Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a fence professional during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The first step to setting up a consultation with a fence professional during the COVID-19 pandemic is sending the pro a message, which you can easily do online. Ask potential pros if you can set up a phone call or video chat to explain what fencing services you need. A video chat is useful because it allows the fence installer to guide you so they can get the necessary information. During the consultation, discuss virtual payments, the timeline of the project and any precautions you’ll both take to ensure safety.

How can I find out if a fence professional is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To figure out whether a fence professional can be considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, check the website of your city or state government. Another useful resource is CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19, which provides information in a nationwide context.

Within it are 16 different categories of infrastructure sectors that are considered essential. But keep in mind that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for fence and gate installation and repairs?

Currently, many fence and gate professional use common digital payment services like Venmo, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Zelle and more. Many more are quickly adopting the platforms as COVID-19 continues to force companies to digitally transform.

Contact the professional beforehand to discuss whether you can make digital payments, and take all measures to comply with social distancing recommendations. Compare fence professionals side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Does a fence professional need to enter my home?

Fencing jobs are done outdoors, so a fence professional or contractor will most likely not need to enter your home during the project. The exception to this may be any electrical work.

However, you may be able to work with fence professional to give them the information they need ahead of time through video chats, emails and photos sent digitally. Avoid all contact and practice social distancing guidelines set forth by the CDC and your local government. Discuss the best approach with local fence pros before they arrive at your home.

Do fence installers offer remote or virtual services?

Because fence installation needs to be done in person, fence professionals usually cannot offer remote services. If you come across profiles that state they offer remote services, message the fence installer to see what those services include.

For consultations and meetings, ask the fence professional if you can coordinate a virtual consultation in which you explain the project to them through video, photos and drawings transferred online. If not, it may be wise to postpone the project and book an appointment at a later date

I request a quote from Marc to repair a damaged fence gate and he showed up that afternoon! He took a look, made recommendations and quoted me a very reasonable price! He returned a couple of days later and did an awesome job and made the gate just like new (in fact it was - he replaced old boards with great looking new ones)! I'd recommend Mark for any repairs or new construction - I'll use him again gladly!

I can't say enough good about Richard and his team! I have long neglected my wood fence and some heavy winds on Sunday night finally pushed a piece down and I couldn't neglect it anymore. I got in touch with Richard on Monday. On Tuesday, he looked at the problem, provided a quote and was here to do the work on Thursday. Richard recommended replacing the bad sections and repair of several other sections that were loose. He also fixed my gate that has never latched correctly. He says the repairs should keep my fence sturdy for another 5 - 7 years and I believe it! The work is very solid and I am confident that it will survive many wind storms to come! In addition to the great work Richard and his team did, Richard was also on-time, worked quickly, and was overall a very nice guy. He even chopped up and hauled away a branch that fell during the storm that had nothing to do with the fence. Business owners like Richard who take pride in their work, keep their word, and go above and beyond are rare and I appreciate him so much. I will absolutely reach out to Richard the next time my fence needs a tune-up or replacement.

Roy was great. My next door neighbor and I were originally going to repair a small section of our mutual fence where it was bad. We were so impressed with Roy that we ended up doing the entire side yard and my next door neighbor had Roy replace his other side too. Roy provided a detailed estimate with parts and labor broken out, which I appreciated. Roy pointed out the area where we had sitting water under the fence so he raised the cement so the fence would not be exposed to the water in the future, which I thought was an excellent idea. He texted me with each step to let me know about his timing on the project. He is very consciensious and when everything was done he came back and tweaked parts that were not perfect without me having to point it out. I liked him very much and highly recommend him.

Damani's response to my request for quotation was prompt, and very clear. I hired him based on the level of communication he put forth, and was pleased with all of the follow-up. I have a cedar privacy fence, and the lower hinge on the worn-out gate was loose, bent, and causing the gate to sag. I couldn't get it open to take trash to the alley. Damani not only repaired the problem, but also improved the functionality of the entire assembly to prevent future issues with it. I expect the gate will out last the rest of the fence now. He was easy to work with, flexible, accepted my input, and was clear about his intentions. His price was fair, and he finished the project within the anticipated timeframe and cost quote. I will call on him in again if I need something else done.
