Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a landscaper or lawn care professional during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation call with a lawn care professional or landscaper during the COVID-19 pandemic, take advantage of digital technologies to avoid face-to-face exposure. When searching for lawn mowing, landscaping and lawn care companies online, ask if they’ll do a video call to assess the job and give you an estimate. You can also go over strategies for completing the job and conducting virtual payments to stay safe.

How can I find out if a landscaper or lawn care professional is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To consult national guidelines on essential COVID-19 service providers and see whether a lawn care professional qualifies, visit a page on CISA’s website called Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This website contains 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors that you can search through. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure so you should also check your city or state’s government website.

Can I use digital payments to pay for outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing, tree trimming and other similar services?

Many outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing and tree trimming companies will likely accept some form of digital payment instead of cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely causing more businesses to adopt digital platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash and Google Pay.

Search professionals’ online profiles to see if they list digital payment services, and ask them about their payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a landscaper or lawn care professional need to enter my home?

Because landscaping and lawn maintenance take place outdoors, it is unlikely that these professionals will need to enter your home.

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, practice social distancing at all times -- even with professionals doing work outside. You can minimize exposure during a consultation by using a video chat service. And when you pay, you can use a digital payment service like PayPal. Discuss strategies with any lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming and lawn care companies you may be considering.

Do landscapers or lawn care professionals offer remote or virtual services?

Landscapers and lawn care professionals generally do not offer remote or virtual services. But if you come across a profile that states the landscaper is offering remote services, it’s best to contact them to see what type of remote work is offered.

Typically, lawn care and landscaping professionals can perform many of their duties without coming into physical contact with clients. Message local lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming, and lawn care companies near you to schedule a video call and inquire about remote services.

Is hiring a landscaper worth it?

A landscaper is worth it if you don't want to invest a significant amount of time and effort into planting, trimming, raking, weeding and performing other operations on your garden or yard. Hiring a landscaper to perform regular maintenance in your yards and complete bigger projects is valuable if you’re looking to sell your house. A professional landscaper can make your house more appealing to potential buyers.

Some landscapers may perform maintenance duties — remove leaves, mow lawns, trim trees and shrubs, etc. —  but they can also help you bring bigger projects to life. This may include adding a misting system, an outdoor fireplace, water features, artificial turf, a patio and much more.

Start contacting landscapers near you to get free estimates and start planning your project today.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

What is included in lawn service?

Full-service lawn care companies typically offer a wide range of lawn care services, including mowing, mulching, landscaping, leaf removal, tree and shrub care, and more.

Companies may offer additional specialty services, depending on your location and the type of business. For example, a company may provide seasonal maintenance services such as aeration, hedge trimming and weeding, while another offers pest control, seeding services and grub control.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

Adam is a work horse! Rain or shine he was out there getting the job done. Knotty by Nature did an excellent job on the landscaping for our rehab project. I highly recommend him for all your landscaping needs.

Delgado's landscaping did a fantastic job on my side yard. What would have taken me at least a week working on my own took them part of a day. They cleaned up the area, removed a dead bush and dead grass, and put in nice river rock to finish the job. They gave me a very fair and affordable price for the work. You won't be disappointed if you hire these landscapers!

Paul came out and assessed the landscape. Provided a "shoot from the hip price." I didn't really get a good gauge if he really wanted to do the project. At the end, he did say he was going to create a design and provide an estimate. He never did provide a design or estimate. If landscaper's are so busy in this area they should just tell the client no, I am too busy. Or even better, don't commit to or leave the client wondering.

Justin and his crew did a wonderful job with renewing the landscaping in my small backyard with fresh sod, a new sprinkler system and mulched planting areas. He was easy to work with and reasonably priced.

Just started we have only completed about half of the project, but so far so good. Mike is very professional and responsive & down to earth. Contacted 5 landscapers he was one of two who actually showed up and the only one that followed up.

The landscaping team put in a large play area for our son using 6x6 timbers and filling with play sand. The crew was very professional, efficient and the cost of the project was very reasonable. Justin was able to fit us in within a few days. I would highly recommend their service.

Bennett did a great job on my project. He was very good at keeping me up to date with what's going on with the project. After some trouble with a piece of equipment, he finished the job by hand to make sure that it was completed on time. It was lots of hard work, but it was definitely appreciated. I'll be sure to look him up next time I have any landscaping/outdoor project.

Highly recommend Delgado's landscaping! Fabian was very easy to work with, showed up exactly when he said he would, did just as I asked and finished my project in only two days at a reasonable price. He removed three trees, ground the stumps down, removed a large rock fountain that was overgrown, leveled the ground and placed sod. Very pleased with my yard!

I hired Aaron to remove vegetation from the front yard. He tilled the area to prepare for the soil to be layered on the top. Then a dry creek bed was made with river rock. Then the mulch was spread on top. It turned out very well. Aaron worked for many hours. He checked with me frequently to be sure I was pleased. I would recommend him for yard care and landscaping. I will hire him again.

Paul was the most responsive and on top of it of any of the landscapers I contacted. He was always in a good mood and willing to answer questions. We had some very difficult people for Paul and his guys to work around, but he didn’t bat an and eye and was incredibly flexible. He turned a past rental neglected by tenants for years into a home with a yard that I can be proud of when I drive up! I’ve gotten so many compliments from passers-by.

I hired Linda last summer to fill in a hole left from a water feature I removed myself, and rebuild the flagstone patio over the area. Her fill-dirt estimate was off by two tons, and she had to go back to the landscape supply twice. The new area of the patio she designed was significantly different than the original patio area, so after she left, we ended up relaying the flagstones ourselves to achieve a more uniform look. It took much longer to do the project than originally planned, and cost significantly more than the original quote. I am grateful that I didn't have to find a way to truck in 3 tons of fill dirt and level it myself, and a bunch of flagstones, but I am not the only one on here with similar issues and hope that this helps other people shopping around for contractors. Had she done good work, been reliable, and given a good estimate, I would be gladly hiring her for work I need done this summer. However, as this was not the case, I am currently shopping around for a more honest landscaper.

I had several dead or dying small trees that had to be removed as well as serious pruning of overgrown currant bushes. The trees and stumps were removed and the areas raked smooth. I had the chips retained for mulching. The 3 member team worked steadily, efficiently, and cheerfully for three hours and left the area very tidy. The work was delayed for a week or so until the weather cooperated but all is ready for new plantings new week as I had hoped. Communication with the company was timely and I was kept informed of their scheduled arrival. I would use them again if I have other landscaping needs I can't handle.

I had an 'emergency' fallen tree removal job -- a 30'+ tree, of which a good portion had blown over in a recent wind storm. Izzy called within minutes of my on-line request, and provided a very solid plan for an immediate removal. He quickly arrived, surveyed the damage and removal requirements, and provided a very reasonable estimate. I was very impressed with Izzy's and his partner, Will's professional, detailed, and accurate approach to solving my problem. They worked very efficiently as a team and always kept their safety, and the safety of my property foremost in mind. Although they were not able to remove all the debris that evening, they organized it and cleaned the entire damaged area such that one would not have known there had been any damage or a large tree removed. Very impressive! Without question or reservation, I highly recommend Izzy and Will, and I will surely call them first for any future landscape projects I may have. Respectfully, Phil Pallone Ft.
