbing wheels, shrink wrap of all furniture, blankets, etc. They were great. Nothing damaged or broken. My only critique was the stains on the stairs carpet... they carefully covered the railings, but needed to cover the stairs as well. Also, with 3 bedroom and full garage, I really could have used 4 movers to make it go quicker than 8 hours. All in all, I'd definitely use Tony again.

I couldn't be happier! Frank is extremely professional, he knows what he's doing and his rates are fantastic. Plus he's a extremely friendly guy--an attribute that can take a lot of stress away when moving into a new space and trying to assemble furniture etc. He was communicative throughout the day, showed up early and built a fairly complex IKEA bed in less than two hours. All at a great rate!! I could not recommend Frank enough. Thanks again sir!!

This was the first time I’ve ever hired a moving company and the number of companies out there trying to charge on a minimum of three hours at a rate of $95 and up is insane!! It was a small move I knew it would take all of 1.5-2 hours max and after several searches on Yelp, TaskRabbit, I finally came to Thumbtack and found News Movers! Best deal for exactly what I needed and everything went smoothly and easily with their help. I would definitely hire them again just for making my life easier at a reasonable rate! Hire them for your next move whether big or small! They do job the right and are fairly priced!

Nery and his team had a huge project with us! Moving from a home we were at for 20 years - we had so much junk - debris, a true mess in the garage! Arrived 9 AM sharp! And by 11:30 AM - 20 years of junk - boxes - debris - file cabinets ...U name it GONE! And, the best part! They cleaned the garage and it sparkles now! WOW! Will recommend and will tell my Real Estate office - Keller Williams about them! Highly recommend :) Jeri

I would highly recommend Larry's Quality Moving! Larry was extremely responsive and professional in his work. I appreciate that he took proper care and handled my belongings with respect rather than carelessly throw them around as most movers do. Larry was also very honest in his pricing- upon completion, the total for my move ended up being less than what he had originally quoted me, so he gave me the lower/correct rate instead of trying to bend the rules and overcharge me! Thanks again, Larry!

Overall, they did a good job of moving. I have to say that the initial estimation was not good and they had to get a third guy to complete the job. Of course, the hourly rate went up, which was not a problem as I knew the size of the job. Movers worked really hard to get the job done and items came safe to my new home.

I recommend OC Long Distance Moving. They showed up on time and worked efficiently. Their communication with me was good, and there were no misunderstandings. They even dealt with my fussy Beverly Hills HOA. They went the extra mile and did a first-rate job.

I hired Mike & Shaw based on their responsiveness to initial inquiry (and follow-up) and value (though slightly higher than others in consideration). What sealed the deal was their knowledge of moving a piano that did not require them to ask me about the weight, how many men would be needed and charging an additional hourly rate just to move the piano. Marie was amazing as the scheduling of the move was last minute and encountered obstacles on both our ends on two different days. Yet, they were committed to making it happen and the third day scheduled was the charm. While I moved from a 3 bedroom townhouse to a 5 bedroom home, I pared down what was moved to 1 bedroom of furniture, kitchen table/chairs, desk, piano, tv stand and end table along with boxes; the latter I requested all be put into the garage. My hope was this would be done within 4 hours as I was on a tight budget but it took an additional 2 hours beyond my expectation. Nontheless, the job was done to completion. Mike spent additional 15-20 minutes off clock trying to secure the footboard of my bed that was loose due age, wear and tear, and no doubt previous 4 moves of assemble and reassemble during the 12 years of ownership. Thanks!

Moving is almost always stressful, but I chose Top Notch after speaking with Paul. From the moment the guys showed up everything was taken care of professionally. These guys are experienced, hard working, and polite. They are not the cheapest but they are 100% legit. I had no problems with the move, nothing was damaged or broken. But I feel like if I had a problem these guys would have dealt with it correctly. It is a real company that treats its employees like actual human beings. You can find cheaper but you won't find better.

We had the best couple cleaning our house until they moved away out of the country and we've gone through several people looking for a new team to be able to use ongoing but hadn't had any luck till now. We were very pleased first when we saw that they were another couple duo...we prefer to work with a nice family one-on-one rather than going through agencies. They tend to put more luv & care into the work we feel. We luv that they offered us a flat rate vs. the hourly which in our case would have been a real killer for us since it took about 12 hours to clean our house and do carpets/couch cleaning etc.. We do have a big house though, and we hired them for a deep cleaning, plus we have 3 fridges all that needed to be cleaned in/out, lots of clean clothes to be folded and hung, and carpets/couch cleaning as mentioned. I also helped in the cleaning process as I'm pretty meticulous on how I like things to be done, especially since it was there first time being here. I'm sure in the future it won't take quite as long, the first time always takes the longest so we expected this. Our last couple cleaning team took 8 hours to clean but that's without the carpet/furniture cleaning. To save time one could even just book the carpet cleaning on another day as they gave us the option to do but we just wanted to knock it all out right away. They did a great job and worked into the wee hours. We started at about 430pm and went to 4am, they never complained and worked hard. We were all tired but the next day when we woke up nothing feels better than to walk around your beautiful clean house! :) They even brought back an old carpet we were going to rip out so now we are considering keeping the carpet since it looks so good now. We missed cleaning my office and the laundry room because it had gotten so late but nonetheless we are very happy new customers and we will be booking them again in the very near future. The real bonus for us is due to our schedules sometimes evenings are way better...and it's such a challenge finding people to work that late. We've also had people in the past leave our home after few hours rushing to another booking without even finishing to clean our home which is very unprofessional or they come and do a shitty job for few hours and rush out saying they're tired, or worse you will find people trying to hustle a higher rate with you once they get to your home or after working for few hours...believe me there are some nightmare situations out there but I can assure you that you will not have these issues at all booking with this FAB couple cleaning team. So if you're looking for a sweet hard working couple, willing to work late, work hard, no complaining, they don't just clean they do carpets/wood floor cleaning etc. a one-stop-shop, and if they miss something they are happy to fix it till you're happy then you must give Dametris & Rebecca a try, we luv them, and so will you! ;)

Incredible movers from start to finish. Initial conversation was straight forward, via email and then phone. Simple rates, no hidden fees or strange add-ons. Just one all inclusive hourly rate. On top of that, they were extremely competitive in their pricing and extremely fast in their response times. They were also able to accommodate a relatively short booking time - we needed them within 2 days. The movers came on time, were efficient, patient, and professional in every way. Each mover went above and beyond in how they worked and how careful they were with our items. We have a large home, and a lot of items, and the guys worked their butts off for 12+ hours. I will always recommend this company "New Life".

Notice: my reviews are as unbiased as possible. It doesn't benefit other potential customers, nor the company providing the service, if I write a glowing, candy-coated review that glosses over any negative points. For the most part, Ben Hur Moving & Storage did a great job with my move. I'll be honest: this was a difficult move! From a 3 bedroom two-story house (stairs), to a town home (more stairs) -PLUS- a storage unit. Led by Hugo (who is an excellent foreman), the 4 men who moved my things really worked their asses off. They didn't waste any time, and honestly didn't even take a lunch break, even though it was a 8 hour move in total! With their moving equipment and expertise, they got it all done smoothly. Not to say there weren't some small issues: there was some minor damage on a few things. A couple of bookcases didn't escape unscathed, but they repaired some of the damage on-site. Because they had a tendency to over-stack heavy boxes and plastic storage containers on their hand trucks, some of the lids on the storage containers were cracked. All in all, not deal breakers… moving is tough… but it's worth mentioning. They really worked hard, though, to get everything moved quickly. (Although one of them had a tendency to hang back a little… and I had to help out with just a couple of difficult-to-move items because of this. You're mileage may vary.) All of my furniture was wrapped and protected pretty well, with some of them going the extra mile to make sure it was protected. Some items needed to be disassembled, then reassembled at the new place, which they dealt with well. In summary, I would definitely hire them again, with the caveat to be more vigilant about things getting "man handled" a little too much. I think 4 stars is fair.

Amazing work by Ben for a very reasonable rate! I chose Ben because he was the most responsive, professional, and prepared - and it all turned out to be true! It's always nerve wracking to hire movers - you worry about time, the condition your stuff arrives in, the condition your door frame will be left in, etc. - but everything about my move with Global Tree Logisitics Corp was impressively worry free. The quote was no pressure. He was available short notice. He was timely. My stuff was delivered in perfect condition. I plan to use him for all my future moves! Thanks so much!

We move on average once per year over the last 10 years, and have used a bunch of different companies. This is the first time we've ever used the same movers twice - and from now on this is the only moving company we'll ever use! We have used Royal Moving twice and both times they have been absolutely incredible. Everyone has such an upbeat attitude and are so pleasant throughout the entire process. Their plastic bins are also a life saver! Their crew works nonstop and make the whole experience of moving such a happy one!

We’ve moved a lot and have never used movers ... mainly because we have six sons and I have Scottish (frugal) husband. But with this move I decided to look into movers. I use thumbtack for the first time and was connected with DOWNTOWN MOVERS. They responded immediately, offered a competitive rate, and worked with me on scheduling. JOE and ADAM arrived and were absolutely amazing! I can’t say enough positive things about these two. I will never move without them again! I highly recommend this company for anyone doing any kind of move.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
