Forest & team were awesome. Literally one of the top 3 experiences I've had with hiring a trade in Denver. Forest came over within a couple of days to get me a quote, explain the job and walk me through the process. He checked with Jeffco on building specs and communicated the needed changes and cost effects. He then fit me in the schedule earlier than expected. Told me job was 3 days - team finished in 3 days. Cleaned up and took some extra with them. These guys are legit - highly recommend.

It isn't easy trying to choose which construction or roofing company to use when you suddenly find yourself in that 'hurry up or else' situation of needing to replace the roof NOW. After receiving several estimates - and dealing with the 'maybe I can get to it next week' excuses - one company stood out among the rest - Mountaintop Construction. Steve Petersen came to my home in Bellvue, Colorado, within 24-48 hours, which was over 100 miles from his location. He explained to me in simple terms why the shingles looked the way they did, which actually helped save me a ton of money after advising me to have the insurance company come take a look. The job was completed by a friendly crew - and by Steve himself - within a weeks' time. The county came out for the final inspection and the roof passed with no problems. The shingles look beautiful! I would recommend this company and Steve Petersen's crew without hesitation.

Nick has really done an outstanding job for me so far. I've been using his services on a multi-phase, complete remodel of a 3700 square foot ranch home in Lakewood. He is very easy to work with, is highly responsive in turning around drawings and renderings, and brings great design ideas to the table. Nick's been a great find. Very pleased.

I can't say enough good things about F9! I've worked with Lance and the F9 team on 14 home remodels over the last 6 years. They are not only very talented designers but they bring a level of professionalism that is rare in this business. Their ability to successfully take on a variety of projects, from remodels to modern homes to health-care facilities is a testament their team. Lance & Alex bring a great energy to every project they tackle and they're fun to work with! I'm always confident I'm in great hands at every stage of design & build. I'm looking forward to working with them more in the years to come!

I so enjoyed working with Israel and his crew. They drywalled, primed and textured an entire house I'm building. In order to stick to my schedule, Israel's crew worked two weekends in a row, 10 to 12 hours a day. Their work was fantastic - they went the extra mile to correct some framing mistakes. My painter came in to inspect and gave the job 5 stars. Israel is professional, competitively priced and a pleasure to work with. We will definitely work together on future projects!

Professional. Knowledgeable. I am a big value kind of guy so getting great work at a great price point and also in a timely manner was what lead to an excellent experience. Our whole home remodel also included 2 baths, our kitchen and our living room. I would highly recommend Norton Building and Remodel.

John was VERY processional, offered an explained and reasonable quote, he responded immediately and answered any question, and followed up when he said he would. He was also clear on how many boarder tiles were needed, that home depot would take back what wouldn't be used and was exact on what type grout. In addition, we still got to pick the tile and grout. I had a question on where a row would end and how it would look behind/next to the fridge. He said he could do a boarded rather than them ending behind, counted the boarded tiles to confirm we'd have enough. I liked the idea so he removed a few tiles he'd placed so there were no small pieces and i could tell how meticulous he was and how good it would look. I was impressed that he would take down completed work and redo, to make me happy and have his work look the best. We had worked with another contractor on our kitchen remodel and due to unresponsiveness and lack of attention, choose to have John do the back splash. When he was done, the work was impeccable and done in half the time. We wished we'd used him for the whole project!!! I will use John for future projects and recommend him to others.

We needed a new roof and stucco on our home. After looking at some of his previous work we went with Brian and Finish Line Construction. Brian was professional, got the work done ahead of schedule and went the extra mile with some detail work. We would hire him again and be happy to refer him to others.

Excellent job, on time, on budget. We gave him some general ideas for design and he got creative! Although not largest house in subdivision I believe it will be most unique and coolest (bias noted). We showed him samples of the sort of residence we wanted and he was accurate in including the ambiance, materials and overall feel of proposed home in the plans. This is our first time building a custom home and he was very patient! He told us what was a good idea and was direct when he thought our design feature wasn't reasonable. Michael has a strong understanding of building processes, modern materials and methods. He knows many professionals locally and had no problem locating correct engineer, surveyor, etc. Great job!

Jessica was an absolute pleasure to work with. I didn't know I could see something like this come to life before my eyes! Her design style is forward thinking and she pays special attention to the details that a lot of designers might skim over. The 3D model she created of my space was so cool and really helped me visualize what the end result would look like. The overall design process was fun, easy, and the results were outstanding. I never dreamed my home could look this good! Hire archiCRAVE! You won't be sorry.

Working with BMS was a great experience. I chose them to design my home remodel. Their attention to detail, knowledge of the design-construction process, and willingness to assist me as a general contractor made the process efficient and seamless. From start to finish they was proactive and went above and beyond in dealing with Planning and Zoning, and even with building inspections. I highly recommend BMS if your looking for a professional, result-driven experience. John Scanlon Cornerstone Development

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
