I would highly recommend Sos. We hired Sos after speaking with several different handymen. He refinished our hardwood floors, moved a bedroom door, removed some tile and completed a few other smaller jobs. He was professional and went above and beyond what we asked him to do. I was very pleased with the quality of his work.

Excel Construction worked at me house doing a big remodeling. I had to remodel 2 bathrooms &Kitchen. In addition to that, they installed new hardwood floor around the whole house. The new floor was an engineered floor. The bathrooms remodeling included everything from tiles, vanity, lights, shower and bath tub to paint and switches. The kitchen remodeling included all the new cabinets, island with counter top, new sink, appliances and counter top with back splash. The work was done by several teams of people that managed by the company and they did a great job! I had no issue with the people that worked at my house and more than that, I was in touch with only 1 person (Eyal). This company was very professional, reliable and honest with me and I will hire them in the future.

Vahe did an incredible job on removing some very cheaply installed carpet from my staircase. He was able to save the original wood and make them match my flooring. He was able to work on this project very quickly and stayed within a budget I could afford. I would definitely recommend him over anyone.

Oscar and his team came in to correct some previous work we had done that was substandard at best. He assessed the things we needed done and quickly began work. He and his crew covered our floor, furniture and belonging so nicely so paint and dust would not collect on them. I would recommend him because he knows how to communicate and evaluate your needs and does a great job. I will definitely be using him again for future projects.

If you're looking to refinish or install wood floors, look no further than Floorchain. From the first meeting with Armen, I was impressed with his knowledge and professionalism. He took the time to explain the whole process (including why paying an extra $2000 for staining, which is what other companies recommended, was not needed). This is a family company and his dad and cousin did the work. They showed up when they said they were going to show up and finished the job in a timely manner, and the results are beautiful. They truly care about their craft, and it shows. I am extremely happy with Floorchain, I love my floors, and I highly recommend them!

Ramon was friendly yet professional when he visited to see what the job entailed. (Sanding and staining areas of wood floor damaged across 2 rooms and trying to blend them in with existing flooring.). He followed through with appointment date and written estimate. His workers knew what they were doing and surprised me with a result that exceeded my expectations. Ramon stopped by while work was in process to make sure all was going well. When he realized the work would be completed earlier than expected he had his workers tackle other areas not included in estimate to improve overall quality of the floors. I was thrilled at how they had blended the new with old so well. Ugly stains gone! I recommend this company wholeheartedly.

Alfred's team was great to work with. They were quick and professional and were amenable to changes we had. He initially said the floors would take 4 days and the team only needed 3. Would recommend him and his team for any floor install needs! We had nasty carpet and laminate throughout the house and the new floors look amazing!

Matt from Westide Plus Hardwood Floors is an artisan. He beautifully refinished my 1938 hardwood floors and found the identical hardwoods to match for new areas I had him install. His prices are fair and his workmanship shows the love of his trade. Thanks, Matt!

Gerardo and his team have been super proficient, they did an excellent job at refinishing our 100-year old hardwood floors. Not only they meticulously fixed some sanding grooves we accidentally made when trying to sand the floor ourselves, but they also provided us with another stain which was a better fit than the one we initially bought. Their bid was also unbeatable. Bottomline is: Gerardo’s work is flawless and very reasonably priced, we strongly recommend!

Home Designers and Contractors did an excellent job for me with several projects: -- repairing and reinstalling bamboo wood floors, -- installing waterproofing elements on my guest house, -- refinishing 1928 original oak floors (despite some really awful glue that was used on top of them for parquet floors), -- installing a brand new kitchen (lighting, floors, cabinets, new appliances, custom quartzite counter, sink, electrical, etc). -- repairing patio tiles and creating a concrete swell for the water drainage Al and his team do quality work at reasonable prices. My home is much more beautiful and functional because of Home Designers and Contractors.

Jason helped me move a huge couch from the 2nd floor of my building. The couch wouldn’t fit in the stairwell or elevator, so Jason brought his rope and equipment to help swing it over the rail. Overall excellent, very responsive and dependable person to work with.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
