About Pea in the Pod Fitness

Pea in the Pod Fitness is a mobile, women-only personal training business. We are located in Greater Indianapolis. We come to you! We service Carmel, Nora, Broad Ripple, and the downtown areas.

Abby Kurtz is the owner and lead personal trainer with Pea in The Pod Fitness. She has been in the fitness industry since 2003. She has a B.S. in kinesiology from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She has worked in a variety of settings including gyms, hospitals, and physical therapy offices. All of these experiences have led her to a greater knowledge of body mechanics and injury rehabilitation.

What really sets Abby apart from other trainers is her passion and concern for her clients. Her client's goals are her goals. She challenges her clients to reach higher and won't allow them to settle, while at the same time she has a great ability to connect with each individual client and meet them where they are.

Additionally, Abby finds it is extremely fulfilling to work with women who have unique fitness needs, such as prenatal and postnatal women, and mothers. She loves using exercise to help them make it through pregnancy and beyond. Abby finds it rewarding to be a small part of the whole process of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. She especially enjoys releasing women from the "mommy-guilt" associated with taking time for themselves and strives to help women trouble-shoot and create flexible fitness plans that meet the unique and often unpredictable demands of motherhood.

Aside from enjoying what she does, Abby has stayed up-to-date on the latest information by taking continuing education courses on prenatal and postpartum exercise and by following the guidelines given by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Look for credentials and experience. You get what you pay for.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Always be honest with your trainer. Your trainer needs to know what you like and don't like. They also need feedback in regard to what is working for you and what isn't working for you.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. I bring heart and passion to every person I touch. I want my clients not just to exercise but to come into the fullness of who they are, to not just live but to come alive.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. Women are in a powerful position to be catalysts for health change in their families. I love to activate that within them so that they pursue greater health for themselves and their family.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. Do I need my own equipment? Absolutely not! We come fully stocked and bring everything needed.

Q. Do you have a favorite story from your work?

A. It's a very proud moment for me when my prenatal clients are able to achieve a goal of natural childbirth. In combination with other practitioners, staying strong during pregnancy can be a huge predictor of delivery outcomes.

Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?

A. It's a lot more than just showing a few exercises. I take great pride in staying up to date on exercise physiology, the latest advances in exercise technology, and the psychology of motivation. I go the extra mile with my clients because health is the basis for our lives. I want my clients to strive for vitality. I want them not just to live but to be alive!

Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?

A. I've always been an encourager. It's at the core of who I am. In addition, I have always loved to be physically active. It was a very natural progression of things for me to choose personal training. In a way, I think it chose me.

Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?

A. Absolutely! I'm constantly reading. The body is a complex machine and we're always acquiring new information. It's incredibly important for me to stay up-to-date with the latest in prenatal and postnatal and women's fitness.

Q. What is your greatest strength?

A. I see the great potential in all clients and strive to bring it forth!
