I'm a first time user of Thumbtack, and am very impressed with the service. My request for a professional photographer's service referred me to Colorado Visions Photography, and I was very pleased with the results. I got exactly the product photographs I wanted for my e-commerce business, selling home products online. The photographs are now online, and I think they will make a big difference in higher sales than all my competitors. I will definitely use Colorado Visions Photography again, and will use Thumbtack for my future needs.

Karen was wonderful to work with from start to finish. She likes to work in the style I had in mind (loose gatherings of flowers mixing color and texture) so right off the bat we were able to connect on a vision. She was upfront on her costs and came up with ideas to save money along the way since I didn't have an unlimited budget. She contacted me as soon as she found out that the recent hurricane in Florida had increased one of my flower choice costs and offered alternatives if I didn't want to spend the extra amount. Karen was flexible and responsive to my emails, allowing me to add and delete from my order up to the week prior to my wedding; but this did mean I had to be mindful of what the final cost should come out to be as she doesn't keep detailed line item invoices to keep perfect track of the changes along the way. In the end, the flowers she delivered were better than I could have imagined and I am so glad that I choose to hire Karen to create all the arrangements for my wedding day. They were gorgeous. I wish I had photos to add but I'm still waiting on my photographer!

Julie is an outstanding photographer! I was shocked when I learned she had her own 'traveling' studio, which was awesome for us when we did new born shots. She allows plenty of time in order to get great shots with my children. I would highly recommend for milestone photos! She has great props and ideas and not once was I disappointed with the outcome. She also took our family, maternity and birth photos! I was a bit sceptical about having a photographer in the room during labor but she was very respectful and professional and I am so happy we did it because the pictures tell the story of our daughters birth. I can't tell you how lucky I feel to have found her. She has become a part of our family ♡

Jeremiah was so easy to work with. He answered questions quickly. On the day of our wedding he showed up promptly and jumped right in. He was so friendly that everyone felt at ease. He was courteous and inconspicuous. Truthfully some people didn't even know the wedding was being taped. The highlight video he produced and the footage he provided was so moving and magical. He took all the right moments and put them together so that it felt like you were living it again. Many people said they cried all over again. We would highly recommend him to anyone who wants a quality videographer.

I have worked with Britt on numerous projects over the years while I was working in different companies. He is a terrific story teller who is adept at drawing out the best in people not used to being in front of a camera. He stays on task and delivers a premium product every time. I have utilized his skills in man on the street interviews, corporate videos, motion graphics videos, educational productions and more. I consider him my 'go-to' source. He has my highest recommendation

We loved working with the photographer. She was so nice, personable, professional and accommodating. She has taken beautiful senior pictures of our older daughter and we just got family pictures done. We have a family of 6- the youngest is 11 months and the oldest is 17, so it was no easy feat. We will be using her for years to come.

I love Allison Daniell. She shot Christmas pictures at The Garden of the Gods last year for my brothers and I and they turned out absolutely phenomenal! Very professional service and she knew exactly what she was doing. She went that extra mile to make sure she got the perfect shots and I was laughing literally the whole shoot! She's so genuine and open to ideas that I had during the process. Her God given gift is so unbelievably amazing and she is definitely one the best photographers I know. She loves what she does and it is honestly hard to think of anything she can do better! If anything, maybe for her to not be afraid to shout out more shot ideas no matter what the clients may say, because she is so so talented with her creativity and any client would be open to hear her amazing ideas even if it is beyond what they initially agreed on or expected.

My family and I were on vacation and I wanted to have photos done. Heatherley came highly recommended and when I saw her photos I knew we had to use her. She was so fun to work with and both my son and husband who hate having their photos taken had a blast during the photoshoot. My son still talks about Heatherley to this day. I am also a photographer so I tend to be picky when it comes to who I use. Heatherley went above and beyond my expectations and produced, consistent, excellent quality photos for us. I would recommend Heatherley to anyone looking for a fun experience and timeless portraits.

Jennifer did all our unit photography while she was a Soldier in the Army, before she was a “photographer” for a living. Her pictures were amazing back then and I have watched her grow has a photographer since 2005 (again she has been doing this before she ever started doing it as a business). She has worked with groups of up to hundreds of Soldiers as well as smaller groups. I have always loved having our own unit photographer. I was one of her bosses when she was a young Soldier and she has always paid close attention to detail and has always gone out of her way in almost every aspect to ensure people were treated well and that they received the best quality of both customer service and work. She is an old soul and is everything that a small business owner should be. You will not be disappointed.

I hired Jen for my son's 8th birthday party at our house. This is my third time hiring a photographer for my children's birthday parties and third time using Thumbtack. I'm fortunate that I haven't had a bad experience, but Jen has far surpassed everyone else. I love our photographs! And I am very uptight about pictures. I am the family photographer, I take way too many pictures trying to document my children and I'm often not in them as a result. I've been hiring photographers so that I can manage the birthday parties easier, maybe enjoy it a bit, and to be in some pictures. But Jen's picture quality is better than I would have taken. A double win! Jen was very easy to work with. She responded quickly to my bid. She was early to the party to get a sense of our house. She was super friendly and kind with the kids (we have a 8 year old and a 4 year old, and all the kids at the party liked her). She got my son to actually look at her and smile (something he doesn't do for me!). When I asked her to take specific pictures, she was happy to do it. It was a long, hot party and she was friendly and upbeat the whole time. If she was hot and exhausted, she didn't show it. I highly recommend her. She's a friendly, talented, hard working photographer. If you have any questions that I can answer, please let me know. I do get a little nervous hiring strangers for my kids' birthday parties, especially since some of them are at our house, but so far I've had great luck with Thumbtack and we love Jen! Hire her!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want. Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June. Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
