My experience with Abraham was a pleasure. He was prompt, responsible, and above all else, his quote was affordable and he adhered to the price quoted. No time windows, no mess, no uncertainty. Thanks, Abraham! You're the best in the west!

I was very pleased with the work Stephen and his team had done for my house. There were some broken roof tiles, and water was leaking in the garage. Stephen explained replacing the tiles would not prevent from water leaking again, because he found there were thick layers of debris from the pine tree. Without cleaning the valleys, the water will not run down the roof. Also, some windows needed to be sealed correctly. Bottom line, I feel he was really looking out for me to make sure the repair was not temporary. His price was very reasonable. He ended up doing a lot more work such as trimming the tree, pressured washing the roof, painting one corner of the wall near the window. Plus, he did not charge me more than he originally quoted. The other quotes I obtained from other contractors for just replacing the broken tiles were not much less. I highly recommend Mr. Fixit. I will hire him again for future repair/maintenance in a heartbeat.

I have looked for over three years to find someone to replace the window my dog chewed out. It was the old beach slat glass kind and I wanted to get a regular window, It needed new inside wood, trim, and sealed as the dog really chewed it out/up. I guess the job was just to small for anyone I had come look at it as they never called me back. Master ACR Glass not only came out when they said they would, but presented me with a quote that day and came back to do the work. They did an awesome job. Now I want to replace the other two windows. They were polite and cleaned up after the job was complete. All I can say is that you can trust this company! I have them in my phone now! Bindy

He worked hard and completed the job successfully. If I have the opportunity to hire him again, I would. Highly recommended.

Hector is a gentleman. I needed someone to upgrade my elderly parents' faucet with one that I had already purchased, and I was only going to be in town for a day. Hector was able to meet me at my parents' home during my very small availability window. Unfortunately, upon arrival, we discovered that we were missing a part necessary for the replacement. Hector then accompanied us to Lowes in hopes of getting the part locally and when that was not successful, offered to come back after I had ordered the part online and replace it then. I had originally preferred to get the faucet replaced during my visit, because I would feel more comfortable overseeing the project without my parents' needing to involve themselves or their time. However, Hector was so kind and gracious despite the missing part during our first visit that I knew the replacement would go seamlessly even without my presence later, and that is exactly what happened. I will be using Hector again very soon for more projects around my parents' home, especially knowing that I can arrange for work to be done without me having to physically be there. Thank you Hector!

Gus replaced 3 window screens and rescreened a slider. He cleaned up the frames. He releveled the slider and hammered out a bit of a bend in the same. Gus gave me a very reasonable quote and was true to the quote. He was friendly and clean. The job took him just under an hour. I can honestly say that EVERYTHING about this project went right. There were no problems at all. I will absolutely recommend Creative Hands, Gus and for that mmatter Thumbtack to others.

I hired Tim to install exterior window shutters after my original shutters were damaged in the rain. Tim was quick to respond to all messages and the project was scheduled that same week. Tim showed up at the scheduled time and completed the project in a timely manner. My new window shutters turned out great and I would hire Tim in the future for my handyman projects.

I have office business windows that front a major street that I lease. Some jerk shot a steel ball into the window and broke the outside of the double pane. B and B worked with me and the Insurance company to get the correct color window and inside tint. Job well done and at a very reasonable price. They even cleaned up behind the install. I would recommend this company for your window needs. Dr. Dave

Eric and his crew were awesome. Got the windows ordered and in quick, at a reasonable price. I even had a custom window that they graciously took back because it wasn't what I'd imagined it would look like. I only did 4 windows but now i can't wait to get the rest of them done because the new ones look so great!

Contacted George with a list of projects I had in mind, but needed a price to see how much I could get done and what the costs would be. George came over to give me a quote and a breakdown of costs of each project and payment schedule, which I appreciated. We went ahead with the work. One of the bigger projects we had George and his team do was to knock down our existing patio and concrete and put up a new one. Old patio was 15' x 20' we did a new 15' x 40' patio. Very happy with the quality of work and the patio itself. Other projects include removing bulkhead and putting up new drywall, installing can lights, new roof, and putting up new doors. I was most impressed by two things - 1) the open communication between us, and 2) the professionalism and politeness from George and his workers. Even little hiccups were properly communicated and worked out. I will definitely be working with them again.

Steve responded quickly to my inquiry regarding putting in a wall mounted dog door. He arrived on the designated day and time; even arriving a few minutes early. He professionally went to work installing my very expensive “Hale” dog door. He protected my kitchen nook floor and outside area where work was to done. His attention to detail and cleanup was great. The dog door needed to be placed under a window, and he was able, with confidence, adjust electrical wires in order to accommodate the door. He is very friendly and his price for this project was very reasonable. I will definitely use him again for other projects that I need done. I am very happy with his work. My photo of this door came out horizontal, instead of vertical, but hopefully it shows how well Steve installed my double wall Hale dog door.

Wesley arrived on time, looked at my long list of" to dos" and their problems, smiiled and began on the hardest: screening in my 4th floor balcony to keep the birds off. He added the upper closet rod I desperately need and hung a stain glass piece in the window. He continued for 6 hours uninterrupted, until all the art work was hung and the leaf was reinstalled on an antique table. He was knowledgeable, a problem solver who pleasantly explained what he was doing. A wonderful job! I will certainly call him again and recommend his services to my family and friends.

Hector Pena did a great job at installing the windows. What I really liked though is how conscious he was about cleaning up after the installation. He was on time, professional, answered all my questions, and was fairly priced. I would recommend him.

I was selling my house and called Best Professional Roofing. Fausto came to inspect my house. He was courteous and respectful. He was honest and said I did not have any roofing issues but there were some parts that needed to be treated because of termites. I was thankful for his professional opinion. To top it all,he did not even charge me for the inspection. Highly recommend!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
