About

I have taught school for many years. I am familiar with the common core standards and entrance and exit standards of specific grade levels. It is all about helping the student improve and thereby boost his/her self-esteem and confidence in the areas in which I tutor them. As a teacher, I had tremendous test scores. Four of my five "children" (now adults) have received the presidential academic award. I attended very difficult college prep school prior to college which provided me with stellar skills. I have had several years of Latin, French, and Spanish, as well as the usual repertoire of subjects.

A wonderful 5 stars. Kristen tutored my 7 year old son in reading and writing during the summer. I thought I would quote Kristen from a few of the updates she emailed us as I feel this aptly captures Kristen’s dedication, quality and professionalism as a tutor: “My hope is to help James feel authority and confidence when he chooses a book. The "quality" of the reading material is less important than the habit. No matter what he reads, he is becoming a better reader as long as he engages with the book… Learning to write is a procedural practice, meaning we wear it into our brains like a groove in a record. The improvement will happen over time. By the end of the week James could read his own writing back to me. At the beginning of the week, he couldn’t. Also he proposed his own writing assignment in lesson three. That self-challenging initiative is a good sign. That means he understands how to utilize tutoring, how to create an idea out of nothing, and how organize his thoughts around that idea. He dictated the piece and then I recited his dictation and assisted with spelling of larger words as he wrote. He clearly wanted to communicate his thoughts on soccer in writing…” My son ended the summer with a book about dinosaurs that he wrote and illustrated with Kristen facilitating the process and discovered a confidence and enthusiasm for reading and writing. We are grateful for Kristen’s help.

About

My name is Nicholas Chew, and I am currently a rising senior at Saint Francis High School. I have loved learning since a young age and would love to share my passion for learning to prospective students. I am also very extroverted and energetic, so I will have no problem befriending and having fun with the students while also making sure to efficiently teach them critical thinking, organization, and communication skills. I have also tutored many subjects on behalf of my school's California Scholarship Federation - Tutoring Club for over 35 hours and have a 3-year experience as head coach of a middle school basketball team, so I understand how to motivate others. I can tutor any subject. I can also drive directly to any house or meet at a mutual meeting place.

About

Because we are small, we are able to offer a far more personalized approach than many large tutoring houses. Yet, we have the tools, training, and know-how of a large academic institution. For each student, we systematically work to identify problems, and then collaboratively create a plan to solve them using innovative curriculum design. Above all else, we are passionate about what we do! We care about genuine knowledge and understanding: we look beyond the numbers. We teach students to set their own goals, not merely jump through the hoops in front of them. We strongly believe that any student can succeed with the right combination of guidance, enthusiasm, and challenge.
