We used Robinson & Co. to remodel a small bathroom, including drywall, tile, granite, and plumbing. They completed the job as estimated (very reasonable compared to other bids) and their work is high quality. Vern is very professional, easy to work with and dealt with anything that came up quickly and responsively - always ensuring our satisfaction in the end. We would definitely recommend Robinson & Co. again and would use them again for future projects.

Hired on Thumbtack

I contracted with Vern Robertson of Robertson & Company, Inc. to build an ADA compliant restroom and a break counter with cabinets and sink in my work shop. We started the project on July 2, 2013 and it was handed off to me 29 working days later on August 9. It was supposed to take 20 working days to finish, so it was about a week late and would have taken longer if I hadn't strongly expressed my concern over the lack of progress about 3 calendar weeks into the project. Vern is a nice guy but he's overworked such that he didn't do a good job of overseeing the work and was increasingly slow responding to my emails plus his attitude was at times poor when under stress from his other projects and commitments. Some of his sub-contractors didn't do the best work and at times were unprofessional and rude. They were late to meetings with me and I was told they sometimes didn't show up at all when I was out of town. This resulted in delays and having to reschedule at least 1 inspection. The quality of the finished work overall is about 6 on a scale of 10. The cabinets for the break counter (which I supplied) were installed crooked. The cabinet doors won't line up because the cab boxes can no longer be leveled with the installed screw feet. This is because the boxes were screwed into the wall. I requested they be left free-standing so they could be trued-up and the height adjusted. The high-end faucet I purchased for the counter needs some sort of adjustment as the water flow is less than half of that coming out of the adjacent restroom faucets (the pressure there is good), and the integrated sprayer hose is too short and also needs adjustment. Inside the restroom, the door closer was adjusted such that it can't be held open with one hand and slams very hard. I had to disconnect it. The plumbing pass-through to the outside sink was very roughly finished and can't take a finishing bezel because there's so much dry wall tape and compound heaped up around the pipe. The specified wall storage cabinet was never bought or installed and the matt paint they used is un-washable. The walls and door are marked-up with numerous hand and finger prints left behind by the installers. I have tried to wash the walls and door, but they won't come clean. The hot water heater plumbing is a Rube-Goldberg tangle of pipes and fittings that in my estimation, will be difficult to maintain and repair. In addition, all of the paperwork in the form of installation and user guides plus the warrantee cards were tossed out. I now have no information for adjusting and maintaining the hydraulic door closer, the high-end faucet on the break counter, the water heater or the automatic light and fan controls in the restroom. I asked that all this paperwork be saved, but it wasn't. I was told afterwards by Vern they have never saved any paperwork of this kind in 20 years of doing business. I am disappointed with the dismissive tone he has taken over this and for leaving me without the information I need for the equipment. He did finally send me a PDF of the information for installing and adjusting the door closer, but I can't confirm it's for the unit installed on my door, and I still don't have any warrantee information for the unit. I can only shake my head that he missed my request to make sure I got the documentation and never thought to ask me if I wanted to keep it before it was tossed out. When Vern and I did the walk through on Friday, August 9th (I had asked to meet on Monday or Tuesday, but he said he was too busy), I noticed and pointed out a few of the items that needed to be finished or fixed. It took me 2 more days to find the rest of the problems as I resumed work in the shop. A week later, nothing had been touched and I had to send 3 or 4 emails before Vern would give me a date when his sub would be in touch. I finally got fed-up with the poor communications, delays, excuses and dismissive attitude. As of late last Friday, August 16th, I exchanged several emails with Vern and decided to cut my losses and terminate the unfinished project. I should point out that throughout, Vern was promptly paid in full the $8032.00 (originally estimated at $7323.00) when he sent his incremental invoices. After all was said and done, I offered him an opportunity to respond to me, to have his say and present his side before I wrote this review. He failed to respond, so I was left with no choice but to reluctantly sum up the events of the last 7 weeks and express my disappointment, frustration and general feeling of having been taken advantage of. I am now going to have to hire another contractor to finish the work at additional expense and can only hope I find someone that is better to work with. As you may guess, I am not happy with Vern's handling of the project nor the finished work. While the counter and restroom are usable, the quality of the work and finish are not worth what I paid and the experience was exasperating and depressing. I was hoping for much better. So NO: I do not recommend this contractor. Edward M. Rose edvgs@aol.com 720-351-0854
Robinson's reply
As you can see from Mr. Roses' note here, he is very detail oriented. I received a note like this several times a week during the process. After i met with him and did a final walk through of the job, i received a 54 page punch list, including complaints about the requirements by the building department. i don't believe i could satisfy him.
