Tim came in and did a full replacement of the AC and heating system of my house. He replied to my request through Thumbtack extremely promptly and came in to scope the project out right away. Did the full replacement in less than 6 hours. Price for parts and labor were more than fair and the units were well installed. Tim has been professional, considerate and efficient the entire time. Highly recommend.

The two man team was very professional and thorough. They completed a deep clean and service on the air conditioner and replaced the capacitor. We immediately noticed an improvement on the AC output and overall comfort level in the house. They also completed a diagnostic of the existing heating and cooling systems, giving us an idea of their expected life span and what we can do to extend their use.

I asked Dr. HVAC to clean and sanitize my vents, service my furnace and change my thermostat to digital. I just purchased my home but never had any idea the vents were in a mess. Jesus took pictures showing the before and after shots of the vents. From what I saw in those pics...Jesus did a great job. I received my invoice, receipt and certification the same day...yes, I would recommend Dr. HVAC and I will be retaining him as my HVAC guy!!!

Eric and his crew were extremely thorough, professional and explained every step of the process. The previous company that did work on my furnace made an absolute mess, Eric's crew fixed the preexisting problems and now my heating and cooling systems work great! I would definitely hire TopDawg again, great company.

Joey and Chris are amazing! They gave me a really good which encompassed plumbing issues in two bathrooms plus the installation of a furnace and air conditioning. Every other HVAC and plumber that my husband and I tried to work with before where out of our budget. Not only did we get a really good deal from working with these guys; their quality of work is exceptional as well. I would highly recommend the Tipping Hat for your plumbing and HVAC needs.

Colorado discount heating and cooling replaced our furnace very quickly and at a very good price. They were very responsive and professional. Upon installation, we noticed a door latch was missing from the new furnace, and they came right back out to fix it. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a standard furnace replacement.

I have worked with Sam at Comfort Solutions several times the past five years and my experience has been exceptional every single time. Sam provided emergency furnace repair on an existing furnace in the middle of a frigid December day. He has also installed ductless heating and cooling mini splits, a furnace humidifier and a new air conditioner for me. Sam's knowledge and can-do attitude leaves me confident in the work he does. Sam has been punctual, professional and dedicated every single time I have worked with him. I have not worked with anyone who is more driven to ensure quality of service as Sam. I would happily refer anyone to Sam at Comort Solutions. Haven

Cleaned and inspected my AC system, and worked hard to find the cheapest solution to my problem. Also walked me through my entire heating and cooling system and taught me the basics I needed to know for maintenance and troubleshooting. I plan on using his company for future projects and would recommend you do the same.

Paul helped me with my boiler problem pretty quickly, which was great. I had a problem with a zone valve, part of the boiler and radiant heating system. He explained the different parts of the system and his process to check each valve. Found out the valve isn't broken, just had a switch stuck in the on position. He was honest and fixed my problem quickly! I would call his company again if I run into boiler problems in the future.

My A/C unit went out Saturday night and I called Field Heating and Cooling Sunday morning. I wasn’t even sure if they were even open, but Dominic answered right away and said he could be over in 30 minutes. And sure enough he was. He diagnosed the issue and explained my options. I ended up replacing the unit and I thought Dominic did a fantastic job. He stayed in constant contact with me, letting me know when he would show up and want he would be doing, which I really appreciated. I will definitely being using Field Heating and Cooling again.

Bergs Heating has consistently gone above and beyond with all of the things we needed. We recently purchased a house that had a 37 year old furnace. When asked to do an inspection before the sale he was very professional, thorough and honest about what he found. That is why we went straight to them for the install of the new furnace as well as the AC. We were very impressed and happy with the install and their flexibility to work on our time table. Even the Inspector was impressed with the install. Thanks Brent and Team!!!

Our furnace quit heating on one of the coldest days of the year. Justin responded very quickly to our Thumbtack request and was able to work us in before noon (arriving earlier than the scheduled time!). He efficiently diagnosed and fixed the problem, and explained some maintenance and replacement options (furnace is 18 years old) for future consideration but with no pressure. We were very satisfied with the service and won't hesitate to call again!

Paul is a very pleasant, professional, and skilled plumber. He worked rapidly and tirelessly getting my three jobs accomplished. I felt secure and comfortable having him in my home. He pointed out some problems with my furnace venting and hot water tank that I will need to address soon. I am grateful that he shared his expertise in those areas. There are other jobs that I will need to have done in the future and I would absolutely use him again. He listened to all of my concerns and provided me with options that I had not thought of. I will pass on my good experience to my friends and neighbors.

My furnace quit, and I needed quick service to replace it. Since my Swamp Cooler went out during the spring, I decided to try to find someone that could replace my heater with central heating and cooling. Randy from Brothers Heating and Cooling quickly responded to my request submitted here. After receiving estimates from several contractors, I decided to go with this company, and I am glad I did. The day after the estimate, his team showed up to do the installation. Not only was the price good, but it included a warranty on the parts, and he matched it with a labor warranty, and included 2 years of service free. I also mentioned that I wished the water heater had been rotated during an installation I had done by another company last year, so his team rotated it for me at no charge. Randy demonstrates a commitment to his customers far exceeding other companies. I will be using his company again, and highly recommend them.

5280 is the BEST! Ryan at 5280 is different than any other heating and air person that I've ever dealt with. He got our furnace running when our furnace went out during a very cold night and thank goodness because we were getting cold! Ryan really cares about people.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace serviced?

When your furnace isn’t regularly serviced it can operate less efficiently. This increases your energy bills and also prevents your furnace from keeping your home as warm as you like. Keep your furnace properly maintained with regular service. The national average furnace service cost is between $60 and $80. Companies may offer tuneup specials that cover all the necessary testing, tightening, measuring and cleaning to keep your equipment running at top efficiency. If you have a newer system, furnace service costs may be covered by your warranty. Outside of warranty, a basic tuneup might start at $58 and a more advanced maintenance cleaning could be over $120. Here are some signs your furnace may need service:

  • The furnace has stopped functioning entirely.
  • The temperature cannot be regulated.
  • Rooms in the home are either too hot or too cold.
  • The heated air coming from the furnace smells like gas.
  • The thermostat isn’t working.
  • Strange noises are coming from the furnace.
