I had a *very* old, *VERY* heavy full upright that needed to navigate into a small landing, down a flight of wooden stairs with low clearance (the piano barely made it), down concrete steps, over grass, then cross town into a condo with an obstructed doorway so Grandpa Piano had to go around a long building, over grass *uphill*, through a yard, and through a patio door which needed to be adjusted to let him pass. Grandpa had several loose parts but crew swaddled him like a baby, and were just as respectful of the floors and doors. This whole endeavor was much more challenging and took much more time than Jerry had anticipated. But Jerry and his three crew members (yeah, Grandpa was really that heavy!!) were good humored, courteous, professional, problem-solving, efficient, and helpful. On top of that, they had a really great team dynamic. What would have been an absolutely nerve wracking experience for me (Grandpa is REALLY old! I expected him to fall apart from a single bump.) turned out to be pretty fun. I would recommend these guys for *any* moving job you have. Your stuff *AND YOU* would be in the most capable hands coupled with a wonderful attitude and great work ethic. *Thank you* Jerry, Mike, Brad, and Dominique!!!

thought I would counter the rant with today's really positive experience. I rented a tiny storage unit this weekend(5*12) and needed to put in major shelving but didn't want to bother anyone and I can't lift anything for a month (another story). I posted on the neighborhood app but no answers so I used an app I'd downloaded called Thumbtack on Saturday to try to find someone to pick up and assemble steel racks. I had 3 bids on Sunday, no one could do it on Sunday, however I texted Marc and he said he could do it on Monday. Today, Monday, Marc and I text back and forth of when he is picking up the racks at Home Depot, when he will arrive at the storage unit (right on time). I unlock it, give him bins the size I want to stack etc and leave. Get two solid hours of work. In between he texts me photo of the first rack with the bins stacked to show that everything fits and asks if I want the second rack shelf heights the same. Third rack didn't fit. He agrees to bring it to my apartment and build it in my closet. So professional and so easy. $160 for the entire thing which I could not have done. Will definitely recommend and work with him again. Good job Thumbtack!

Tait did a phenomenal job assembling the two most difficult pieces of IKEA furniture in the entire universe (a PAX custom wardrobe and a hydraulic storage bed). He was very punctual - even early both days during the installation - and he is very kind, friendly and a joy to be around. I will be calling Tait for any furniture builds in the future and I recommend him to anyone who needs a hand with assembly. Great work!

This was the best experience I've ever had with a contractor. They came in at the lowest bid, they literally started the day after I signed the contract, they were on time, exceeded my expectations with their knowledge and the work they did, finished a huge deck and pergola for me in two weeks, and overall were awesome. I would fully recommend Forest, Antonio, Moises, and Miguel to anyone looking for any type of work to be done.

Mark worked for me for 4 days, painted unfinished garage, bedroom accent wall, installed 3 ceiling fans with remotes, keypad lock, garage door insulation installation. He does a great job and is prompt. When I called him back for questions about something, his attitude was good. I would use him again.

Abel knew my family was on a short timeline and set an early start time. Later, he even offered to come earlier, in which we eagerly abliged. He and his team were respectful of my home, worked expeditiously and the end result was nothing short of amazing. We really lucked out hiring Abel and his team - the backsplash was installed perfectly, with excellent craftsmanship. Not only would I highly recommend American Team to anyone, we intend on hiring him in the future for other projects. A+!!!!!!

Ian and Skyler did a great job. They built me a custom metal shed, refinished all my fences and applied a transparent stain. They also performed 5-7 other handymen jobs around my house. Their attention to detail is something I liked best. I will be using them again.

Top notch job. Got there on time, finished on time. Absolute beautiful build of a very large Pergola. Chris was professional, honest and friendly. Even helped us decide where to place the Pergola to allow the best use. Can't recommend him enough. Genuine craftsman. You won't regret hiring Chris for anything.

We hired Daniel to remove some windows and install French doors in their place. This did not seem like an easy job with the fact our home was built in 1893 and he was basically cutting a hole in the side of the house. Gonzales construction made it look easy! His team worked with skill and efficiency and did the job without issue. They also installed a redwood deck to bring us through the doors and onto a newly constructed stone patio. The result was worthy of 5 stars! Thanks Daniel!

We had a fence installed by Castle Fence. The whole experience was wonderful. We had a new build home we were moving into and they were able to get the us in the day we closed on the house. They were very nice and did a wonderful job. They were here and had everything completed when they said they would. I have every intention of recommending them to our neighbors that will be needing fences soon as well!

We had an 8' cabinet (two 4 ft sections) that actually fell off our laundry room wall. Charlie rebuilt the cabinets for us and explained that the back of the original cabinets had been plywood and eventually couldn't hold the weight of the contents (which really wasn't that much) and thus caused the cabinets to pull away from the wall. Anyway, Charlie has years of cabinet making experience and explained exactly what needed to be done to rebuild the cabinets, make them stronger and re-install them. He was easy to work with and we are delighted with his finished work. We are happy to recommend him to anyone who needs new cabinets or cabinet repairs.

Marc built us a beautiful redwood front porch! He kept us involved the entire time and was the most reasonably priced. All of our neighbors are asking for his info! He also worked while we weren't even there and made sure to stay on track even when Home Depot failed to deliver materials on time, he went and got them himself.

Remodeled entire kitchen and 4 bathrooms as well as taking down a bedroom wall. What was so great about the whole experience was just dealing with one person for everything - electrical, gas, lighting, drywall, tile - the work was exceptional.

We hired Galvan Remodeling to finish our basement with two conforming bedrooms and a 3/4 bathroom with a double vanity. We were very happy with the results and found that Jose and his crew were very fast and courteous. They even moved all of their tools and supplies through the basement window so they didn't make a mess in the rest of the house! Jose was always making sure throughout the build that we were happy with the progress. Galvan Remodeling finished the build on time and in budget! We would definitely hire Galvan Remodeling again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
