I received 3 bids to do a difficult job-- remove my old gas furnace and install a heat pump and air circulator in the attic of my home. Rudy Herrera of HP Mechanical, who has 16 years experience as a licensed contractor did an excellent job. He and his helper were very professional, extremely knowledgeable (I asked a lot of questions), productive and friendly. Since his overhead is lower than other companies, he could offer the best value for his hard work. Rudy did a great job within a 2 1/2 day period. He was very responsive to my texts. The heat pump works beautifully cooling the house and heating the house. HP Mechanical's Rudy Herrera is my heating/cooling/ plumbing contractor now. He'll be back to put in the downstairs heat pump.

I had an all-in-one washer/dryer installed in my kitchen. This involved removing an existing cabinet, installing an electrical outlet, redoing the entire plumbing system in the kitchen and installing a new cabinet next to the washer. This is a much bigger job than it sounds. Troy did an excellent job. He also fixed some of the shoddy plumbing attached to the dishwasher and garbage disposal from a previous "contractors" work. I am hiring Troy again to refinish my cabinets and to build a dry bar. Good, honest and responsible. Guys like Troy are tough to find.

Max installed the plumbing for washer/dryer hookups in my condo; Hot & cold water hookups with drain pipes, and vents. Max is very courteous & punctual and does top notch work. It was not an easy project due to the location of our washer & dryer but he made it work and did a great job weaving the pipes in the least obstructive manner possible. He was also very busy at the time that I hired him but was able to squeeze me in during some downtime he had while waiting on parts for another project. I would definitely recommend Max & will 100% use him in the future for any of my plumbing needs.

I came to Carlos with what seemed like a straightforward problem. He solved it in the end, and in the process uncovered all sorts of problems that my previous HVAC contractor had left behind. He came out within 24 hours of my initial request to investigate and do a free estimate, and came back to do all of the repairs and improvements today: closing off two ducts that were just blowing into our crawlspace (!), rerouting existing ducts to shorten the distance air has to travel to our bedroom, replacing bent ducts with proper elbows, fixing the cover to the furnace (small work, but nice to reduce a leak), and tuning the dampers to make sure we have airflow to our bedroom. From the beginning, Carlos worked hard to figure out what was really going on with our ducts, and I'm super happy with the results. I can't recommend him more.

Then he cleaned dryer duct. Both were done efficiently at agreed price of $99.We were pleased with the results, and glad to highly recommend Guy

Hayward is very professional. He was punctual and gave me a heads up before he arrived. Hayward made sure to keep me in the loop with what he was doing. He explained the system to me and went above and beyond to make sure I was informed before making decisions. Hayward even went back under my house to take pictures for me. Furnace works again and I couldn’t be happier.

We remodeled a shower/bathroom with Grats Design. Gene was extremely helpful given that we were neophytes to remodeling projects. He offered a lot of useful insights as we were in the planning stages and helped us to understand what was possible and which of our ideas would be implementable. The estimate that he provided was in line with the final project cost. There were several issues that arose over the course of the project that Gene could have legitimately billed us extra for (the removal and replacement of rotted wood in the shower subfloor) yet he chose not to do so. Gene's team also had to do more work than anticipated due to some high-end European fixtures that we installed which required some finessing with the installation. The quality of the work itself was excellent. We're very happy with the modern upgrade and will look forward to working Gene again on our next project

I have been trying to install laminate flooring for a long time and after getting quotes from several big box stores, I pretty much gave up. I decided to try local business and I posted here on Thumbtack. John got in touch with me almost immediately and was very on point. He wanted to get the job done ASAP. I had to postpone a few times because of scheduling conflicts and he was very flexible and understanding. We finally decided on a schedule. He showed up with his buddy Brandon, and they got to work almost immediately. It was fun to talk to them during the process and he explained what he was doing and why and asked if I was OK with his approach. I felt respected. John was up all night and he finished 99% of the work by 5AM next morning. I am very happy with my new floor. I would recommend John for any flooring related work with confidence.

Our 35+ year old furnace bit the dust & decided to bid out for a furnace plus AC. After multiple bids, we decided to go with Freedom Heating & AC. We liked the way Jared explained the old HVAC system & comparing it to the benefits of a new system. We were able to schedule the job quickly & planned for a two day install. One day for DEMO & one day for install. So glad went went with Freedom, Jared, Jeff & Brad were really nice guys who take pride in their craft. We have a young child so they tried to keep noise to a minimum. We’re glad we went with AC unit too because it keeps the house nice and cool during this summer heat. Our new thermostat is nice and high tech & the filtration system really cleans out the air well. For a job well done, we received great price & high quality install & a really nice furnace & AC system. Freedom heating and AC are highly recommend by our family. Thank you!!

We have had E&J Handyman Services do several jobs for us over the years. We have been so pleased time and time again. Always fair prices and always fantastic work. Several years ago, Jason put in a front patio and step for us. It was meant to be a temporary solution, but he did such a great job we have kept it permanently! We have had him do several interior jobs as well, installing lights, re-caulking our tubs, installing trim work, painting new interior doors, troubleshooting general household maintenance issues (garbage disposal, broken faucet, faulty water heater). He has done quite a bit of interior painting for us too. Always a great job. He left the painted areas cleaner than he found them. He has also helped us with broken sprinklers and found a leaking pipe that could have cost us major money. Not only does he do a great job, but he is genuinely a nice, trustworthy and honest guy which is a refreshing change...when it comes to handymans. We highly recommend him.

Mike came by to give our furnace a routine check-up as it hasn't been serviced in four years. He gave it a thorough check-up for function, safety, and potential problems. Filter was replaced and he left me with a schedule for future maintenance.

Fairfield Heating & AC (Vinnie) was an excellent experience at a great price. They came in checked out that our motor on the furnace was blown, came back within the hour with a new motor and spent couple hours thoroughly replacing the motor and checking things were working great with our furnace. They even found an older elbow vent that needed replace and they came back the next morning to replace the elbow at no charge. Excellent service! Thank you!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

    • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
    • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
    • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
    • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
    • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
    • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
    • Cleaning and oiling the blower
    • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
    • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
    • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

    • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
      • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
    • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
    • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
    • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
