Very professional and was very acomadating on sound since we work from home. When the work was complete it was as if the repair wasn't needed. He matched the old dry wall completely and fixed what I messed up! I will ask him to do more work should the need arise.

The workers are polite and come promptly and work very hard. I hired them to do one job at first... to demolish a 14 X 18 foot wall of bricks/entertainment center in a new home that I purchased. My husband and I were very pleased and then re-hired the crew to do a dozen more things to renovate and update this home. Among the tasks they removed tile, removed a 3-way facing gas fireplace that was awkwardly placed, remove brick facing off some columns, move a few floor outlets, take out dated shower sliding doors and move chandeliers and some utility cabinets (so I'd have more space for my large washer/dryer). And more! This is an excellent company that I will continue to use for smaller projects. No one on the team even flinched when I changed my mind about things, they just go with the flow... and do what I ask like true professionals. Pricing on my original project was the best on thumbtack, and continues to be very fair.

Randy responded to my request immediately and was able to complete this job in a quick turnaround. He made sure to completely understand what I wanted regarding colors before he started. Randy also went above and beyond to ensure all trim was looking as fresh as the walls and that I was happy with how the room looked when he finished. I loved only supplying paint and letting him do the rest. Thanks for a quality job, Randy!

Remodeled entire kitchen and 4 bathrooms as well as taking down a bedroom wall. What was so great about the whole experience was just dealing with one person for everything - electrical, gas, lighting, drywall, tile - the work was exceptional.

I reached out to Andrew Scott Builders for a major repair to our house. Ian and Andy were able to come up with a solution to save us thousands on the repair. Ian was very dedicated, always available and was able to juggle multiple tasks at the same time. I would recommend these guys for any contracting work.

Trent is a straight shooter motivated by integrity. I had requested drywall repair for a 1.5' x 1.5' hole in the wall. When he gave me his estimate he thought it was for a 1.5"x1.5" hole. The job took a little over two hours instead of the quoted one, but Trent refused to let me pay him for the extra time or the materials he had to purchase because of the larger hole. He was extremely professional asking permission to use my sinks and let me know that his saw was going to be loud. He also cleaned up after himself and the work is top notch. I will look to hire Trent again for my future projects.

Matt helped us with a variety of jobs related to our kitchen renovation. We had a very outdated (1940-1950's era) kitchen, and were working to renovate through IKEA. A group associated with IKEA installed new cabinets and countertops, and Matt did literally EVERYTHING else. He performed a difficult demo and prepped our walls for install, and afterwards worked to finish all other aspects of our project- including new tile flooring, cutting for and installing a new sink, and properly installing a microwave/hood combo. These tasks are only a small portion of the total body of work Matt completed however. All told, this was a BIG project for a relatively small kitchen; nonetheless we could not have been more pleased with Matt's craftsmanship, attention to detail, and thoroughness. Matt did not leave anything undone and is clearly passionate about providing the best work possible. Communicating and working with Matt was very easy & straightforward, and there were never any questions about the job being done or the quality of work. Even when we asked Matt do perform additional duties midway through out project, he was flexible in incorporating these additions in. We could not be more happy with our new kitchen and would highly recommend Matt & Big Red Innovations to others (and we will likely be working with him again in the future!).

We had a small hole in our wall that needed to be patched from a gas heater removal. We also needed the old heater thermostat and wire removed. Tom quickly responded on Thumbtack and was very flexible with the timing of the project. He was punctual, courteous, and professional. And we loved the repair work he did. We will definitely use Tom, again!

This was a good experience from start to finish. Mike looked over the old bathroom and provided a written estimate to gut and redo the whole room. We set a start date and on the day we chose they began. Since my house is over 35 years old we expected surprises, so when we found issues with my floor we revised the estimate - the changes were UNDER $1000 and only took one day more. Drywall took the longest to complete, but re-tiling the walls and floors went smoothly! The best surprise was having the glass block shower wall installed - it was done in less than a day and looked fantastic! The entire job took a week and a half and I am thrilled with the end product. - The new shower cartridge had issues so they came back and made it right. They worked clean and picked up all the debris. Am I satisfied? You bet!

Remove popcorn ceiling from 4 rooms and deal with 5 stress cracks in walls and ceiling. Steven was really great. The job took longer than it should have because he and I did not communicate as well as we should. MY Fault. He did a great job!! I would hire Browns again any time. He does lots of other things besides popcorn. THANK YOU STEVEN.

I hired John to patch a hole in a wall, add texture to the finish and paint the spot. He did a fantastic job...you can't tell at all that there was a large hole and the texture and paint blend in perfectly! He was very reasonable in terms of price, responsive and very pleasant. I will definitely hire him for future jobs.!

We just purchased a 3 bedroom/3 bath townhome. I originally contacted Rudy to repaint the whole interior. He estimated the job to be completed in two weeks which is what I was hoping for. A few days later I decided to remove the orange peel texture throughout + still do the paint. This significantly increased the complexity and scope of the project. Not only was Rudy and his team able to complete the project in 2 weeks, the outcome is phenomenal. Beautiful smooth walls just like I envisioned. Thank you!

Fran built our house from start to finish. We still have the basement to finish. It is a rather large house. The quality of the work was excellent. He custom built our home and we love it. He had a lot of very good suggestions. He and his crew were always polite, friendly and cooperative. They were good and courteous to one another. We were around them for approximately six months or more. The things we had trouble with were the work seemed to have taken longer as there would be days when there was no one doing anything. We understand that we were not his only clients and he had to manage the crews. We were always around, which in talking with other people who have had their houses built, most builders do not want or allow. We have a few things which still need to be finished. I feel Fran will do them but it is difficult to work around. The other thing is that I felt, then and now, that if the premises were kept more clean with less clutter they would be able to work more easily. As it was. one group doing staining left. some rags in a pile. When they caught fire there was a lot of damage with the smoke. I will say that they got busy and cleaned the walls redid the painting, repaired the damage and concentrated on getting rid of the smoke smell which was quite extensive. All in all I would recommend having Fran do the work.because in the end the quality is there

Mark truly did an amazing job! My husband and I removed a wall between our living room and kitchen to create an open concept. We wanted the room to look as if it had always been that way but we struggled repairing the dry wall and getting the texture to match. So, we called Mark in to get the job done. The texture between the rooms was hand done in the 70’s so it was hard to match but he did a really nice job blending it. He also repaired dry wall around some light fixtures, tidied up the end of one wall, fixed a patch in the bathroom and had to texture the ceiling in the living room to match the kitchen texture which was quite the job. He was very thorough throughout the process explaining what he was doing and why. He was on time for the job and he took his time to ensure the quality of his work was top notch. He took pride in trying to establish a professional relationship with us and was quick to respond when we had a question. I have already referred him to friends and family and I will continue to use his services in the future for any other work I have. Thank you so much for your hard work Mark. Daniel and I really appreciate it!

I highly recommend SCB Handy Man Services. I recently had multiple tasks around our home to be done but could not find a "single" company to provide multiple tasks. My husband and I both work, two kids in sports and just didn't have time to get to what we needed and wanted to do to our home. We hired SCB to clean gutters, patch and paint some walls, gut and re-do our bathroom, fix a leaking sink and running toilette in another bathroom, replace our garbage disposal, and replace a light fixture. There was some other odd and things that SCB discovered and repaired along the way! I also learned that SCB provides complete remodels and other fix-it stuff. SCB was on-time, available, professional, easy on the wallet and can do just about anything!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
