Sharon says, "Eric and his team handled a pretty involved remodel for us, kitchen plus opening up the wall to the dining area and redoing the downstairs powder room. From the first walkthrough Eric was straightforward about what was realistic and what wasn't. He showed up to the site regularly, not just on the first and last day like some contractors. When we hit a snag with the original cabinet order being delayed, he had a backup vendor lined up the next morning. Project came in pretty close to budget with only one small change order that he explained before doing anything. Really glad we found a solid remodeler in Long Beach."See more

Elizabeth V. says, "We chose Ivy Contractors to turn our garage into an ADU. They were really easy to work with. In our first meeting they showed us example 3D renderings and real-life photos of what they had made for other clients. We really liked the ideas that they showed us and also the fact they were digitally-oriented, as we had already started our “vision” in 3D in Sketch-up. We gave their architect our design ideas and he turned it into drawings with all the necessary adjustments and details that they worked with our city to approve and then they continued working with the city for each inspection. The contract was very simple but thorough, with payments scheduled for each phase completed. We also really liked having the project details in one big group text-a simple but effective approach. The packaged concept of kitchen cabinets and flooring options we could choose kept the process streamlined, but we were able to bring in our own adjustments such as a big sliding wall. We also liked working with their interior and exterior designers, picking out colors and tile and bathroom cabinets and fixtures etc. who rendered it all in 3D for us. Every project has its hiccups but everything was always quickly addressed, and also Ivy was proactive catching problems too. The result was something spectacular in our humble opinion. In fact, when people in the neighborhood walk by, they are very complimentary and say things like “You did it right!”"See more

Jorge A Zaldivar says, "My siblings and I decided to remodel our parents house so it would be safer and more comfortable for them, and Top Family Construction helped make that happen. The project was pretty extensive new kitchen cabinets, updated bathrooms, new flooring, lighting, and some layout changes. James did a great job coordinating everything and making sure our parents understood what was happening each step of the way. The workers were respectful and very considerate since my parents were living in the home during most of the project. The transformation is really impressive and the house finally feels bright and updated!"See more

Brad A. says, "This review is overdue as we completed our remodel in November 2025, but we could not be more pleased with our new kitchen. The moment we met with our potential project manager Alex for the initial estimate we knew this is who we wanted to do our remodel. He is unmatched in his expertise, level of detail, and time management. We didn't realize until we had a smaller project done by a different contractor just how amazing he handled this project and all of the challenges and unexpected problems. Not only was everything done efficiently, but the quality of all of the work was amazing and everything was cleaned up so well. Any questions we had were answered in detail and any changes were laid out easily for us to understand. I hope Optimal will be able to help us again in the future with our remaining bathroom remodel and any other project we have. Truly a 5 star experience!"See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

To hire the best contractor, you need to spend some time comparing pros in your area. Search online for top-rated basement refinishers and remodelers, and check out the customer reviews and photos on their profiles. Here are some questions to ask yourself as you’re browsing their profiles:

  • How responsive and communicative are they?
  • Did they finish preview basement remodeling projects by the deadline?
  • Do they have enough experience finishing basements?
  • Do the contractors offer fair pricing?
  • How is their craftsmanship?

License requirements for contractors vary by state, so check to see if your contractor needs to be licensed before you hire. You should always hire a contractor who has the proper credentials.

Before you hire a contractor, however, get written estimates. Contact at least three to five basement refinishers to receive price quotes and ask questions. Hire the contractor you feel has the most experience, great craftsmanship and fair pricing.

The average cost to finish a basement is $8,448. Factors that affect this cost include whether you need to install a bathroom (and hence plumbing), as well as how much electrical work needs to be done. The square footage of the basement also correlates with price, with more expensive flooring like hardwood or tile costing more. The same goes for all materials.

Talk to top-rated basement refinishers in your neighborhood to find out how much you can expect to pay. And read the cost guide for basement finishing to learn more about the cost factors.

Choosing the best floor for a basement begins with knowing what not to install. Anything that absorbs moisture like hardwood and laminate flooring are typically not the best choices. The most moisture-resistant choice is an epoxy floor, which effectively forms a moisture seal. Other options include ceramic tile, vinyl or rubber flooring.

Finishing your basement starts with planning. It’s important to have carefully designed plans, as well as permits from your local government. You should also find a general contractor or basement refinisher to help you with the planning and construction process.

The first step in building is usually the framing and insulation, followed by routing electrical wire and wiring your receptacles and outlets. This is followed by plumbing. Once plumbing is complete, the next step is usually hanging drywall and mudding, taping and sanding it. After this comes adding doors and trim, and then flooring.

Finishing a basement could be worth the cost if you plan to use the space. If you’re planning on selling your home in the future, note that several past studies and reports found that there is some return on investment for basement remodels. However, how much you recoup will depend on your particular home and real estate market. It’s important to have realistic expectations for the value that a finished basement will add to your home. To find out if you should finish, remodel or refinish your basement, talk to a real estate expert and basement refinishers near you.

There are several great options for waterproof basement flooring. For example, epoxy floors are waterproof but are thicker and sturdier than paint. Make sure the concrete substrate has been prepared for application.

Tile is a designer’s dream, giving you a moisture-resistant surface that’s infinitely customizable. Rubber sheets or tiles are also good waterproof options, particularly for playrooms, workout areas or laundry rooms.

Vinyl tiles and planks imitate wood or other materials very convincingly, provide moisture resistance and last a long time. And sheet vinyl is affordable and a great waterproofing solution for those in need of quick fixes.
