TERMITE SERVICES, subterranean. Background: single family home, Redondo Beach (borders of Manhattan and Hermosa Beach). Very old home (built in 1957). I witnessed first hand evidence of swarming termites, settling into various areas of front yard. Killed as many as I could, but futile as there were many wings visible on the ground. Did an internet search, somehow found my way to Thumbtack.com. Made a request and William/Ankor was the first to respond. He provided a free estimate with a very thorough inspection: checked attic crawlspace, crawlspace under home, various rooms he could access with my supervision, the eaves of the home, and the perimeter of the home. I mentioned why I needed termite services and he confirmed (as I had already) that wings were visible, a clear evidence of sub termites. He however, did not find any obvious signs of termites inside of the home and gave me a few, but all reasonable options for treatment. I did not want the inconvenience of tenting as we had that done back in 2009. He stated it wouldn't be necessary based on what he could see (this was refreshingly unexpected as I'm used to service people constantly trying to up-sell or claim that tenting is the ONLY way.) I even called a company that is known for their radio commercials that claims orange oil is the best/safest, and had them complete a free inspection/estimate. Their inspector was dressed far too nicely to crawl in any crawlspace, and guess what, he didn't. He didn't do nearly the thorough inspection that William offered and he was VERY QUICK to say that I had termites without seeing nearly as much of my home. I even had to ask him how he knew I had termites based on how little he "inspected." That company also wanted almost $3000.00 for their services. Anyway, I asked William if he was willing to return to confirm or refute the other company's assessment, William did, and confirmed yet again that he didn't see any immediate need to treat the home, only the yard/exterior. I don't know too many service people that say you do NOT need services - otherwise how do they make a living? Well William is the type of service person that I think everyone hopes for/dreams of. He's on time (that's practically unheard of), he communicates with you directly about when he's on the way, he responds quickly, he's presentable but dressed appropriately for the nature of his work. He's thorough, personable, and seems very reasonable. I spent less than $700 for direct ground treatment around my home, including underneath (it's a raised foundation) and in the known areas of infestation in my yard. Quite reasonable as he was here for 4.5 hours). I have never felt rushed when William is answering my questions or that he rushes the job. He is knowledgeable, professional, and has integrity for someone in his line of work. I plan to use William again for his rodent control services, and additional termite control at another property.

Professional, courteous, prompt response and honest! I called for an inspection due to bits on my arms. I'd saved anything I thought might be a sign of a pest for George to look at. His advice and insights gave me much comfort and his integrity helped me feel I could trust him. He even guided me to consult a termite specialist and didn't speculate on one of the samples. George is confident in his ability to take care of your needs, but never pushy. It turned out I don't have bed bugs but I would recommend Gorilla Pest Control if you are concerned that you do!

From beginning to end, Stratton Termite & Roofing did an excellent job. Frank showed up on time to make his free inspection, thoroughly explained his findings, and took all the time I needed to answer my questions. He even inspected the roof at my unscheduled request. He immediately got us on the work schedule, showed up on time to perform the work, and kept the roof project on budget. For the termite work, he came in below the inspection quote based on field-conditions and the work that was ultimately done. I highly recommend Frank and his team.

We have been homeowners for 14 years and have never hired pest control. We recently moved to a new home that has a lot of pests and wildlife. We were happy to get lucky with Ravega pest control. Marco came out asap and explained different solutions to take control of our yard. He offered us different options for maintenance. He also noticed termites which our home was supposed to be exterminated from the "home sale" inspection. Luckily Marco took pics and I was able to send the termites pics to the other pest control to come clean up their work. Thanks to Marco we feel like have a plan to rid of our brown widows and other pests. Would happily recommend him!

I let it go for too long. Knew that have lots of termites until my real estate agent told me that I have to do something, He referred me Prime Termite but I also checked them online before hiring. They pocked every single wood you can imagine in my house sprayed their organic stuff all inside the walls, and did lots of repairs too. Depending on a day they sent 2-4 men,. It's always a good idea to get referrals, you know these online things, you can't trust them that much. Anyway, just my 2 cents for Carlos, Vic, Wallace, James, - hardworking and nice - Keep it up that way, you do a good job, nothing needs to be changed.

I am a homeowner in Thousand Oaks. I hired Allguard Termite & Pest Control for a termite inspection and ant control. The folks that answered the phone were courteous and the technician John who came to my property was very knowledgeable and obviously experienced at what he does. Like the Web site states, they were very affordable compared to others, and I'm highly satisfied with Allguard.

Yes, I think all homeowners don't like going through the process of getting their home inspected for termite, especially when you need to get your home tented. However, the Termite doctor made the whole process smooth and pleasant. They were very professional and did quality work. Great customer service and I appreciate them being on time and started working as soon as they arrived. Also, they completed the job as promised. I would highly recommend them. Thank you, Michelle-Tyla

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do pest control companies do?

Pest control companies handle all aspects of bug, rodent and animal extermination or removal. Pest control professionals visit your home or office to identify the type of pest that is troubling you and offer various treatment plans — complete with clearly outlined costs. Once you and the pest control company have a signed agreement, the pro will begin treatment. Pest treatment can range from the use of spray pesticides and gel bait to live and/or kill traps. There are a wide range of types of pesticides, many of them nontoxic for humans and other small animals. This means you may be able to have your home treated for pests without harming nearby wildlife or your dog and cat. The pest control pro will carry out the treatment plan and, depending on the service agreement, provide follow-up such as emptying traps, inspecting access points, or reapplying pesticide spray if the pests return. Costs will vary based on the type of pest you are having removed and the extent of the infestation. The average national pest control price range is $80-$130. From a minor bedbug event to an entire home termite infestation, pest control companies have got you covered.

How do you get rid of termites?

The best way to get rid of termites is to act fast. Termites are a problem that will only get worse — and no matter how much you want them to, they usually don’t magically move out on their own. There are three main types of termites: drywood, dampwood and subterranean. Drywood and dampwood termites sneak through cracks in your exterior paint, nail holes, and gaps near windows and other openings and begin to eat through your wood. Subterranean termites enter your house from the ground up by creating mud tunnels. In all cases, they survive by eating the wood of your house. The type of termites you have can steer the treatment plan.

Methods of termite extermination include fumigation, use of pesticides, and use of natural elements that are poisonous to the bugs. The extent of your termite infestation will help determine the treatment method. If you have drywood or dampwood termites that have infiltrated all aspects of the wood in your home, the pest control pro may recommend enclosing the whole house in a tent and gassing the termites via fumigation. If you have subterranean termites, often the entire footprint of the home must be treated by drilling liquid treatments into the slab or foundation of the home to exterminate the colonies. In any case, once you see signs of termites, it’s time to take action and call a pest pro.

How much does it cost to treat a house for termites?

Termites are not only creepy-crawly, they can literally eat your house out from underneath you. Termites feed on damp and dry wood and can chomp through your house at an alarming rate. The national average pest control cost for termite extermination is $240-$400. Treatment costs can be higher for an extensive infestation. Here are some examples of average pest control costs for termites:

  • Liquid treatment of subterranean termites: $3-$4 per linear foot.
    • For $75 per year, a company may offer a maintenance plan that provides inspection of the property and renewal of the warranty.
  • Liquid treatment of subterranean termites: approximately $400 for a 2,000-square-foot home at $3-$5 per linear foot.
    • The price is higher for additional work such as foaming and drilling inside of concrete slabs.
  • Fumigation treatment of drywood termites: $1,200-$1,500 for a 30,000- to 35,000-cubic-foot home
    • Fumigation is measured in cubic feet because it fills the airspace of the home and infiltrates the wood that the termites may be colonizing. The cost of fumigation is affected by the number of levels in the home as well as the square footage.

How much does it cost to get rid of cockroaches?

Cockroaches are not only ugly, they are difficult to get rid of. Quick and resilient, they can be hard to get rid of without professional help once they have inhabited a house. Nationally, the average range for cockroach pest control cost is $80-$130. Extermination professionals typically provide a free estimate to determine the extent of the infestation. They’ll check for the main sources of the bugs, identify bug access and entry points into your home, and determine the best method for elimination. There are a variety of cockroach extermination tools including gel baits and traps, pesticide foggers, desiccants (which dry out the cockroaches), neurotoxins, and other pesticides. Pest control costs can also cover preventive measures like regular spraying and trap maintenance. Some regions of the country are much more prone to cockroach problems than others, so pest control costs may need to be part of your quarterly budget. Cockroaches love dark, humid, and warm areas and water sources, so place traps near your washer and dryer and under your sinks.

What are the signs of termites in your home?

When you see signs of termites in your home, call a trusted pest control professional as soon as possible to handle the situation. Termites feed on wood, meaning they eat through the wood that makes up the frame, floors and other components of your house. Most people don’t know they have termites until they discover the damage done, because termites remain hidden underground or inside the wood they are eating. Keep on the lookout for these signs of termites:

  • Water bubbles in your interior or exterior paint: If you poke at what look like paint bubbles and find termite droppings inside, it’s a sign of termite infestation.
  • Frass: This is a fancy term for termite poop. Keep your eyes peeled for what look like six-sided salt and pepper droppings.
  • Mud tubes: Subterranean termites move between their earth home and your house by building mud tunnels. Mud tubes under or along the side of your house or foundation are a sure sign of a termite infestation.
  • Wings or swarming near your home: As a new colony is looking for a home, they fly (swarm), then shed their wings and burrow into nearby wood.
  • Softening of wood or hollowed-out wood: Termites don’t like paint, lacquer varnish or other wood finishes, so they’ll eat inside the wood and leave the exterior finish like a shell.
