Houman did excellent job at my new home. He was very particular, diligent, very keen and loves what he does. He is very open and upfront and brings in some cool ideas to the table. He installed recessed lights and successfully tried to find the color of the lights to my taste. I would definitely recommend him and surely hire him again for future work at my place.

Ed and his team were super supportive and very accommodating of our requests from the get go. Ed also gave his input with regards to color choices and was able to complete the painting of our entire home (2500 sq ft) within 4 days. His crew painstakingly worked night & day during the holidays and the finished job is very professional. We would highly recommend Ed Cardenas and his team to anyone with absolute confidence. Thank you Ed!!

I have a private resort Inn located in the Huntington Beach area very close to the Beach/PCH. Two of the rooms have great patio's that needed some color and ambiance. I called Angelika and she promptly drove all the way from the LA area to check out the walls needing the murals. I am very happy with our 2 new murals. One Sunset theme and one Beach theme, They are both beautiful and the guests love them! Angelika's work is amazing and she is very accommodating, professional and dependable! I plan to do another Mural soon and will definitely be calling Angelika. Thanks again from the Beso Del Sol Inn.

Debby is a lovely person and she designed my family room around one new piece of art that I love. The color palet is fresh and cool and totally changed the look and feel of the room Debby came up with great ideas that never crossed my mind. Such as a ballet bar with mirrored wall for my daughter who dances, and a growing wall of children's art. I would call upon her again !!!

Chiara is amazing! We gave her an almost impossible task of finding a design for our living and dining rooms that blends traditional, contemporary, funky, color, and our 1930’s bungalow architecture. She knocked it out of the park!!! 5 stars all the way!!!

We just agreed a few days ago to work together on my project, new floors, color analysis and painting plus a lighting plan (incl art studio) and installation for the entire house. And we are already 25% done. A rash is easy to work with and very committed to make you happy while delivering in a very timely manner. He brings all his skills to the project regardless despite the specifics- so extremely value add. He's taken a great weight off my shoulders while being a great team player and professional. I can't wait to see the completed project.

Christine is an artist. She has a great sense of design and color. I made changes to my dining room, living room, den, and entry. There were many obstacles to work around and she did this with grace, humor, and tact. All my calls, emails, texts, were answered promptly. I appreciated her tact in dealing with existing furnishings and the needs of my family. She helped to guide me to the best choices in furnishings and accessories. I loved working with Christine. I highly recommend her design services.

Kathy and Darren were both professional and personable. They contacted me within 24 hours of my submitting my information and set up an appointment to show me the various products they offered. They were knowledgeable and insightful, offering information that helped me to make a purchase that met my needs. They also did not give up when they discovered the manufacturer did not sent the hardware needed to install the valance for my vertical blinds on my sliding door. They were resourceful and came up with a solution that added to the beauty of the window treatment. The modern window treatments and color scheme have added a warmth and style to my home that I will enjoy for years to come. Thank you Kathy and Darren for being such a blessing and making this project such a wonderful experience. Angela

What can I say, she just gets me. Vee is a highly professional and creative soul who i vibed with from the start. She listened to my needs and then created space plans and color concepts from inspiration images. Vee helped me use my existing pieces and sourced new pieces for purchase. Her ideas were terrific and I couldn't be happier with the results.

We had a great experience working with Sandi! Our outdated family room and eating area needed some change, but we didn't know where to start. Sandi was able to transform the room into a modern space that's become our favorite place in the house! She was easy to work with and after the initial design consultation provided suggestions for specific items we wanted to purchase and created mood boards and 3D pictures so we could see what the room would look like. She has a great eye for design and provided advice on color selection, decor items, and furniture placement while making sure the room was family-friendly and would grow with us through the years. Sandi is warm, thoughtful, professional and makes the design and remodel process smooth and enjoyable. She was considerate of our budget, schedule and was easy to communicate with. I would highly recommend Sandi Kaneko Interiors!

We have hired Victoria Solomon twice, first to do a complete transformation of our half-finished basement into a mid-century modern, family-friendly space and most recently to re-model a partially finished living room. In the basement Victoria was challenged with an irregularly shaped space that required custom carpentry to re-frame a built-in bookshelf into a load-bearing wall to accommodate a flat screen television. Seating was provided by a sleek gray, low-slung sectional sofa paired with a chic white swivel chair. Accent pieces included a pair of square tan leather poufs, brass lamps, metallic end tables, a white marble table, wooden bench and an array of pillows in muted complimentary colors. Victoria did an excellent job of listening to our needs, understanding our aesthetic, and walking us step-by-step through the process. We could not be happier with the result. Victoria has worked with vendors to source window treatments, selected a bench for extra seating and is in the process of finishing lighting design to accentuate a newly acquired abstract painting that works well with the overall color scheme. Victoria has been instrumental in referring us to carpenters, interior painters, and vendors for custom furniture, pillows and window treatments. We have already referred Victoria to friends and colleagues, and would not hesitate to do so again in the future.

Ranj did an amazing job designing my master bedroom from the space planning, to the color selection, to the furniture, and accessories. Me being completely lost and confused with all the decision making she transformed my boring, lifeless room into a beautiful cozy room. Very satisfied and happy with her work. Would definitely recommend her :)

You will love working with Devlyn. From the timely, concise contract through the finishing touches, Devlyn Gorby is top notch! In the last six months, Devlyn has helped design and decorate two properties for us; one an older recently purchased home for my son and the other a small rental apt in Burbank. We are so happy with these beautiful, highly functional homes. The older home was transformed into a stunning modern property in less than two months including wall, ceiling and window treatment, lighting, art and all the furnishing. My little apt now has sleeping for four and dining for six. I reached out to Devlyn after twice purchasing a couch that wouldn't fit though the hall. If I'd started with her I would have saved more money! But I saved money anyway because Devlyn found sale furniture for me as well as a custom made reclaimed wood table. She also repurposed some of the furniture I had. Devlyn is a master in the use of color, lighting and proportion. She is also a great communicator and knows how to "make her client happy". She never dictates but draws out your ideas and preferences. I have high hopes that I will have the pleasure of working with Devlyn again one day and I'm sure that once you've worked with her you will feel the same.

Wow Laura was amazing. Not only did she bring a new look to my home. She also brought back to life some peices of furnature that I was going to get rid of. Her attention to detail and color really livened up the place. Now every time I come home I feel inspired. Thanks Laura for going above and beyond.

Chloe came to our house and within one hour she put together a design, color scheme and items that we needed. She was quick, efficient and easy to work with. Within a few days she sent us a list of items that we had discussed and had a mock picture of the items put together. This process has been so easy and Chloe has been easily available and keeps the communication open. When we were sold on an item, Chloe quickly gave us other options which we loved. I loved that she worked with our style! Once everything was ordered she made a second visit to help us organize, hang items and put bedding together. Our apartment is really coming together and we are so grateful for Chloe's help. She is the best!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
