Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How can I find out if a general contractor is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a general contractor is considered essential in your area during the current coronavirus pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website, which will have information on essential services.

Find information on national recommendations by visiting CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a general contractor when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a general contractor, avoid any physical contact, don’t shake hands, keep 6 feet of distance between you and the pro and sanitize all involved surfaces. Also, use digital platforms to communicate and make payments.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

What is the best waterproof flooring for a basement?

There are several great options for waterproof basement flooring. For example, epoxy floors are waterproof but are thicker and sturdier than paint. Make sure the concrete substrate has been prepared for application.

Tile is a designer’s dream, giving you a moisture-resistant surface that’s infinitely customizable. Rubber sheets or tiles are also good waterproof options, particularly for playrooms, workout areas or laundry rooms.

Vinyl tiles and planks imitate wood or other materials very convincingly, provide moisture resistance and last a long time. And sheet vinyl is affordable and a great waterproofing solution for those in need of quick fixes.

Do general contractors offer remote or virtual services?

General contractors perform manual work and typically need to be present to complete their projects. However, if you come across a profile that states the contractor is offering remote services, ask what those services include. You can also ask if they can perform a consultation via video call and if they can do the job while following guidelines from the CDC and local agencies.

Does a general contractor need to enter my home?

Provided the project is located inside your home, completing the job would require a general contractor to enter your home. But if your project is located outdoors, a general contractor will likely not need to enter your home. Discuss your options with general contractors in your area before hiring.

Daniel was very easy to work and did a great job finishing our basement. He also finished in a timely manner.

I hired Luis Vergara construction to finish a large room and do drywall repair in my basement. They were very responsive and produced a competitive bid that worked with my budget. I was most impressed with their ability to start right away and finish on time and on budget, which totaled just two weeks. Daniel and his wife were kind and communicated well. They also thought of the little thing like laying down substantial protective floor covers in other parts of my house and installing handy access panels.

Old West Construction just wrapped up our basement and we couldn’t be happier with it. Right from the start, we had a good feeling about working with Armando as they took the time to really think about our basement, and listen to what we wanted from the space, and to then draw up multiple options for us to look at. They put together an estimate and then contract that were both clear and gave us a good understanding of what we were looking at from a cost standpoint, including the places where its common to upgrade and where that could impact the price along the way. We had to wait a few weeks for the job to start since they were already working on another job, but Armando was always very communicative about how that project was going and the expected start date. After we got started everything was very smooth and we were kept in the loop all along the way. They had a port-a-potty on site and went in and out through the basement window so we only saw them when there were questions, or when there were large items they needed to bring in down the stairs like the drywall, granite, etc. We’ve worked with some companies where the “sales” person you see at the beginning is never seen or heard from again, but Armando was there, on-site and on the phone with us the whole time. There were a few things that were sub-contracted, but it was clear that Armando was the one running the job, and worked with us directly throughout the entire project. Along the way, a number of choices came up and Old West Construction was very helpful in providing us with options, including additions to the original scope of work (we ended up using them to replace our 20 year old furnace and AC as a part of the project, decided to add extra soundproofing, etc). They were never pushy but still willing to make recommendations when we wanted one, which was very helpful. It’s easy to be happy with the company you picked when everything is going great, but the real sign of a great company is how they are when things go sideways. We ended up changing direction on a fireplace addition after getting pretty close to picking one out, and Armando and team had no problem reacting to our change of heart. Later in the project, we noticed that a stain color was wrong, and they immediately confirmed that it was the wrong color, and sanded, and re-stained everything the next day, no further questions or discussion needed. The quality of the basement is fantastic throughout, from a custom sump-pump knock out, to a custom wood wrap covering a steel beam, to the bedrooms and bathroom and everything else. Every detail is perfect. Aside from the house itself, this was our single biggest purchase / projects ever, and we could not be any happier that we chose to go with Old West Construction. If you’re considering finishing or remodeling your basement, do yourself a favor, and go with Armando and Old West Construction, you’ll be glad you did.

If Ross bids on your job, accept it, period. We bought a house in Arvada, and it needed severe updating. We have zero experience with any sort of remodeling/updating/construction/contractors etc., and we went with Ross over other bids primarily because he said he could meet our tight timeline and he just seemed like the right guy from the start. The project has all but concluded, and Ross exceeded any expectation I had about contractors, especially in this market, and especially since I have heard so many horror stories from various individuals throughout Denver. Ross was quick to respond to any questions we had and constantly gave us project updates as things moved along (we spoke almost daily, and it would have been daily if I wanted). He made us feel like we were his only clients, despite having multiple other jobs going while working with us. One of numerous stories; the night we moved in the house we notice a leak coming from the ceiling in our kitchen, I sent Ross a text on a Sunday morning showing him the issue, and on the same Sunday morning he was over at my house, giving up his one day of the week to do personal stuff fixing our plumbing that had been poorly repaired by a subcontractor. Not one grumble, sigh, or hint that it was an inconvenience to him, and that is Ross. There are too many stories like this to include, he goes above and beyond to make you happy in all of his work, and in some cases, work that is not his, because well, it does not look right to him, and he wants it to be right. He makes you feel like he can and will do anything, and he does. He literally takes care of everything, and addresses all concerns. He is honest, and he is straight with you on what is possible and what it will cost, and guess what, it costs exactly what he tells you! We have beyond enjoyed working with Ross and his crew over the past 6 weeks, and look forward to hiring him to do a basement finish in the future. I will go out of my way to tell people to use him for any home remodel project.
