All communications from APG were immediate, clear and professional -- this was very reassuring. The security guard assigned to man the door for our private party came on time, and was very nice.

I retained WIS to conduct a delicate social media investigation. I had an immediate response, a tailored outcome that included a thorough analysis. All the contact I had was directly with the principal, and he was fantastic at explaining the process and alerting me to the realistic outcomes that I could expect to receive. I consequently had realistic expectations - and before I actually paid for anything - about what might be possible. I did not ultiamtely find everything I wanted but it was very clear indeed that WIS went well beyond the extra mile to help me, left no stone unturned in researching the issue and looking for an answer. As an example of going beyond the extra mile, WIS kept on the matter after sending me the report that I had paid for and voluntarily provided me with an update report that did contain additional useful information. Who else would stay on the case like that? I doubt it is industry practice, but it is the way WIS actually did things for me. I found WIS very polite, very responsive, very quick, very thorough and totally objective. I would have no hesitation in recommending WIS, and I personally will not waste a second looking elsewhere if I ever needed work of the sort WIS does to be done for me. It was an excellent experience, and good value for money as well.

Becky is the most efficient, professional and tenacious private investigator I have worked with-she gets the job done and done well. My non profit works on the issues of human trafficking and missing persins. She is the first investigator I call everytime. Her services have helped us directly in the rescue and safety of many victims.

I hired Chameleon to conduct surveillance on a previous employee that I suspected is not injured at all. I am extremely happy with the results that saved me a lot of headaches and saved money to the insurance company.

UNIT 07 was very refreshing to work with...I needed help in the form of bodyguards and I needed my former business partner investigated for fraud against myself and my new business partner. UNIT 07 was very methodical with the way every aspect of my case was handled, I only wished I could have been more involved but they got the job done and I think I was to emotional to get to close anyways. Thanks again. Robert E. C.

We are very impressed with Tracy's speed and enthusiasm to zero in to my issues of the Macaw parrot that a con man duped us on.

Mark took his time to do a thorough investigation of my situation. He was able to provide concrete evidence to further my goals and help bring closure to a situation that was nebulous at best before he got involved. I didn't get the run around. I did get factual and timely explanations along with any proof that he found which helped me make very necessary decisions.

The Law Office of Brian R. Johnston is focused on helping Creditors get paid. I am dedicated to the collection of debts and the enforcement of judgments. Most Attorneys work on your case before and during your trial, but once the case is over they have no interest in helping you collect your judgment. I step in after you've won your case and I recover your money from the debtor. I am also a Licensed Private Investigator. I find assets of the debtor and take them to satisfy your judgment. Contact me when you need both a Lawyer and a Private Investigator to enforce a judgment. The Law Office of Brian R. Johnston has the experience to get you paid.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a private investigator do?

First and foremost, good private investigators follow laws. Unlike on TV, they don’t break in windows or hack into hospital computer systems to get you intel. When you hire a private investigator, you’re hiring a professional to gather facts and find information for you. Although they can’t obtain certain information (such as health records), they do have access to information that most civilians do not. Often private investigators are hired to perform surveillance or background checks or investigate cases such as adultery, child custody, missing persons, hidden assets, or debugging, and theft or other crimes.

Private investigators can be hired to interview people and provide that information to the client, perform photo or video surveillance, monitor activity at a location where you suspect criminal activities or questionable behavior, track a person’s movements, find missing people, do deep-dive background checks, and more. Private investigation can be helpful if you’re trying to get a court order but need evidence. Private investigators can also help find birth parents. Nationally, the average price range for private investigation is $70-$210 per hour.

What does a private investigator cost?

Private investigation isn’t just for blockbuster action movies. Hiring a private investigator can help in all kinds of situations ranging from finding a birth parent to improving personal security. Nationally, the average price range for private investigation is $70-$210, although pricing often hovers between $40 and $100 depending on the complexity of the services you need. Where you live in the country will affect your costs for private investigation; larger cities have higher business overhead and a higher cost of living, which in turn means higher service rates. The complexity of your case can also affect cost. A basic background check may have a flat rate, while hiring a private investigator to help with your child custody case may require more legwork and research, and therefore cost more. Some private investigators work on retainer. A retainer is essentially a nonrefundable deposit you pay to the professional — meaning you have retained their services — who then works against that amount. Here are some examples of average private investigation costs:

  • Hourly rate: $60-$70; costs can vary based on current fuel prices.
  • Flat rate: $100 for comprehensive background investigation services.
  • Retainer: $1,500 minimum retainer required by some pros before starting work.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
