I have just completed my personalized training course with Canine Companions as of May 31st and the entire experience was enlightening and delightful. My furry friend is a 3 year old male blue nose Pit Bull terrier and I needed a knowledgeable professional to teach me how to best train and care for my friend. Kym not only did that but so much more. I understand dog hierarchy and the leader/follower tendencies of the pack mentality so much more thoroughly now. She not only taught me what works with dogs and how to keep their respect and obedience but WHY it works as well. I didn't have to overcome any severe issues with my Pittie, as he has a great general disposition as it is. What we worked on was asserting my role as a leader to him and how to make my boy know that I was in charge and that he could trust in me and follow my direction all in a safe, positive, learning environment. You never have to lift a hand to your dog if you know how to properly address the issues you have with them! After three sessions with Kym I am now to able to walk him on the leash with him at my side and no longer pulling and dragging along to the next spot for him to sniff or mark, I AM IN CONTROL, and he happily rambles on along side me enjoying the walk and accepting my direction without challenging it. Among that huge step in my relationship with him we learned how to properly reinforce the basic commands with a dog that I feel personally are oft overlooked as to how critical they are to a dogs growth and the relationship you share with them. I know how to execute these commands in a way to will not confuse my pup or contradict other commands I have given thus confusing the poor guy. Kym not only helped me fix his bad habits, but my own bad habits as well. I thank her dearly for that. Kym was on time with our meetings, always had treats on hand to reinforce his training, and was always more than happy to teach helpful tips and advice on proper care and health topics concerning our four legged friends. I can proudly show off my friendly and obedient Pit Bull Terrier thanks to Kym and her vast amount of knowledge and care she has for these creatures. It was the very best time and money I have spent with my dog and I absolutely believe that EVERY dog owner should experience instruction such as hers, everyone would benefit from responsible owners and safe healthy and happy pets!

Val definitely knows how to deal with aggressive dogs! She showed me lots of techniques and was able to explain to me how/why the different approaches work. I know my dog's issue won't be solved in one session- but I am excited to learn from Val so that I can help to make my dog a happy, confident, trained dog!

Melinda is all we could ever ask for in a pet sitter and more! Not only is she very easy to communicate with but she treats our dogs like they are her own. We never have to worry about anything when we travel. Melinda moves right in when we need to head out and takes care of not only our dogs, but she also gets our mail, waters our plants and makes sure our property remains secure while we are gone. She is extra cautious of the food allergies that exist in our house as well. Whether our travel takes us to the other side of the world, the other side of the country, or just a couple hours away we know we can trust Melinda has things covered. The pictures and videos we receive from Melinda while we travel are an added plus, especially for a mom like me that has trouble leaving her “babies”. You also can’t beat coming home to a clean house and happy pets! Our two huskies can get a bit upset when they know we are leaving, but when Melinda comes over they are totally fine with us leaving. If she can handle our two crazy huskies I am sure she can handle anything!

At close to the last minute over the Thanksgiving holidays, Ginny accepted the job to feed and care for my cat for two days at my home in Tustin. She followed up promptly and left me an email that all was going well. She fed my cat,, cleaned the litter box, and spent time in my home with my pet. My cat was very calm and seemed happy when I returned home and I feel 100% satisfied that Ginny did an excellent job. I will use her services another time.

Amazing! David was amazing with my dog. I had a dog who had several issues on top of not having any obedience. We tried other trainers before him and they couldn't help him. We finally found David and he did a wonderful job. He got our dog to stop lunging, barking, tearing up our things, helped us build a bond, and taught him obedience commands. I am very grateful for everything he's done.

I am so thankful to have found Maddi and Glitterati Pet Spa. Our dog is almost 15 years old and the last visit to his previous groomer had declared he was unable to groom him. I told Maddi of this and she stepped up to the plate and hit a home run with our beloved dog. Thank you Thumbtack once again for connecting me with a professional! I highly recommend Glitterati Pet Spa!

At the last minute I required a sitter for my special needs senior dog Xena. Alicia came over and immediately I knew we had found the right fit. Xena requires lots of potty breaks with the use of a sling which can often scare people and Alicia was happy to take on the challenge. I would recommend her to anyone!

Within one week using her training and tips any family member can pull our dogs food away with out getting biten or even a growl. Our German Shepard will now wait patiently in a calm "sit" position till we put his food back for him. Looking forward to more training!

Carissa was my trainer and she is the absolute best! She was super professional and friendly which I really appreciated. She was able to really train my dog Zuke when I was the most frustrated with his progress. He has had a complete turn around since Carissa has been working with him and I am truly grateful to her for it. She took the time to give me tips and tricks on how to handle him on the leash, his former biting problem and helped with his whining and barking. My next dog I will definitely be calling her directly I can't imagine anyone else helping me or working with my pups!!!

We selected Brian because he has a Bachelors degree in Canine Behaviors & we didn't want training for our dogs but behavior modification. We are so happy with Brian's knowledge and ability to work with our dogs. He leads by example and will allow us to watch him work with our dogs before he has us work with them. His reminders and training tips are valuable. After only 2 sessions, our dogs behavior has already improved tremendously.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a dog walker do?

We all know our dogs love going on long, adventure-filled walks, but jobs and family and commuting can make it difficult to give them the leash time they deserve. You can hire a professional dog walker to make sure your furry friend gets adequate exercise and outdoor time each day. A professional dog walker may be an individual contractor or work for a dedicated dog-walking company. In either case, you want to make sure the pro has the appropriate insurance in case of an emergency. Some people opt to give the dog walker a key to their house; others to have them pick up the dog from the yard. Dog walking can happen as often as multiple times per day, or just a few times a month as needed. Here are some questions to ask when you are interviewing a new dog walker:

  • Will you or someone else be walking my dog?
  • Do you have a backup plan if you can’t make it for a scheduled walk?
  • Will you walk my dog by itself, or do you walk several dogs at once?
  • What are your different walk routes?
  • When will you pick up and drop off?
  • How will we communicate?
  • Do I have to commit to a schedule or are you flexible?
  • What’s your cancellation policy?
  • What’s your response plan if my dog gets injured or becomes sick?
  • How and how often do I pay you?
  • Do you offer package pricing if I buy multiple dog walks up front?

What is included in a dog grooming?

Dog grooming is so much more than giving your dog a bath. Dog grooming is a broad term that covers all aspects of canine cleanliness and hygiene. The services included in dog grooming will vary based on your needs and what you choose to pay. Unless they are rolling in cowpies or playing in mud puddles, most dogs are okay getting a shampoo bath only as needed. You’ll know when they need it if they smell bad or are bringing dirt into the house. Some dogs, like shepherds and shih tzus, have thick coats that can get matted and tangled without regular care. Pro dog groomers can deftly blow dry a dog’s hair after a bath so that it is shiny and smooth. Dog grooming can include brushing that detangles dog hair and also thins the undercoat to minimize shedding.

Dog grooming also includes hygiene services such as toothbrushing and ear cleaning. Clean teeth are important to the health of your dog, and the pros have the patience and proper technique to get it done. Regular dog grooming can stave off tear stains, those reddish stains below your dog’s eyes. Anal gland expression is something not many people want to do on their own, even if they love their dog. A dog groomer can safely and efficiently release any blocked anal gland fluid. Other dog grooming services include nail trimming and clipping. Nationally, dog grooming prices range from $60 to $80. Most dog groomers offer discounts to customers who purchase monthly packages or bundle multiple grooming services at one time.

What is a dog groomer?

A dog groomer is a service professional who provides dog grooming and basic hygiene care for your dog. Dog groomers are typically animal lovers who are competent and comfortable working with a wide range of dog breeds and temperaments. Dog groomers are knowledgeable about the care needs for different kinds of dog coats. A poodle will have different haircut needs than a shih tzu, for example, so it pays to have a trained pro provide the proper cut. Good dog groomers know how to safely clean your dog’s teeth, bathe your dog, and cut their nails without going too short. They understand how to trim the hair from around your dog’s face, express anal glands, and clean your dog’s ears. Many people who choose dog grooming as a profession also pursue other dog services such as attending veterinary school, running a doggy day care center, working as a professional dog walker, and more.

What is a dog groomer?

Keep your family dogs happy, healthy and clean with regular dog grooming. A dog groomer is a business owner or employee of a dog grooming business who specializes in dog hygiene and grooming. To find a reputable dog groomer, research reviews, ask for references and confirm that the groomer has good standing in the dog grooming community.

A dog groomer should be comfortable and competent working with dogs of all breeds and temperaments. Typically a groomer will have trained with other groomers and taken educational courses to keep abreast of the latest safety information and techniques. There are brick-and-mortar dog grooming businesses, as well as mobile dog groomers who bring all their equipment and provide their services at your home or location. In some cases, brick-and-mortar businesses will also pick up and return your dog for an additional fee.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.
