Great friendly service from Dinh - the water heater replacement became tricky with the size difference of newer water heaters interfering with the current pipe routing and Dinh did a good job on the custom fit. He was also flexible working with my schedule in order to complete the project quickly and minimize the amount of downtime without hot water!

My water heater wasn't working. I had contacted Rocky regarding a repair my water heater needed. He was on his way to a job but gave me a window of time that he would be able to come over and asses the situation. He was early, which great. Took care of the job quickly, gave me a ton of advice that i have been trying to find more information on. Took care of the job and cleaned up. Awesome! someone who delivers as promised.

Edwin has completed a number of tasks for us and we have always been so pleased with his work. The tasks have varied from redesigning our entertainment center so that he could install a new 39 inch tv along with a new blue ray system. He has designed new shelving in a sewing closet,, and completed the transfer of information from an old computer to a laptop system. An older floor lamp needed a whole new socket, preventing a potential fire hazard. He completed it with clear attention and efficiency as he does each task in our household. An old set of binoculars was useless until he took it apart and reassembled and adjusted the lenses to bring it into focus We have a beautiful German made grandfather clock in which a lightbulb burned out We were unable to replace it and Edwin, upon looking at it, realized that the clock was a European wiring system. He was able to rewire the clock to make it adaptable to accommodate American bulbs. At one point our water heater would not accommodate the need for hot water. Edwin was able to bypass the energy efficient device which had malfunctioned and he made a very thorough diagram which the electrician could review on a follow-up visit. Edwin is fun to watch complete his tasks. He moves quickly, explaining what he is doing as he goes along, and he cleans the area when he has completed the task. What more could you ask?

Luigi is very knowledgable about water heaters. When I mentioned my symptom in my initial requests out to different companies, he immediately pointed out the potential cause, and also was very honest about why the heater need to be replaced instead of repaired, without trying to sale me to do it. A few other responses I got ether asked for a service fee to just come out and take a look, or did not know the potential causes based on the symptom. One of the companies even made a mistake of the year of my old heater based on the serial number I sent to them, how can I trust people like that? After some research, I decided to replace the water heater instead of repairing, since mine is already 20 years old. Luigi explained very well to me about model and warrantee information during our initial communication. I got a few quotes from different companies for the replacement. His price came in on the low end(not the lowest but very close). I chose him because he really knows the water heater stuff well. Luigi told me he has been in this business for 15 years and I can totally see that. On the day of installation, Luigi gave me a free upgrade to 50 Gal tank for the same price of 40 Gal, which made his price the lowest. Luigi's response time is also excellent. He responded very quickly, sometimes within mins, to every questions I sent to him. And once I decided to go with his company later Monday afternoon, he came out the second morning and finished the job within 2 hours before noon. The installation is neat and clean! Thank you Luigi for the professional work!

I had another handyman at our 4plex in Sunnyvale but wanted a little more quality from his work. So I tried out Jesus. He charges a little more, but is extremely skilled whether it is installing a custom door, getting a door lock to sit just right, making plumbing changes or recommending water heater changes. He definitely knows the small details in home construction and maintenance. Stephen

I was looking for the repair service company for water heater such a long time. Few days ago I found this site and Abram appeared immediately once it's registered. His resoponce is pretty quick to schedule the appointment. Actually his repair is quick too. He cleaned the inside of equipment and replace the nozzle and it took about 1.5H. Hopefully I don't need to call him again though, I'm satisfied at least for now. Thank you, Abram!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

How much do new water heaters cost?

The cost of a new water heater depends largely on the type and size of the heater. The average national cost for a new water heater installation including a 40- to 50-gallon tank is $350-$780. Most homes don’t need larger tanks, but they are available — for a price. The average difference between a 50-gallon tank and a 75-gallon tank (the next most common size) ranges from $400 to $600. Hundred-gallon tanks are also available, and they can cost double or triple the price of a 50-gallon tank from the same manufacturer. New water heaters tend to be far more energy-efficient, so they can cut energy costs; homeowners may also be eligible for a new water heater rebate from their local utility company.

Typically, tankless water heaters, which heat water only when you need it, cost more but can save about 25 percent of annual water heating costs, on average. They also lose only 5 percent of their energy compared with a tank unit’s 30 percent energy loss. Note, too, that a water heater with a tank has a life expectancy of 10 years, while tankless units generally last about twice as long.

The final expense to consider is a possible disposal fee to get rid of the old water heater; some companies include it in the price, while others charge an average of $35-$150.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
