Charlie was able to come out last minute to take care of several issues in my renovated home. He was prompt and professional and the work is top notch. I am going to have him come back out to take care of some additional new sink and toilet installations very soon. Highly recommend.

I did not know that the work would be this complicated, but Marlon had to remove an old and cracked bathroom sink to replace rusted out and leaking parts. He did his work in an expert and careful way in less than the 2 hours initially predicted. He is friendly, honest and fair. I highly recommend him.

Dave came over (on time) to do a handful of odd jobs that we needed from installing bathroom mirrors, to fixtures. We also needed closet doors installed and he had to get creative to get them on, given challenges with the size and fit. He was extremely friendly, worked hard the entire time and was very fair and reasonable. We'll have him back again soon for more work for sure.

The team was very professional and did an incredible job installing a chandelier where we had a can light in a tall stairwell, replaced scones and rewired some switches. We've always have been happy with the work and professionalism and have used them for all our electrical needs. Thanks for making our home look amazing!

We were more than pleased with the work Keith did for us. He arrived exactly when he was scheduled and did an excellent job replacing our three bathroom faucets as well as doing an adjustment on the kitchen faucet. They work great and he cleaned up the area and finished in a timely manner. Would definitely recommend and will be calling him again for other jobs as needed.

We hired John to come out and fix a few outlets that stopped working in our kitchen, he was able to fix them within 5 minutes and offered up other services to fill in the hour that we had hired him for. He went to Ace to buy supplies and was also able to fix our sink in the bathroom! John was very friendly and glad to help, would absolutely recommend! We'll be keeping his contact information for future projects!

I contacted Marc to install a new bathroom exhaust fan. He was able to do it within a day. The fan I purchased was too large, but he offered to make the adjustments and added on a small additional charge. His work was quite neat and he finished in a timely manner. He left the area very clean, and his price was very fair. I had contacted two other contractors who would have charged double the price. I would definitely recommend him.

I called 2 other glass company's in which 1 company didnt show up and the other 1 showed up 30 minutes late. I called Colorado Custom Glass and spoke with Leonard, He was very Knowledgable and anwsered all my questions. Leonard gave me a quote over the phone. I liked the price so I setup an appointment for him to come out and get the exact measurements. Leonard showed up 15 minutes early and was a very very nice guy. He honered the quote he gave me over the phone and had mentioned it would take 5-7 days to get the glass and install it. To my suprise Leonard called me in 4 days and installed the same day. I have refered Colorado Custom Glass to 3 of my friends and all have nothing but nice things to say. I will be using Colorado Custom Glass for another bathroom I am having done.

Matt is an excellent handyman who was capable of doing everything I needed to get my house ready to sell. While homebuying/selling can be very stressful, Matt was certainly a very bright spot in the work that he did for me. His tasks included replacing the caulking in the bathrooms/kitchen, replacing door trim, patching and painting over some dings in the walls, and installing privacy film on several windows. There were probably a couple more things that I missed. Matt showed up every day at the time we agreed, and ensured a very high standard of quality with his work. My house was on the market for just 36 hours before we received an offer at $5k over asking, and I credit Matt's work with helping to make that possible. I would have him back any time to do more work on my new home.

John removed an old vanity, installed a new one, and repaired the tile where the old vanity was. John showed up on time and even suggested adding a back splash since the new vanity didn't have one. He worked fast and clean and the vanity looks great. I will hiring John again for sure.

Clint was amazing! We had a pretty time-consuming job (filling in loft holes in a bedroom/bathroom wall: involving sheetrock, 2x4's, putty, the works) and he had to come over three trips to get the work completed. He's incredibly responsive, punctual, and flexible, and he ensures his work is satisfactory and covers all bases. Would not hesitate to hire him again.

Brent was recommended by a friend. He is amazing at his job. There is nothing he can't do. He tiled our bathroom, fixed and patched our drywall and put up new privacy fencing in our back yard. We are so pleased with his workmanship and pricing. From now own he will be the man for any future work needing done.

Tyler has done many projects at my house (installed laminate flooring throughout, tile in the bathrooms, interior painting, crown moulding, bathroom vanity and mirror installation, new ceiling fans and light fixtures, hot water heater replacement, kitchen faucet, and new garage door opener). He also helped my dad with many of his projects and now he can’t stop gushing over him. Tyler is very nice, professional, reasonably priced, and works fast! I would recommend him for any of your projects around the house.

I’ve hired Matt at Handy Dollar for several jobs. He is a really nice guy that is very honest and hardworking. I felt totally comfortable with him in my home. He remodeled my bathroom and I’m still in love with how beautiful it is! He’s also done smaller jobs around the house like hanging/taking down my Christmas lights, installing toilets, wallpapering and installing lighting fixtures for me. He’s also done jobs for friends and family of mine and we all feel like we found a gem!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
