In short, I would highly recommend TJ with House to Home. I've already referred him to a friend, which is rare for me to do with contractors I've worked with in the past, but TJ earned it. If you want a contractor with an eye for detail, the skill to see it through and a pride of workmanship that ensures a quality job, then TJ's the guy. He was creative and tenacious about solving unexpected problems and he did so with a genuine consciousness for my budget. He removed my old double sink vanity, mirror, light and medicine cabinet. He did a beautiful job replacing them with the new fixtures, including all plumbing and electrical. TJ was both dependable and flexible. He was always careful about protecting the floor and surroundings and thoroughly cleaning up every time before he left. Thanks TJ!

James was fast, efficient, and solved every issue I had -- including coming up with ways to solve problems as they arose. He was very responsive -- i'm just now getting responses from people asking me to send them what i need and yet he finished the work 7 hours ago. He was careful, took the time to do the project right and didn't let obstacles slow him down. I would definitely use him again, and his contractor experience is a great help to whatever he was doing...he gets the job done!

I hired Excel Construction LA to a full interior remodel of a 1928 home that I purchased as a rental property, but quickly determined I had underestimated the amount of work and investment required to get it rental ready. As a casual landlord, I did not have much experience with remodeling, managing contractors, estimating costs, etc. But I loved the house and had a vision for what I wanted to create. I chose Excel Construction LA because I felt they understood my vision and would be flexible along the way. I was right and they proved to be a fantastic partner. Excel was always able to provide quality materials at a reasonable price, they were extremely flexible and accommodating working with my schedule and they produced quality work. The managed the entire permit process and went above and beyond to ensure all inspections were passed - not just the city's inspections, but also the buyer's inspectors. In the end, we turned a very run down home in South LA into a beautiful new home that sold for the top price point in the zip code - something local realtors said could not be done. Excel deserves a ton of credit for this. Nofar, Evan and the entire Excel team were super helpful and fun to work with, as was the sub, Jorge. Thanks Excel!

Thank you Cabrera's Electrical. We have had so much work done on our home, yet when our private contractor retired, we did not know what to do. Cabrera's had the most professional response online. We had (2) large ceiling fans to be installed, and needed electrical re-wiring of the (2) wall switches that would be used. His quote was what our retired contractor told us it should be. Our fans and new electrical are perfect. I plan on using him again for other projects that we have. We have already referred him to friends of ours. It's such a relief to find somebody who cares about your home, as much as you do.

Eduardo and his workers showed up on time, made proper assessments, and within 2 days the Bamboo floor looked new again. Lopez Hardwoodfloor demonstrated expertise that surpassed other contractors who had refused to sand deep scratches on a Bamboo floor. We are very pleased.

I am very pleased to write this review about Pablo Solis of P.S. Electric. The project I had was to install several Insteon dimmer switches in my home. Pablo tackled the work professionally and articulately. He is honest, humble and cares about the quality of his work. It was a pleasure working with Pablo and I have no doubt that I will give him my future electrical work.

Mr Ryan Landowitz is a contractor I worked with recently on a two story addition to a duplex. To begin withRyan took me to see other projects he had supervised and or worked on. All of the work was neat and in order .(professional grade). I did visit these sites more than one time as I made my decision on hiring a contractor. As the project began, there were no surprises. All progress was made in an orderly fashion. All payment schedules were kept as promised. Ryan returned all phone calls or text in a short amount of time. The project exceeded my exspectations. I highly recommend Ryan as a trustworthy construction manager. Thank you. sharon E Smith

We needed a room addition. Prior to hiring HLS we had 3 contractors give us estimates. Mike the owner of HLS was the 4th contractor who gave us an estimate. After evaluating all 4 estimates we decided to go with Mike because we saw Mike as a contractor and as a construction company owner who exercises very strong project management, problem solving and organizational skills, which we considered could bring special advantage to our project. Mike and his team performed strongly and Mike was hands on. We are greatly thrilled with the quality HLS has delivere.

Oscar Morales our draftsman has been very helpful on our home remodel. He is extremely knowledgeable and created architectural plans for us to submit our project to the City as owner/builder. His fees are very fair. He is a team player who works well with others, seeks out good resources, and has helped us to move forward on our project in a timely manner. I would highly recommend Oscar for your project.

We remodeled our master bathroom, kids bathroom, and kitchen with Skyline Construction. I strongly recommend Skyline to anyone looking for a responsible, transparent, communicative, and above all else, quality professional general contractor for remodeling, renovation, consulting, etc. Communication was timely, something extremely valuable with complex projects. Work estimates and risk factors has high accuracy with regard to both time and cost (this is a very uncommon feat in the industry). Quality of work and professionalism of workers on-site were supreme (I was personally present 2-3 times a day, every day). In addition to all this, Skyline continued to take care of us several weeks after the project was done and the contract ended. They made sure to take care to reseal, re-caulk, and/or fix any problems or flaws we found (we only found minor, trivial stuff) as we started living in the house and as fixtures, plumbing, tiles, and flooring begin to settle into their final resting positions. Skyline anticipated this settling, informed us that this is natural, and continued to send in their workers and technicians to make sure every single detail was excellently taken care of. Highly recommended. If you go with Skyline, you choose to go with a real pro. I am definitely hiring them for my next project.

Awesome experience! ? billy was on time everday... worked in a very professional manner and and paid attention to details. I hired him first for a fence for my dogs in the back to make an enclosure n he did it hassle free and even added a special wood feeding area with left over wood.. which was great. I then hired him again for my front fence which he faced an exsisting brick retaining wall i had and framed a wood fence on top of it. He was very patient with all the lil details i was asking for and handled my change of mind on the wood i was going to install. He handles it with stride! Nice guy and great worker all around. I would highly recommend to anyone. I also am hiring him again for work i need inside the house.

We worked with Rex Contractors on various projects actually. So we can say confidently that they do a great job. Dependable and communicate very very fast. Anytime that I had contacted them, I'm able to get a reach of them immediately or they get back to me right away. As for the projects themselves, they do a great job. We had Rex Contractors working on our house and a few relative's houses for mostly kitchen and bathroom remodeling. Each project turned out clean and beautiful. Big thumbs up to Miguel who did the tiling and Alex who did the hardwood floor. Those guys are super cool.

Gilbert knows what he is doing, his guys are great and get the work done right the first time. I am building my own home and i wish i hire Gilbert for slab and framing but i had already had it done when i met him. The work was 100% done right pass all inspections with green flags. communication was top notch. Cons: We agreed to have him install drop ladder that i supply he came to final inspection and collect his final pay and i left he said he would get it install. Came back and it was not install. I handle it but the principal was not there. I texted him to find out if he was planing to come back and pick up all the left over wood that they left (trash) never got a response. I am a plumbing contractor and i would never leave a job site the way he did unethical. That is why i left a 4 start but in reality a 3 start would of been well deserve. I have another project now and i do not know if i will use him again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
