We had a good experience with Ani. She did face painting, glittery tattoos and balloon twisting at our child's 3 year birthday party at a park. Everybody was happy. She was also good in responding right away if I had any questions before the party. Would recommend. Value for the money.

I hired Noella for a work event and her henna art was a total hit! Besides her beautiful work, she was also very easy to work with. She was punctual for our event (actually even early), very responsive to my many questions and very friendly and approachable with our employees. We plan on hiring Noella again for future and upcoming events.

Alpa is by far my favorite dancer!! She's amazing. I have been watching her dance for years and she never ceases to amaze me and the people watching. She choreographed a dance for a wedding we both attended & made dance practices fun & energetic. I'm definitely not a dancer & take more time to pick up steps than most people yet she was so patient with me. She made sure I had the positions correct & if I didn't then she practiced with me until I had it perfected. She's not only full of energy but has a warm-hearted passion for dance. She also keeps up to date on Bollywood songs and what's hot at the moment. :) And Alpa wear many hats as she also is a great henna artist. Her designs are beautiful & does a great job. I would definitely recommend her for any occasion you are looking to hire a henna artist. Thanks Alpa!! You make me want to dance!

Rebeca is an incredible henna artist. I have gotten henna tattoos from her several times and have always been amazed at how cool they look! Whether you have a specific image in mind or not, Rebeca can cater to your henna wishes. The other day, I showed her a picture of an elephant with a lot of detailed designs and she replicated it beautifully. And she's a great person to talk to, which makes the holding still part fly by! The whole process with Rebeca is really fun and rewarding. I highly recommend going to her for your henna tattoo.

I've got over a dozen tattoos, and Ross has done the best of them. He does great lines, genius shading and always has an awesome color scheme. Not only does Ross know how a tattoo should look, he knows how to execute it. He's a real artist. If I have an idea, he can draw it up like I want. It always comes out way better actually. I really like that he works out of a private studio. No wing nuts off the street.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does a henna tattoo stay on?

Typically a henna tattoo stays on anywhere from one to three weeks. Henna artists work with henna paste, also called mehndi, which dyes the skin for a short period of time. An important part of Indian culture, the use of henna has become increasingly popular in the United States, with henna artists providing henna tattoos for weddings, as event entertainment and for other special events. Henna artists typically apply their designs to the palms and backs of the hands, the wrists, up to the elbows, and from the feet up to the knees. To preserve the rich color of your henna tattoo and help it set, avoid water as much as possible within the first 24 hours of application. The color will be richest during the first week. Brides may want to have their henna tattoos applied one or two days before the wedding for optimal results.

What is the meaning behind henna tattoos?

Henna tattoos, as they are called in the United States, have a long tradition in Indian, African and Middle Eastern cultures. For centuries, the leaves of dried henna plants have been ground into a fine paste to be used as a temporary and nontoxic skin dye. This form of body decoration has been used in celebrations, weddings and ceremonial rites of passage in many cultures. Often in Hindu weddings, henna artists decorate the hands and feet of the bride (and at times the groom) with intricate designs. In some Muslim traditions, henna artists paint women with henna designs as they are in their final stages of pregnancy. In the United States, popular culture has adopted this beautiful body art and henna artists provide brides (and sometimes grooms) with temporary henna tattoos. Henna artists are also a popular choice for entertainment at corporate events, birthday parties, bachelorette parties and festivals. Henna artists may charge anywhere from $10 to $300 per hour.

How much does it cost to get a henna tattoo?

Nationally, the average cost to hire a henna artist is between $100 and $180 per hour. Rates will vary by location and the experience of the individual henna artist; it’s possible to find artists who charge less than $50 per hour. Some henna artists charge an hourly rate, especially for corporate events or festivals where they are providing service to multiple people within an hour. They may also charge flat rates for bridal and wedding services or special events. Here are some examples of average cost:

    • Hourly rate: $65-$85 or more per hour. Price is dependent on event size and number of attendees.
    • Starting rate for minimal palm designs: $15 or more.
    • Henna tattoos covering the hands and wrist and bottom of feet up to the ankle: $175.
    • Henna tattoos covering the hands to the mid-arm and feet to above the ankle: $300.
    • Henna tattoos covering the hands to the elbow and the feet to the knee: $450.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
