I studied Hebrew with Carl and really enjoyed his teaching. He was patient, answered all of my questions and was willing to accommodate my schedule. Carl also took the time to find me a study guide/book to use. I had to take a hiatus due to my busy work schedule but look forward to working with him again soon. Thank you Carl!

Chris was very attentive and informative. He was able to edit and provide me with powerful reasons why I should reword various sentences. I would recommend him wholeheartedly. His work was on time, worth the cost, and his experience in writing is helpful in guiding and supporting anyone new or old in the process. Skip took on a job that was pretty big and what made matters worse, a person that had just neglected the fundamentals of writing. It's not that I don't know them, I was just too lazy to apply them the way they should be. He reminded me of it. I asked him to be brutally honest and he was. The wonderful thing about him, he later pointed out the good things I was doing right and eventually made my confidence skyrocket. The job your asking me to describe is not only Skip helping me with the book I am working on, but him guiding me and restoring my confidence to get me back in the fight after being knocked down by life, people and dare I say editors and publishers. He made me realize putting forth my best effort in a world that is so competitive is just too important to forget. You ask what went well with Skip? Everything, but what stood out the most was his honesty and clarity of various situations and problems. The quality of his work and guidance is excellent and I couldn't ask for any better advisor. Nothing could improve my experience with him, that's how impressed I am with him. Thanks Skip and I look forward to continuing to work with you. Sincerely, Jeffrey L. Ivory

Mr. Morris-Lent helped me with my applications to get into NYU and The New School. I am pleased to say that with his help I got into both! He's a great writer and helps you put your thoughts onto paper. He has a pretty flexible schedule and makes time for you if you need it. All in all, he's a great tutor to hire. Thanks!

My company has used many copywriters and content creators in the past... Not by choice, but because we hadn't been able to find a reliable punctual source for content. Well, the search is over!! Kate is an amazing writer. Her style has just the right mix of wit and professionalism to make even the most mundane subject interesting. We highly recommend!!!

I have been working with Emily for a year now, and it has been an enjoyable and productive working relationship. I hired Emily because of her strong writing and editing skills, which have remained consistently great, and I’ve been impressed with her professionalism, communication regarding deadlines, and the positive manner in which she takes feedback and then fits her material to exactly what I’ve asked for. Emily has been creating discussion guides for books, and I have been able to trust that when I assign her a project, the resulting guide will be thoughtful, intelligent, and accessible. You will find Emily a pleasant person to work with, and I’d recommend her work with no reservations!

I'm in the process of advancing my career and I decided to use the services of a resumé writer/career counselor to help me get to the next level of my chosen profession. I chose the services of Kevin Kreiger because I could sense a level of honesty and integrity through his Thumbtack Profile and his Counsel-ink website. The service and support he provides are well worth the fee. He isn't simply writing a resumé for me; Kevin is taking me on a journey of self discovery. He asks probing questions that make me think deeply about myself, my calling and my chosen career. I am very capable of writing my own resumé, but I would not have had the holistic view of how I've evolved both personally and professionally. Kevin and I have been able to work together in a meaningful way to create a representation of me of which I am very proud. Kevin's career counseling services have been embedded in our conversations and through the work we've done on my resumé. In fact, I've discovered that I have a Curriculum Vitae rather than a resumé. The questions Kevin asks about aspects of my work and personal history is really making me think about my life's work in the future. It has been a pleasure working with Kevin and I would highly recommend him for resumé writing and career services. He has done an outstanding job and I'm grateful for the partnership we've formed around this project.

Amy is all about focus. That's what I gained from working with her on several different writing projects: a better understanding of how to focus my work. Amy cares about the unity and clarity of the final product, and she's passionate and thorough in her guidance toward those ends. With Amy, you're asked to consider what each sentence adds to the whole. She hates waste and has a keen eye for it. Through working with her, I've developed a better sense of writing as communication - how to get an idea across, how different readers will interpret different words and concepts, how editors and publishers will judge writing in ways the novice writer might not be prepared for. I think of myself as a more astute writer for Amy's guidance, with a clearer understanding of the place my writing can have in the world. But the best thing about working with Amy is getting to discuss writing with someone who cares about the craft in a more than superficial way. Amy isn't just a teacher; she's a scholar and a stylist, a creator and a critic. Her knowledge and interests cover a wide range of topics and disciplines, and she brings that rounded background to bear on each project she takes on. I'm lucky to have had her in my corner.

Helga edited my book, The Reason. Since it is my first book and a complex plot, it needed a lot of editing and polishing. Helga was always courteous and professional, and always met the deadlines that we had agreed upon. She understood my novel well and what I was trying to accomplish. She gave positive criticism as well as areas that had to be changed and corrected. She never told me what I wanted to hear, but what I needed to hear to make my project a better book and me a better writer. She was available for phone and email consultation both day and night and weekends. I learned a tremendous amount from her and would not be the writer I am today without her. Of course the proof is in the manuscript and I have had multiple publishing offers and my book will hit bookshelves next spring. I highly recommend Helga and welcome any further inquiry of me.

Bonnie helped write amazing content for a large non-profit pancreatic cancer organization. From web content to brochures she truly has a talent in many fields of writing. Working together she helped write for landing pages we A/B tested, which ultimately led to more conversions. Bonnie also helped set the tone and voice, focus on the value proposition, and connect with users which led to lower bounce rates and more engagement throughout the website. The turnaround time was quick and she is an easy person to work with. She is a writer with tons of experience and would definitely recommend her to anyone looking for a true professional.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.
