I was very impressed with Keith Thompson. He was flexible and accommodating with scheduling, arrived a few minutes early, and did a very good job painting. There was some existing damage to one wall and he pointed it out to me, outlined 2 ways to repair and the pros and cons of each. I went with his suggestion and the room looks fantastic. We'll definitely use him for our painting needs in the future.

Matthew was thoughtful, informative and very communicative in the lead-up to my selecting him for some stair repair work. He and his team delivered on time and within budget, consistently providing unsolicited updates as he went. I could not be happier with the work or the interaction through project. I highly recommend Matthew for anyone seeking help with their residential reconstruction projects!

Jeff did a fantastic job. I had several holes in the wall in a bedroom. I really thought I would need to replace the drywall however Jeff came in and fixed all the holes and painted the room. You can't tell there were holes there. Very professional man. Everything was cleaner when he left! I will use him again. I'm so happy with the job he did!

Bogdan was able to come the next morning to help us with our faucet install and a minor deck repair. He identified a valve under the sink that also needed to be replaced and went out to grab the replacement part for us on the spot. He was on time, had great communication and did everything we asked!

Pedros of pedros house painting did an excellent paint job (including the garage) for our 2 story single family rental property. His team did a very professional & totally satisfactory job at a very reasonable price, within a short turn-around time as promised. Pedros also repaired large holes in dry wall, repaired and re-textured water stained kitchen ceiling, both with very satisfactory results, repaired half broken door frame, repaired window screens. He did great touch ups for some rooms that we decided not to paint. I highly recommend him for painting and repair work around the house, and will re-hire him again for my future projects.

My experience with Dream Builders is somewhat mixed. I was very happy with how Sam jumped in and help me decide on using tile instead of a three piece plastic surround. He and his helper got right on the job of removing the old tile and damp and moldy sheetrock and insulation. The tub installation and plumbing went well. However, in terms of the new tile installation, I was a little disappointed in the rate of progress. Sam left the tile work to his helper and often was not on the job site to oversee critical portions of the tile work. I suspect this is what resulted in a less than perfect job in terms of matching tile spaces. Also, according to Sam, his truck was in the shop, along with various tools and parts. This meant some extra running around and loss of time to get needed items. In spite of these issues, I would recommend checking out Dream Builders , but I would be a little careful if your project includes tile work.

Rafael is a very skilled and knowledgeable gentleman with a lot of experience who can help trouble shoot problems and find solutions in a very efficient manner. I am so grateful for finding him through this website. He was able to successfully fix our electrical outlet problem and explain the wiring system in our rental space, and to help our landlords understand the root of the problem. He also was able to fix our dishwasher (which was not on our request), in less than 15 minutes! We have his card on our fridge now as our official local handyman. Highly recommend!

Rick did a great job for us in preparation for painting being done by our HOA. He did dryrot repairs, re nailing of siding, caulking, priming, and closing some gaps in trim which may have led to some pest problems if not dealt with. We will call on him again for any handyman work we need in the future.

I highly recommend Economy Home Repair, which recently completed a job at our 1910s house in Berkeley including replacement of some rotten siding, installation of two new windows, and painting all on the 2nd floor of the house. We could not be happier with our experience. Signing up with Kris was a no-brainer: his team has stellar reviews, his bid for the job was more than fair, and he arrived on-time for meetings and responded promptly to emails. This was extremely hard work - not the most fun job - and I was particularly impressed that Carl and his team completed the job safely after just 5 consecutive days. Given my prior experience with contractors and jobs that can extend for weeks or longer, it is unusual to get that kind of attention. All the materials were high quality, and I cannot find a single flaw in Carl's workmanship. Overall had a very positive experience, and I'm particularly happy to have found a trustworthy contractor I can turn to for future work.

I contacted Thumbtack looking for a contractor to install some siding along the back of my house where a deck had been removed and I got a quick response from Eddie from ER Builds & Repairs. He came out, gave me a quote and a few days later returned and did a wonderful job! He was on time, quick and very reasonable. The side of the house looks as if no deck had ever been there. I highly recommend Eddie. Eloisa M.

I recently hired Albert to repair the fence on my rental property in SF due to storm damage. He was prompt & courteous and attentive to my needs as a remote landlord. He gave me a fair estimate and sent pictures of the damage and explained the scope of the repair involved. After approval of the proposal, he executed the work in a timely matter and kept me updated on the progress & worked well with my tenant. Within 2 weeks, another storm caused some further damage to the property and he came promptly and repaired the problem, saving me hundred of dollars in the process. After 2 wonderful experiences, I employed him again to repair some lock and door knob issues that recently occurred as well. I would highly recommend him for any handyman services you might require as he is both honest, co-operative, punctual and trustworthy.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
