Introduction: We’re new to Thumbtack, but certainly not new to our service area: we celebrate our 25th year in business! Residential remodeling is our specialty, and our residential work ranges from historic preservation of Victorian homes, to mid-century modern homes. When you hire an architect, you should be getting more than a talented designer. You need someone to help you manage the project, because the project will absorb a great deal of time, money, and anxiety. We won't sell professional services as an anxiety free "adventure" as the project unfolds, but we will work to minimize all that. We can help guide you through the permit process. There are different ways to engage a contractor, and we can discuss their pros and cons. One of the most important questions you will encounter is "How will I manage the money?", and we can discuss how to deal with that challenge in the face of uncertainty about construction costs. You will get a “hands-on” principal when you work with me. I am involved in every project. I keep my work load limited so that every project gets my personal attention.

Craig was our architect for an extensive, circa 1880 Victorian home remodel which included adding a proper foundation to the house, remodeling the existing first floor, adding a second story bedroom suite, raising our existing garage and erecting a 2 story structure that housed a garage as well as an office and workshop. It was not an easy task, and yet we managed to accomplish our goal of gaining needed living space while maintaining the integrity of a home from this era. We knew we were successful when the mailman said "if I hadn't seen this go up with my own eyes, you wouldn't be able to convince me that this hasn't always been here." Craig was thoughtful and attentive throughout this massive project and we would hire him again for any architectural needs.

Craig Bagley was the architect for our major home remodel. He helped us make the initial decisions on the realistic scope of the project and what features were our priorities. I was especially thankful for his expertise in shepherding us through what seemed like a very complex permitting process. He handled the subcontracting of the necessary engineering studies that were necessary smoothly. I believe that he worked well with our general contractor.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Fees will vary depending on the scope of work. Often a client needs help clarifying the scope of work. We are very flexible with fee arrangements, which can be hourly, a set fee, or some combination of the two. I always recommend we meet at the site of the proposed work for our initial visit. I charge $200 for an initial consultation fee, which is credited to the project fee if we sign an agreement and move ahead. Restoration of old Victorians is especially challenging. Sometimes the biggest challenges are finding materials to match the originals, and finding qualified craftsmen to install them. These challenges often require additional time and expense to solve. You are best served having both an architect and a general contractor experienced with restoring old Victorians.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
At our initial site meeting (details above), we will talk about the proposed project in more detail, and I can recommend an approach to getting it completed. As managing principal I will follow up with a fee proposal. If acceptable, I will submit for your approval a proposed agreement. Upon receipt of a retainer, we will revisit the site, take lots of photos, and measure up the existing structures where it’s important to do so. If you have drawings of the existing structures, congratulations! You just saved yourself some money, as we won’t have to create a set of “as-built” drawings from scratch. Design sketches will follow. After design is complete and approved, we will prepare permit and construction drawings and specifications. We can then help you secure the necessary permits prior to construction. We can help with contractor selection, and assisting you and the contractor while the project is under construction.
