In 2009 my twin sister was diagnosed with cancer. I believed and prayed that God would heal her and restore her to full health. In 2010 I lost her. I was angry with God and family members. For months I carried this anger. Then my health began deteriorating.. I also learned that my anger was contributing to my illness. In 2014 I met Pr. Ira Lake who helped me recognize and accept my anger as being a natural part of the grieving process. He guided me through the process of accepting life’s causalities – deaths, loss of spouse, etc- as a part of life. Since then I am able to speak of my losses without blaming anyone. Nina

Dr. John McGrail is truly wonderful and amazing!!! I attempted to stop smoking on my own, but was unsuccessful because of the level of anxiety I would experience each time. I started researching online in order to find different methods of breaking this addition. I came across several online articles where Dr. McGrail had commented in regards to how hypnotherapy can assist in quitting smoking by changing the way the mind perceives it. I decided to call and discuss this matter with him as I was a bit skeptical. I was very pleased and impressed from the moment I spoke to Dr. McGrail as he truly took the time to answer all of my questions and concerns. Because of his professionalism and level of compassion, I made an appointment with him and became a nonsmoker within a week after one session. Given that I had never been to a hypnotherapist, I can say that the entire process was very relaxing and enjoyable. I also greatly appreciated the fact that Dr. McGrail followed up with me from time to time in order to check on my progress. If I knew quitting could be this easy, I would have stopped years ago. It has now been a little over a month and I do not know why I ever smoked and am actually handling stress a lot better than I ever did as a smoker. Thank you very much Dr. McGrail for helping me through this journey.

My teenage daughter had been having trouble with anxiety and OCD tendencies. After having met with Cristi, both issues have diminished greatly. My daughter actually enjoys going to Cristi to help her with strategies to deal with her issues and sees Cristi not only as her therapist, but as a trusted friend. Cristi also values my input as to concerns about my daughter's well-being and helps me to better understand the struggles my daughter faces. I highly recommend Cristi for anyone who is seeking a caring, compassionate, knowledgeable, and experienced therapist for themselves or a loved one.

I am a client of Pedro Baez and I love working with him. He has changed my attitude and pretty much every aspect of my life. My anxiety has gone way down and I am a lot happier and more successful as a result of his coaching and advice. He is one of my favorite people in the world—a natural healer who makes everyone who talks to him feel better. I can't believe how lucky I am to have him as my coach. His dream interpretation is a fantastic tool to get to the bottom of what is bothering you - I can't recommend it or Pedro strongly enough!

Brad was there for him when I needed him the most. He was the one who reminded me "SELF LOVE" that gave me the courage to leave my husband who was cheating on me. Brad genuinely cares about me as a person, now just another client of his. He never assumes what is best for me.. he always ask me why I do the things I do... He makes me ponder on a lot of my thoughts and decisions... He never judges.. he is not just a coach.. he is a friend.. he cares and loves people and that is what makes him so successful in what he does... With Brad's help, I was able to put my past behind me and move on with my life.. He shows me that TRUE LOVE is out there.. Just ask the universe for it and it will bring it to you... Brad brought a lot of his life experiences to the table... he is compassionate and empathetic because he speaks and coaches from his personal experiences.. He is real... not some counselors with head knowledge... I highly recommend Brad if you are lost and need to find who you truly are...

I am very happy with the services that I received from Dr. Murray S. Kaufman. The first time that I visited him I literally was a mess. I was dealing with IBS, and the condition was killing me because I didn't know how to live with it. I went to see Dr. Kaufman with the intention to receive a hypnosis protocol for IBS. I started the protocol; however, the doctor realized that I was suffering from anxiety disorder that was making the IBS flare up, and I started a therapy to work on that. Dr. Kaufman helped me to find the roots of my anxiety and how to deal with them. Every session was very productive, and I learned a lot about myself and dealing with my conditions. Now, I am in a much better place in life, and so thankful to Dr. Kaufman, because he helped me to overcome one of the darkest moments of my life. He is very knowledgeable, dedicated and professional. I recommend him from my heart to yours.

Working with Saman for almost 3 years and I have to say that he has blossomed into a great professional. To be honest I was really skeptical if therapy was right for me, seeing as I only met him a year or so into his internship so I wasn't sure if he was able to help me. He is a very patient, compassionate and understanding person who takes this field of work to heart...It's pretty much his calling in life. Fast forward two and a half years later, I've learned ways to cope with my anxiety and have gained the confidence to accomplish my goals in my life.

Olivia is such a bundle of positive energy and light! Her optimistic outlook on life is truly engaging, genuine and rare to find in Los Angeles. Olivia helped guide me to a healthy path after a 10+ year struggle with a diagnosed gluten allergy. With her help in nutrition, I've never felt better and healthier. Olivia is extremely intelligent, intuitive, well traveled and a gifted listener. She has grown to be a very close friend and confidant, helping me lessen my anxiety in other areas of my life including my fear of flying and trust issues in relationships. Olivia is truly a remarkable human being and has the potential to touch and heal every person she meets. I highly recommend seeing her!

I met Shaun Ellsworth via the International Coach Federation (ICF) website. I was looking for a personal coach to help me accomplish important tasks that I was struggling with. I chose Shaun over all the ICF coaches I was matched with because his personal info/bio resonated with me. I was responsible to others for the completion of several projects. The largest project was the renovation, rent-up and sale of an apartment building so as to maximize return to the owners. Although I have experience in this area, I was not getting the job done; I needed to delegate, hire others and trust them to do their job. Shaun helped me look at my outdated beliefs that I was holding on to that were holding me back. Additionally, the process of setting periodic objectives and goals and then being accountable to Shaun was a powerful tool that helped me get results. Bottom line: I hired a contractor and property manager, renovations have been made and all fixed-up units rented at top market rent.

I have struggled with anxiety my whole life. As I got older, I felt overwhelmed, lost, and not knowing my purpose. Nothing was going right for me in terms of career and relationships. I felt like my life was falling apart and I had no clue where to begin. I am so grateful to Dr. Ronaye Desiena and the team at LIVE treatment for helping me work through this difficult period in my life. When I feel like I’m spinning out of control, my team helped me slow down and shift my perspective in a way that I never would have been able to accomplish alone. Also, I love that everything was tailored to my specific needs/schedule. I highly recommend.

Went here because of anxiety with needles and dentists. It was a very pleasant experience. I couldn’t believe that this all can from something that happened to me at 12 yrs. I recently had 2 dentist appointments that involved needles and absolutely no anxiety. Cathy put me at ease as soon as I arrived. The appointment was very relaxing and very deep. I truly feel like a different person, this has actually alleged stress from other areas in. Y life. I highly recommend you give this new technique, RTT, and Miss Wilson a chance. Completely worth it.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

    • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
    • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
    • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
    • Overcoming addictions.
    • Managing chronic illness.
    • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

    • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
    • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
    • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
    • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
    • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
    • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
    • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
    • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
    • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
    • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
    • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
    • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
    • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
    • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
    • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
    • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
    • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
    • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
    • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

    How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.
