My son Shane wanted to take heavy metal guitar lessons, and my friend recommended Mike. I never wanted to pressure Shane to stay with lessons, but I didn't need to; not only did he learn songs from the rock bands he loved, but he ended up falling in love with jazz. Mike was always so friendly and knowledgeable, and it was nice to hear Shane playing heavy metal one day and jazz the next. Michelle B.

Kevin, You ROCK!! We had so much fun listening to your music the other evening at the birthday party bash. We especially enjoyed when you played oldies by the great artists of the 60's and 70's. The Beatles are my favorite group and you played their songs to a tee....Their "Birthday" song was so appropriate. You're quite the entertainer!! Thanks for a wonderful time. Everyone had a blast because of the joy your music brings. I can tell you really love playing music because you kept the audience wanting more. You're awesome and fun!! We're amazed that you can play so many different music types. Will you please play at my wife's birthday party next month? We would recommend you to anyone. We'll be watching for your public gigs and will try to attend all of them! Your very ADMIRING FANS.....Mike and Genie

Robin was the perfect partner for our party. The way he works makes it feel like it't "we" not us and him. It really felt like he was all in to ensure things worked out. Very responsive and thoughtful, which created a high degree of trust that proved to be legitimate. He managed sound for a party in a park where determining the power source was challenging and when the weather was very up in the air, but he did everything he could to make sure all went well. And it did, all at a very affordable price. Couldn't recommend him more.

Catherine arrived ahead of schedule and ready to perform holiday piano music for our employee party of more than 250 people. She made our old upright piano sound like a magnificent baby grand. She played for two hours straight with no duplication of music. Lots of great compliments from the crowd. We would gladly hire her again!

It feels wonderful showing up knowing I’ll get top notch treatment and experienced instruction. If you’re looking for a place for instruction, to record, band practice etc. THIS IS THE PLACE TO DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wasted time and money at Guitar Center! Never again! Scott and his group showed up early to set up for sound check and were really fun to work with. When we had some last minute hiccups at our event during set up, they were flexible and laid back while we figured them out. Once they began playing, our guests kept commenting at what great music we had chosen and how great the band was. Without Scott and his group, our party would not have been as fun or engaging for our guests. I HIGHLY recommend hiring him for any event, big or small. We definitely will be for our next party.

Kevin was a great private lesson teacher for my 8th grade percussionist! He was very flexible and accommodating with scheduling, and the wise instruction he provided allowed my son to get the highest rating possible at Solo and Ensemble, win a distinguished scholarship award at the end of the school year from his band, and earn a coveted position in the high school drumline as only a freshman. Kevin provided insightful coaching which expanded my son's repertoire of instruments and technique.

All night long during my wedding reception, the praise was relentless: "Where the hell did you find this band? They are incredible!" The Funky-Bots absolutely slay! I'm a musician myself, so it was really important to me to find a band that was tight and fun and played music with a real groove that will make people dance at my wedding. I sampled dozens of bands and got tons of quotes, but the clip Stephen sent me of his bandmates playing stuck out immediately. This isn't some corny neighborhood bar band with a rigid list of songs to choose from. The Bots are impeccably trained professionals, and everyone at my wedding could sense they were different. From the first meeting with Stephen, I felt at ease with his professionalism and confidence. He and his band never balked at a request, and were willing to try out anything, and everything they tried succeeded. Paige, the singer, has unbelievable poise and soul in her voice; she is a rare talent that you aren't going to find in most wedding bands. I could tell the band spent a lot of time practicing our songs, and they had fun with the arrangements. That energy and looseness carried over to the crowd; people can sense when the band is having fun, and it just makes the whole show exponentially better. The Bots came on time, were prompt with setup and flexible with the schedule, and were all around kind and gracious people. My only regret is that they couldn't play longer. I will recommend them to everyone I know till the day I kick the bucket. Thanks so much, y'all!!!

Andy and Joy were both awesome to work with. Provided spot on professional input during set up and accommodated EVERY request we made to make our gathering a huge success. There was a lot to talk about after the party...people talked about the music. Hope to work with and see these guys in our future.

Miss Lyza was one of the best person I have every hired. She did so well with all of the kids and keep them entertained. She made Alaya have a good time and even gave her a crown which she wore for her party and all of next day. She went out of her way to help with Guy Diamond phone call because that was who Alaya really wanted at her party. I would recommend her for anyone to use. Such a joy to work with.

Ira performed at my partner’s 40th birthday party not too long ago. Ira sang, played the keyboard, and facilitated the roasting and toasting of the birthday boy. Ira was hilarious and really got everyone involved. Ira MADE the party! I was extremely impressed with his ability to improvise and connect with the audience during his performance. I would highly recommend seeing Ira perform; your belly will likely hurt afterwards from laughing so hard :) I've seen Ira perform on several other occasions as well, and every time I'm touched by how passionate he is for his craft, and I'm always inspired by his thought-provoking (and often silly) songs, poems, and stories. Ira was born to entertain and he is truly one of a kind!

I have been following this group for over 6 years. They are so talented instrumentally and vocally and their harmonies are spot on. They have played at our outdoor party for the past 2 years and are scheduled again this year. I promise you will be impressed.....and they are also great guys!!!!

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

        • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
        • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
        • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
