Otto arrived on time and we agreed on the scope of the gardening needed and the fee for bi-monthly gardening. The garden looked lovely, and we are looking forward to additional plantings and putting our "stamp" on our new home and landscape. I have no hesitation providing this review for the work provided by Otto/Meathead Landscaping.

Adrian is A GEM! Seriously, I could not be happier with his work. 1) He was easy to communicate with and very responsive. He texted frequently, was always honest and reliable on when he would come to me, and he was extremely personable and knowledgeable about his craft. 2) His work is BEAUTIFUL. One of the trees he trimmed went from horribly over-grown to looking like a Japanese Bonsai tree. He literally didn't cut corners anywhere on our property (which EVERY other gardener has). 3) He is very reasonably priced! He also didn't over or underestimate how much the work would cost and how long it would take. Many other guys have quoted me lower prices, but stopped before the job was done because they underestimated the scale of our job when quoting their price. Adrian accomplished every.single.thing that he said he would accomplish.. I honestly think the work he did warrants a higher price than I paid him. I think if I had gone elsewhere I would have paid the same price to get my tree trimmed in such high quality, let alone doing the entire yard (front and back) for his quoted price. We've hired him to be our maintenance gardener, and also to do an installation of a few yard in a few months. I would definitely hire him for anything you need done on your property. I'm really glad I found him and I look forward to working with him more in the future.

We had decided to remove our lawn during the drought. We found Kyle on Thumbtack and, after looking at some of his work via his portfolio, decided to have him come out and kick some ideas around. Kyle put together a design idea for our front yard. He gave us some options as well to meet our price point, and was very generous with his time; we spent a lot of time around the table, looking at pictures he brought with him, selecting materials, and choosing plants that were appropriate for our climate zone. We never felt pressured during the process- Kyle has a very calm and unhurried demeanor. He also is very realistic about working within your budget. Once the work was scheduled, I was pleasantly surprised by how things unfolded. I've had contractors do work for me before, and I had experienced a much more unpredictable schedule that made me feel like my job was one of many on their plate. Not so with Kyle. The work was done exactly as he scheduled it. Even though he had other jobs, I'm sure, I never felt like our job was ever put on a back burner. After the job was done, I had a few other irrigation issues to solve elsewhere on the property. I didn't hesitate to call Kyle to help me out, and he'll be the first person I call next time I have landscape work to do. My only complaint is that now the neighbors keep standing around gawking at my front yard! I added pre, mid, and post photos of the project.

I wanted a clean, modern xeriscape design to replace an overgrown lawn of crabgrass. I have a mid-century style house and preferred a clean look over mulch. I shared some ideas and she ran with it. The end result is a contemporary design of decomposed granite, succulents and drought tolerant flowering plants. She also installed beautiful stone pathways and a patio area with pavers and pebbles. I enjoyed working with Angela and her team. She was proactive, resourceful and made the whole experience easy for me. When I wanted to make changes while the work was in progress, she worked with me every step of the way. The end result is beautiful and better than I could have imagined. Angela Price can design the garden of your dreams. Professional, organized, knowledgeable, flexible, and creative. Give her your ideas, pictures, sketches, or nothing at all and she will magically transform your space.

Lavonne at All About Landscape and her crew were a pleasure to work with. We had an odd request; we wanted to take our time while we changed our green (sort of) lawn and rose garden into a desert, drought-resistant yard. She was very accommodating and agreed to take the lawn out only while we decided what to do next. About a month later, her crew installed a curving walkway with two steps and flagstone trim, which is beautiful. Another week and we had a dry river bed put in. Several weeks later, and after many long discussions, she helped us decide on our major trees and eventually the rest of the plants, all on a drip line. Not very many landscape designers would have the painstaking patience for our demands. Her crew was very dependable and left the yard neat and tidy every day. They worked through the Santa Ana winds and a few days of 106 degrees. I would highly recommend All About Landscape.

Working with the crew at Pasadena Gardening & Tree Service was always a positive experience. I hired them to install a Japanese style garden on a property with landmarked trees. They were extremely helpful through the whole project, even meeting with the president of the homeowners association regarding the landmarked trees. It would be my great pleasure to work with them again.

I hired Jane to entirely redesign our garden and in particular to remove the lawn in the frontyard and put a water-friendly landscape. It was very easy to work with Jane. She has an impressive knowledge of plants and landscaping. She took the time to listen to our ideas before submitting her designs. She then helped us select a landscaper and she supervised the entire process. She was very hands on, always easy to reach. She knew how to reassure us when we were in doubt about all the changes. I am glad we listened to her, our new garden is beautiful and I really love it. I highly recommend her and I would definitely hire her again.

Sarah did an excellent job landscaping my front yard.We changed it from lawn to drought tolerant plants with a drip system. With her eye for design and her knowledge of plant she came up with a fantastic plan. I really enjoyed the process including going to the nursery with Sarah to pick out plants. She worked with my gardener on the installation but also has people she works with on a regular basis to do the installation while she makes sure everything is going according to plan. I highly recommend her.

I echo the previous reviewer's notes on Derek. Not only did Derek do a great job, but he really helped me elevate my green thumb knowledge. His pricing was competitive and hisck tractor Jose was incredibly timely in executing the garden implementation and finishing the project. As a side, Derek himself was a pleasure to work with. Very cheery and pleasant. I highly recommend Derek.

I am a real estate developer is Los Angeles and had the pleasure of meeting Rolando at a building I purchased in Echo Park. The building had been terribly neglected by the previous owner and during my initial inspection of the property I was pleasantly surprised so see a small oasis in the middle of this barren wasteland in the form of a garden and an artists studio on the rear patio. I was so impressed with Rolando's efforts to maintain and elevate the property with no budget that I offered him the position of manager and gave him a small budget to turn his oasis into a thriving cactus garden. He did a wonderful job. I have since purchased another property in the area and immediately commissioned Rolando to turn the front yard and entrance area into a contemporary, high end fascade. Because of his artistic and creative wherewithall, he exceeded my expectations of him by adding a contemporary wood panel fence which he laquered and added above ground pots to create a true high end residence. He did all this on a budget and did not go above it. He was very professional and sent me pictures of all the items he would use and how it would look so there was no guessing game. Using Ro - as I now call him- is like getting a landscaper and designed all in one. He is very detail oriented. I will be using him for all my future projects. No question about it.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

      • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
      • Read online reviews of client experiences.
      • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
      • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
      • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
