I feel very fortunate that I ran across Steve Petersen and his Mountaintop Construction company when it was determined that I would need a new roof on my house as a result of the large May 8, 2017 hail storm in the Denver, Colo. metro areas. Steve got in touch with me almost immediately after he was referred to me by a referral company called Thumbtack. Steve gave me a more than fair quote on price to replace my roof and had no problems with my waiting a couple of months to have the roof done. Steve helped me all the way through the job, coming out to check out my roof and provide me with his estimate within 24 hrs. I am an 81 yr. old Senior and don't always understand everything and Steve was very patient and thorough in explaining everything so that I would understand it all. He checked my insurance adjuster's estimate and his estimate was within the insurance estimate. He ordered the materials for me and was here up early and monitored the roofing crew's work until the job was done. He relieved me of my anxiety and lack of knowledge on all that had to be done, type of material and how much etc. I could not be happier and feel very lucky and fortunate that I had a man like Steve helping me get the new roof done. If I ever need another roof or other work done that his company does, I will not hesitate to call him again and also will refer anyone I know who is looking for a contractor to call Steve and his company, I have no regrets and am sure anyone else would not have any regrets either. There are good companies, and medium companies and poor companies, Steve's Mountaintop Construction Company happens to be an Excellent and Outstanding company in my mind. One of the best of the best. Ricky Morris provided a new window to the living room and new hardwood flooring to the family room on concrete slab including window and baseboard trim and casing. I am happy to recommend him for the work he did for us and can say he is one of the best contractors with whom I have ever worked. All of the measures described above would receive a 10/10 rating and I am looking forward to having him complete some other home projects that have been languishing at my hand over the past few years. He is courteous and knowledgeable and a pleasure with whom to work. Jeff B.

I very much love the after part of my remodeled home. It turned out beautiful. As with most remodeling projects there were a few bumps along the way that were handled well. It was also an FHA 203k project that we all were handling for the first time. The procedure is different but everyone made it work. Thanks for making my home a place that I never want to leave. I would not hesitate to refer Jordan to anyone!

I just had my deck , patio slab, and sliding patio doors project done through Red Earth Construction. Family team of Jim, Jason, and Jim Sr. I would use them again. I'm very cautious of who I would use as I have terrible experiences working with contractors in the past, losing money and having uncompleted poor projects.. Each time I have learned what not to do, but having met Jim who I went through the process was great. You get a sense of trust and confidence working with him. I had a budget and I did get other quotes but they came in with the best quote including with the 2 patio doors (custom done through Sunrise). The deck and patio slab took a full week to get done, and sliding doors were put in after. All of their crews that did the specific projects did a beautiful job, I was most impressed with Jerry their window/door installer. They did and great job retro fitting the beautiful sliding patio doors with the blinds . Meticulous on housekeeping , and detail . I will go through Red Earth Construction again on different home projects that can do. The family are all great, professional and easy to work with.

Michael installed our over-sized kitchen sink. We have granite counter tops, and he was the only person willing to cut the granite to make room for our sink without charging an arm and a leg! Michael was extremely polite, cleaned up after himself, and provided quality work and an excellent price. As we continue to renovate our home we look forward to hiring him again!

Dan and his team of sub contractors do excellent work. If you want a job done well, with attention to detail and quality control, I highly recommend this company. The only are of issue for us was with scheduling and punctuality. We had some unavoidable delays, but also a few instances of poor communication and uncertainty about project deadlines. Dan is an honorable and trustworthy man. His intention is to do his job with excellence- and we have a beautiful kitchen to support that claim.

These guys rocked our deck project. Brian was very accommodating to our needs and our budget. The project turned out better than we expected. They were very thoughtful about when my 18mo daughter would be sleeping to not ring the doorbell. We had issues with the weather but, all that aside these guys did a great job. I am very happy with the deck and we even were able to upgrade it with being a little larger and built-in planter boxes that my wife loves! Our old deck was falling apart, to the point the stairs disintegrated when they were doing demo. We are so glad we got this project done as we feel we can now enjoy our backyard space again. Steve is an awesome carpenter and really loves what he does. He was very meticulous in his work and it showed. Overall Brian and Steve did an excellent job, I've recommended them to a neighbor for their deck repair as well.

Shane and ALL his guys are truly the best! They are kind and very thorough, extremely detail oriented but also flexible, accommodating and trustworthy . We had a horrible experience with a contractor that did our job completely wrong and Burke construction and design inc came in and made us feel confident and fixed everything that was wrong and restored our faith in contractors. Contractors often get a bad reputation but Shane and his company are changing that reputation! Take a chance on them, it will be more than worth it!

I had all of my kitchen cabinets replaced and new countertops put in. I have a small kitchen and didn't know what to replace everything with. Lance had awesome ideas to give me more space and a TOTAL update to my kitchen! Lance helped from measuring, ordering Everthing and installing it all. He worked around my schedule and always showed up on time. He was also always available via text or phone. I am incredibly happy with the work they did. I would highly recommend their work. I LOVE MY NEW KITCHEN!

Dixon Renovation Squad did an awesome job of remodeling my master bathroom. I obtained many quotes and not only were they the most reasonable they did a fantastic job. At first I was just going to do the shower as this was a house I moved into but after discussing with Shannon, I decided to redo the whole thing. I am so glad I did. Shannon and Ken are very knowledgable, answered all my questions and even helped me pick out tile. I am so pleased with their work that I am going to have them re-do the front bathroom as well. In addition, their work has increased the value of my home.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.
