Lois is a wonderful tutor. As soon as she heard me talking she knew exactly what was it that I needed to train my English in order to take it to the next level. Highly recommendable to those who have an advanced level of English, because she is really precise and you get to learn a lot of history on the language. It is very enjoyable and it makes sense. If you need ESL, she's the one! She is also a writer, producer and acting coach, therefore she's also super creative and helpful when it comes to having to work out some text.

Cynthia is incredibly insightful, supportive and always professional. Throughout the time she coached me creatively she always stayed focused, reminding me every session what my goal is. She helped me take small steps every day to do the work spiritually, creatively and she also has an excellent grasp on the practical and the necessary small steps that make the big strides possible. When I'm not working with Cynthia I now have a structure and a routine to my day, and resources that she turned me onto to keep me going in the right direction. I referred another working writer to Cynthia and will continue to bring her clients because she has been an amazing resource and an invaluable inspiration to me.

My writing improved from being someone who had big ideas for tv and films to actually having a pragmatic plan writing those ideas into reality. From bi-weekly meetings we started with my premise line. Then as the months went by we worked on my beat sheet which was strengthened into a feature length screenplay I am working on right now. I was surprised at the independence and growth I gained from working with Amy. She would look at the beginning of the year with me via video conferencing and emails, listen to my goals (i.e. I want to build a screenwriting portfolio that consists of a tv spec, original pilot and a feature length screenplay) and she would break down the weeks with sizable writing exercises that would piece together my screenplay and tv script pieces. I feel great inspiration from watching movies and want to produce movies that move others as well..but sometimes you need a "coach" to help you get from Point A to Z. Starting a writing project can be daunting and it's difficult to "get your sneakers on, tie the laces and start running." I now feel empowered with the tools to produce my stories from conception to screen. I have already finished a tv spec, pilot, essays and working on a feature length screenplay. The main thing Amy has taught me as a writer is the balance between the artistic process as well as being successful in the industry. That honing the artistic process and building a strong body of work will attract the industry professionals that will want to work with me. She does a trustworthy job of moving both these processes simultaneously. Like most artists I juggle a lot. I have a day job, I am an actor who works on various shoots, takes classes and auditions for big opportunities all while working with Amy to realize my dream of becoming a show runner and director where screenwriting will be a vital tool. Amy has a gift for tailor making a program that fits the unique individual. Despite my very busy schedule, her efficient and tailor made syllabus has encouraged me to write regularly, little by little a day which has added up to a strong writing portfolio.

When working with a professional writer a business has to consider the writer's qualifications. Christopher from Ghost Strategies has a science background(Aeronautical Engineering), is an attorney and has written professionally for over 20 years. Because of this background he is very detailed oriented and is used to meeting deadlines. His science background means that he considers the substantive topic as well as good editing and writing practices in performing any project. He was an asset to my law firm and to my clients over a number of years.

I worked with Mr. Pestle during my senior year of high school in the school play. Despite never meeting him before, nor having any previous experience in a play or drama before, he showed a level of kindness and encouragement towards me that it is extremely rare in teachers of any form. His level of enthusiasm and obvious passion for what he does makes him a complete joy to be around, and also makes the experience for all involved much more inspiring. He works hard every session to get the most amount of work complete at the highest level of quality, while also maintaining a steady head and never losing his temper. One can always look forward to a class or session with him offering something new and intriguing to learn, and at the same time keep the atmosphere fun, yet with a high standard of professionalism. There is never a time working with him where anyone felt excluded, and he was always open to new ideas or even constructive criticism from subordinates. Given the opportunity, I would work with him again in a heartbeat. His kind and compassionate demeanor is contagious to be around, and his display of a high amount of knowledge and level of professionalism for his craft and trade gives comfort to all involved knowing they are in good hands. I would highly recommend working with Mr. Daniel Pestle to anyone. A great teacher, and a great friend!

I had been working on a non-fiction book to grow my business for quite some time and really struggling. A good friend referred me to Jenna and after talking with her for about 10 minutes, it was clear that I needed her help. She worked with me first to get an outline for my book and helped me set the tone that credentialized me. She coached me through the first couple of chapters and when I realized I that I am just not a writer at heart, I hired her to ghost write the rest. I am so glad that I did. Her skill with words is outstanding. My book is going through a final proofread right now and in the next few weeks I am going to be a published author!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
