My daughter and her friend have met with John 3 times so far for SAT prep. They have been very happy with each session. The first session was diagnostic and the subsequent sessions have been spent discussing problems and techniques. John is very easy to work with. They do not feel bad when they make mistakes or do not understand a concept. We plan to do a total of 10 sessions before taking the SAT.

We sat down and worked out with the practice test that was given to me for studying up on my college entrance exam. He was extremely helpful, working through all the problems step by step as I needed. Amazing work, will defiantly hire again.

Grace Wang is my Mandarin tutor, and I have been taking private lessons with her for many years, first for SAT II Chinese prep and then for advance reading, writing, and conversation. Grace has always been very fun and approachable, and we have a great time conversing and reading about a wide range of topics such as Chinese history, idioms, and daily life. Her own understanding of Mandarin is very strong, and she takes the time to explain the nuances of the language. She also utilizes many different resources: online learning tools, textbooks, novels, etc. Most importantly, Grace is very patient, knowledgable, and flexible. I can suggest any kind of material to review for our classes, and she will always have insightful things to add. I always look forward to my Mandarin lessons with her!

Met with John once or twice a week over the course of several months during my GMAT preparation. I started out with a 13th percentile quantitative score. After working with him I was able score in the 73rd percentile on my first official GMAT, exceeded my initial goal by scoring ABOVE a 700. I had no formal quantitative training or experience prior to studying; the last math class I took was as a sophomore in high school (a decade ago). Each time I met with John, he was able to go beyond simply correcting my mistakes. He clearly explained the overarching reasoning, strategy and logic behind a certain problem. This is something the video explanations in GMAT curriculum do not do as thoroughly as John. If you're looking for someone to discuss GMAT concepts with in a clear and intelligent way, I highly recommend him. I also studied using curriculum like Target Test Prep, but John helped me tremendously by working through the problems I struggled with step by step and identifying any weak spots in my quant skills. He understands the GMAT and is able to identify the kinds of questions that likely would or would not appear on the exam. Finally, John served as a strong source of moral support throughout a challenging three months of study atop a full time job. When I wanted to try a new curriculum or ask him about tricky questions via email, he would always offer thoughtful feedback in response. His responses were especially helpful when I scored low on practice exams; John's feedback always helped me put things in perspective and helped me get back up and try again. He was very flexible and willing to work with my schedule and make time when needed, often on short notice. In short, I couldn't have done it without him!

Yevgeny tutored my son for about 6 month to prepare him for SAT Subject test Math 2 and the Math portion of SAT. My son liked his style of teaching - giving small hints to guide him to find the right answer. In addition Yevgeny was able to explain complicated mathematical concepts in simple words. I strongly recommend Yevgeny as Math tutor.

Anish is an excellent GRE tutor. He offered to tutor me one-on-one in order to accommodate for my busy school schedule. He is very good at explaining challenging reading comprehension questions in simple yet clear ways and always stop to make sure I understand everything. Also, he asks what I would like to focus on before each session to make sure he covers all aspects that I want to improve upon. I would highly recommend him to anyone who needs help with GRE.

Angela really helped me improve my SAT score! I worked with Angela for three months before the December SAT. Together, we went from 650 on SAT Reading to 750. It was an amazing improvement and I am so happy for my experience with Angela. She is really knowledgeable about the test and knows tips and tricks to help you read faster and more effectively.

Kaitlin was my writing tutor for my college essays. She was very helpful throughout the process. The thing I liked most about working with Kaitlin was she gave me the freedom to devise my own ideas and writing tactics for the essays while she refined and perfected them. Kaitlin not only aided me in constructing well written essays, but also helped me become a better creative writer and learn advanced grammar rules that I could apply to my writing and standardized testing such as the SAT and ACT. She was very helpful and easy to work with.

Josh was an awesome SAT tutor for my son, increasing his scores 110 points in just a few weeks of tutoring. Prior to Josh, my son was enrolled in a commercial SAT prep course: 3 hours on Friday evenings and six hours on Saturdays along with 11 other students. My son did not respond well to the group setting. These sessions could not hold his attention, and it became a weekly battle to get him to go. After a few weeks, he quit the course and decided that individual tutoring would be a better option. Josh’s style of personalized attention offered my son the back and forth interaction he needed to maintain interest and motivation. He had a great depth of knowledge (Yale graduate), as well as a warm and personal demeanor. He took the time to understand my son’s individual style of learning and identified the areas with which he needed more assistance. In summary, my son benefitted greatly from Josh’s talents, and I would highly recommend him to anyone needing one-on-one and personalized attention.

Aanchal was a terrific SAT tutor. She helped me identify problem types I was struggling with, and worked with me to develop strategies to tackle these. She had me feeling comfortable for the SAT on the day, which was great! Aanchal also gave me advice throughout the daunting college admissions process, which was a huge help. Very grateful!

I have a very flexible schedule and provide one-on-one personalized tutoring where and when it is convenient for you. I am an MBA with a 3.86 GPA and many years of experience in financial planning and analysis, accounting, and management. I am in the top 1% on standardized tests, and excel at understanding difficult concepts and how to explain them to others. I charge $35-50 per hour for one-on-one tutoring.

      About

I currently attend UC Davis and am employed as a tutor at a top tutoring company that only hires individuals with exceptional tutoring skills, a top SAT score, and a high GPA. I have spent over 500 hours tutoring and received additional tutor training while working at a nonprofit for literacy for 4 years. In addition, I am a founding member of a nonprofit organization that provides tutoring to underprivileged children in various subjects. I provide experienced, individualized tutoring to individuals that need help in language arts, essay writing, and grammatical skills as well as scoring high on their SAT reading and writing, AP English, and AP literature tests that is time efficient. I can also work separately or together as a college adviser in order to perfect your child's undergraduate application to any of the universities or colleges, guide them in creating the most attractive application, and help them produce an unrivaled essay. As a current University of California, Davis student, I personally took the AP English, AP literature, and SAT exams recently (2 years ago), so I have an advantage in knowing exactly what the current tests ask of students as well as what strategies should be learned in order to achieve a score that is highly desirable and sought after by top universities. I know the right methods and tactics to get your child a better score; guaranteed. I also understand what most colleges are looking for in a student, and I can guide your child in writing brilliant essays to get noticed in the midst of tens of thousands of applicants. I have years of teaching experiences from my job as an editor at my high school's award-winning school newspaper, in addition to working at a nonprofit in San Jose and learning exactly how to teach English effectively. My education began in elementary school at the private school Challenger School, where I learned from the best grammar and literature teachers to build my foundation in English. Later on, I went on to attend Leland High School where I was a member of the number one speech and debate team in the nation and first medalist of various speech tournaments, President of the National Honor Society (organization that connects academically achieving students with volunteer opportunities in the community), volunteer of over 500+ hours from tutoring underprivileged children in low income areas, page editor for the award-winning school newspaper The Charger Account, and winner of numerous accolades for my involvement in the community including: Leland High School's Jefferson Award (given to one student once a year for exemplary work in the community) and Senior Recognition Award for Academic Work and Involvement in the Community. My SAT scores in critical reading and writing rank in the 96th percentile in the nation, and I graduated in 2013 in order to attend University of California, Davis as a managerial economics major. I work as a part time tutor to make extra money for college and help fund a non-profit for which I used my expertise in writing to create a business plan for, and I started the organization to help underprivileged children that go to schools with poor reading comprehension in order to provide them with free tutoring in writing and reading. My style of teaching involves importance placed on the basics of grammar, writing, and effective test taking; I believe that once a student has this foundation down, any question on the SAT or AP exams is completely approachable and easy to solve. In juxtaposition with my own personal test-taking strategies, I also implement the same strategies taught at many of the top SAT prep centers to ensure that your child is getting thorough tutoring sessions. For students that need help in English or writing, I lay down the basics for your child, show ways of developing creativity, and teach them how to write effectively and well. I work with your child's talents and provide a very personalized experience that changes dynamically in order to achieve your child's highest potential and give the best tutoring possible.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.

What is in the SAT test?

As your child is preparing for the SAT, it’s helpful to know the specifics of the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is made up of three main categories and one optional essay. Students have a total of three hours to take the test, with an additional 50 minutes for the optional essay. In total, there are 154 questions. During SAT prep, it’s helpful to take timed practice exams to understand how you’ll do during the actual test. Here is a brief overview of each of the four categories:

      • Reading: 65 minutes with 52 questions. The Reading test measures command of evidence, words in context, analysis in history and social studies, and analysis in science.
      • Writing and Language: 35 minutes with 44 questions. The Writing and Language test covers the same topics as Reading, as well as expression of ideas and standard English conventions.
      • Math: 80 minutes with 58 questions. The Math test looks at the student’s understanding of algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, and advanced math in the context of fluency, conceptual understanding, and applications.
      • Essay (optional): 50 minutes with 1 essay. The essay will demonstrate the student’s competency with writing, analysis and reading.
