Jiri in the office quoted 2 men for $80 an hour, or 3 men for $105 an hour. I gave Jiri explicit information and asked for an estimate on what he thought the final cost would be. Jiri said because of afternoon traffic, it could cost between $250 and $300. It took 2 hours, the men worked fast, wasted no time and worked quickly and professionally. However, Jiri charged $300 for the job anyway. Not the 2 men at $80 or $160 total quote. I paid the men $240, because they were good and it was not their fault but it was Jiri in the office I had the problem with. Plus, at this point, I was then told there was a $240 minimum. First I heard of that, and it should have mentioned before and been put in writing. I have my notes, no, never mentioned that. The men told me to take it up with Jiri. I was ready to give them a big tip but by then I was frustrated and annoyed. Not my first rodeo, Jiri. I've moved before. You don't get away with that. Stick to the quote, don't give an estimate of the job that is inflated and then try to stick to that, and if there is a minimum, put that in writing on the quote. Or was it possibly just a misunderstanding? In that case, you owe me $80. First allow me to apologize for my late review as I haven't had my internet back up til now. And let me say that of all the things I could be doing having spent 4 weeks without the internet, the FIRST THING I DID was pull up my email so I can find a way to brag about how AWESOME DERRY AND ALIJIAH WERE as my movers! They were professional, fun, and they were patient and great with my kids whom just wanted to help (but possibly hendered the men at times!) But still they allowed them to join in the responsibilities here and there (like allowing them to help with their own toys! Lol), all while keeping them COMPLETELY SAFE at all times! They were such great guys! I wasn't even sure in the beginning if I was going to be able to tip them, and I was honest about that up front, and NOT ONCE was that a factor in their performance. In fact I believe Alijiah had said something like, "I'm here for you and your needs, and to make this job as easy on you, and as less stressful as possible. You don't even worry about a tip!" Of course that just wanted me to tip even more cuz he was so professional about it. And I was happy that end the end I could help the guys, cuz they did wonders for me. They made a difficult time easier to deal with. And since I suffer from debilitating rheumatoid arthritis, I was so relieved to get through that day in as little as pain as possible! I hope I never have to deal with moving again, but if I do I will ask for, and always recommend, Derry and Alijiah! Thanks, you guys! And Brandon Wilkinson, thank you too! Jamie in Yuba City

Wonderful moving experience! This was my first time moving and I was very nervous about the move, especially since I didn't manage to get a parking permit in time to secure a parking spot in front of my building. The movers were extremely professional: found valid parking, worked efficiently, took ample care to make sure not to scratch the furniture / walls while moving, and assembled my furniture with ease at my new apartment. I would recommend Larro's moving services to anyone who's looking to move in the SF area.

Steven and his team showed up on time and moved quickly to move my things from a one bedroom apartment from Cupertino to a high rise in San Francisco. Rate was reasonable for a fairly short move (~4 hours).

I highly recommend Ddt movers! They ensured our move went smoothly and didn't mind staying an hour longer because we had so much stuff and underestimated the time. It was really impressive to see how easy they made our move look! :-)

Dan and Chike (sp?) were very careful with my stuff. They were also very patient and helpful when taking specific direction (e.g. where to place the items within the new apartment). One suggestion for next time - make sure that the person who prepares their truck gives them enough supplies (e.g. a roll of plastic wrap and more than one complete wardrobe box). Overall, I was happy with the moving service and would recommend it to others.

This was my first time trying to hire a professional via Thumbtack platform and it was a very good experience. After submiting the request, I received 3 quotes from different movers, and Pavel was one of them. He stood out among the three because of his responsiveness and reasonable price. Before hiring him, I was a bit concerned given that he had only one review before. But Im glad that I decided to hire him. Pavel was very careful with my stuffs, especially my computer (they also provided a small blanket to cover my table top) He was flexible as well when I asked him if he could stop by Ikea and Living Spaces store for me to pick up some furniture. Overall, I give Pavel and his crew 5 stars for their professionalism. I'll definitely contact him again for future move

I hired MP Movers (Marquiz) to assemble a 6 drawer IKEA dresser. He arrived right on time and was very polite. The dresser came in 3 different boxes which had to be moved downstairs to my daughter's room, which he did for me. He was so conscientious that at one point the instructions didn't match the materials and he brought this to my attention. He quoted me a flat fee and stuck to that. All in all, I couldn't have been happier and I will definitely hire MP Movers again. I highly recommend Marquiz and MP Movers.

The team at Wally's was very responsive (jumped on my job with less than 6hrs notice) and tactical about moving my apartment. They took the time to wrap, and protect, all of my belongings before moving them and came well prepared with extra boxes/blankets. Amazing experience. Would use again and am referring friends! Note, they do have a minimum charge.

I hired Pat for a move from Fontana, CA to Berkeley, CA. He was incredibly kind and professional from the very beginning. His rate was significantly lower than anyone else. About a week before my move Pat was even able to lower my rate more because he found another customer moving to the same area so he could combine the moves making it cheaper for me. Not only did Pat exceed my expectations financially but he really went above and beyond his duties! I couldn't be present for the move because I had to go out of state for job training so I had to trust him completely to pick up my belongings from Fontana and deliver it all to Berkeley without my supervision. I didn't have the apartment keys to where I was moving in Berkeley so Pat even picked up the keys for me from the rental company and made sure they were delivered to me. I arrived in Berkeley from training an entire month after the move actually took place. I entered my apartment to find my bed already set up by Pat and my boxes organized. Nothing was broken ether which is something that always seems to happen when I hire movers. I have never even met Pat in person because I had to leave for training. I was only able to correspond with him through email and phone calls. For this reason I can say he is extremely trustworthy and I trusted him with all of my belongings. If you need to move then definitely hire Pat. I have moved a lot and I have never had a better moving experience.

My movers just left and requested a review as quickly as possible. I assured them that I would provide then with a 10 out of 5 star rating. Most importantly, the young men were respectful to my husband and I. I am 67 years old so I was on the young men from start to finish - making sure they were respectful of my belongings and home. They wrapped all of my furniture and assisting with packing items that were not packed upon their arrival. I did notice a small hole in the wall at the pick up address. Tight corners so I did not complain. But I did want them to know that I noticed. Other than that, my belongings arrived in great shape. I will recommend to my friend Margaret who will be moving in about 2 weeks. I informed her to request Mark and Stephen. Thanks again for your hard work. Spend your tip wisely.

The movers at AmerApex Moving could not have done a better job moving our belongings over 2,000 miles away. The crew was on time, polite, very careful, and kept the move fun and in good spirits. Nothing was damaged and the price did not budge a penny. Thank you again for making my move across country stress free. I will be recommending AmerApex Moving to all my friends and family!

Love this company! James is a true professional. He let me know by text every step of the way of our upcoming move and how soon the movers would be there. In today's world, you rarely find the professional conduct, ethics and follow-through like James' company. His workers were friendly, fast and efficient and nothing was damaged. I will use this company again and recommend them highly.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
