Specific behaviors to address
Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: I come to canine behavior modification after having been a practicing veterinarian for many years. This gives me a slightly different perspective from most trainers. I am comfortable working with anxious and aggressive dogs and determining when medication may be helpful for an individual dog. I am also familiar with the various supplements and products available to help dogs cope with separation anxiety and other issues. My favorite thing about what I do is watching a dog that was scared of lots of things become a relaxed and joyful dog who can enjoy walks with his humans and interactions with other dogs and people. Of course, I also love working with new puppies and helping them become well behaved members of their new families.

I absolutely endorse Lauren Flato and Sit Stay Wag Dog Training. First, Lauren is a vet; she knows when a problem is behavioral and when it should be checked by your veterinarian. Second, she specializes in animal behavior. This is not just an interest of hers, it is something that she has studied. Third Lauren simply "gets" animals. And more importantly, Lauren "gets" owners. My husband, our pup Abby and I are living proof. My husband and I were brand new dog owners of an adorable, but very scared ~2 year old rescue that spent 7 weeks in the Oakland pound - a kill shelter filled primarily with Pit Bulls and aggressive Chiuauas. Although Abby - a 14 lb Maltipoo mix has always been a little snuggle bug with us, she was snippy, barky and unpredictable with anyone else. We went to other trainers who told us that our dog was aggressive, dangerous and "needs to be reprimanded and know she is not the alpha in your house." Although we didn't know anything about dogs, this intuitively just didn't seem right. In utter desperation after several missteps with other trainers I found the website for American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior which led me to Lauren. From the first home visit, I knew we were in the right hands. Lauren provided clear information and explanations about what was happening. She provided simple homework assignments and shared the importance of confidence, consistency and patience. No matter how much or how little Abby seemed progressed from visit to visit, Lauren always found something positive about Abby's behavior - or ours! Today Abby is an entirely different dog. She no longer cowers when we call her; she happily accepts petting from our friends and can walk down the street without barking at every single person she passes. She's not perfect and neither are we, but we continue to work and improve. We're currently practicing the skills and lessons that Lauren taught us and will continue to consult with her for refreshers or additional advice as the need arises. If you have a dog with problems - or you are a new pet-owner without past experience - do yourself and your dog a favor and call Lauren. There is only upside to working with Sit Stay Wag Dog Training!

Lauren is probably one of the best trainer I have ever had for my dog. She is patient and comes up with unique ideas for training. I would not want anyone else traing my service dog. She believes in giving treats, and no raised voices when the dog does something wrong. Moki and I were extremely satisfied with Lauren and consider her part of our family.

I have seen Dr. Flato for 2 training sessions. An initial evaluation and 1 follow up. I plan to continue working with her. She has been training my new Miniature Schnauzer puppy. She has excellent credentials (attended one of the best veterinary schools in the country). Even though her work is as a trainer, I appreciate her background as a vet. She is very knowledgeable, thorough, and straightforward in explaining her rationale behind different training techniques, which are based on positive reinforcement operant conditioning. Time in training sessions are well utilized. She is involved with her field and professional community and cares about the well-being of animals. I would recommend working with her.
