Thank you, Tom!!! Tom came out on July 4th to help me, after another Thumbtack “pro” no-showed the prior day. AMAZING. It was a fairly simple job but it meant a great deal to me that he completed it on a holiday. Tom was totally professional, polite, and helpful in every way. I highly recommend Tom and will definitely reach out to him again for home repairs needs.

Adrian did a great job on our fountain repair in our backyard. It needed to be rewired and the pump replaced. Not only did he do this but he took it a step further to add a waterproof outlet with a timer as well as rewire the electricity source so that we could maintain two available outdoor outlets. He is the only one that responded to my job request, was professional and friendly, and completed the job on time for a very reasonable price. I would recommend you hire him for your project or repair job! Thanks so much, Adrian. Our fountain looks great again!

It was a good experience with a professional, the work looks good and the repairs have warranty as I found out with J.R. having to come back out to take care of a small issue. I'm looking forward to having him take care of other projects.

Did an excellent job and has outstanding customer service. I would definetly hire Chris again. In an industry where irrigation repair is a dime a dozen, I was very pleased with Chris's work and his peronsability to the job.

Just as described, AJ said for $89 he would inspect and even take care of any small repair if needed. He showed up on time. His inspection showed that we had bad wiring coming into the house. AJ called our electrical company and they came out to do the repairs. He charged the $89 which was what I expected. All in all no surprises and everything was perfect.

I’m a handyman who knows nothing about electrical. When I came across some electrical issues I called a friend I trust to see if they knew an electrician. My friend referred Mr. Poole and I was very pleased with him all around. I thought that I may need to replace about a dozen exterior lights on a property and almost order them but Mr. Poole advised me they could be repaired. In stead of my client having to spend over 2 grand on new lights they were able to all be repaired for about $75! Overall he’s a solid guy.

Mission Electrical Contractor was the first one to call me and inquire about the electrical problems that I was having at my home. Jeff was also the first to make a quote and schedule a service call. These two facts got him the job. He drove about 45 miles to get to my location. When he got here, he inquired about the details of each task I needed him to trouble-shoot and fix. I immediately pegged him as someone who knew his job and he was very efficient at it. Customer service seemed very important to him. If I need someone to perform an electrical service in the future, he will be the contractor that I will call. I was very satisfied with his work. His fee was very reasonable. Very personable.

We were extremely satisfied with Eric and will highly recommend him to anyone that needs drywall repair. I am used to doing my own work and was always a perfectionist with my projects but health conditions have sidelined me. We had a 4'x10' section of ceiling that was damaged from an upstairs water leak. Eric was very clean, he covered up everything and took the time that was needed to do a quality repair job. He is definitely a good value, very competitive pricing! If you're looking for an experienced repair professional, Drywall Patch Pro is the way to go!

He was hired and totally paid to perform a simple job and didn’t complete the job and promised to finish the job the following weekend. He didn’t show up and claimed he wasn’t feeling well and then never followed up again and took my money. I ended up having to go the Home Depot and buy materials and finish the job myself.

First to respond on a Friday late afternoon. He's doing a job in Palm Springs. Tells me on his way back home that he will stop in Redlands to check on a rental unit with no hot water. Arrives at tenants home and calls me to tell me its a thermocouple gone bad in the water heater and that he has one on hand and will be able to repair the water heater. Completes repair and has a customer for life. Great job Luis!

Dean was very responsive to my needs and would not hesitate to hire him again. We discussed the scope and costs of my project and he did exactly what we discussed and provided valuable input to help complete the project to ensure it was done right. I own a custom home so many contractors try to take advantage of this but Dean was honest and charged me a very reasonable price. Nice job!

Mr. Kent replied promptly to my request. We made an appointment and he showed up and within ten minutes and had repaired what I had tried for several hours to do. He had the knowledge and proper tools. His charge was perfectly acceptable and I will hire him again without qualification.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
