This was the best experience I've ever had with a contractor. They came in at the lowest bid, they literally started the day after I signed the contract, they were on time, exceeded my expectations with their knowledge and the work they did, finished a huge deck and pergola for me in two weeks, and overall were awesome. I would fully recommend Forest, Antonio, Moises, and Miguel to anyone looking for any type of work to be done.

$10K+ large deck refinish and reconstruction. Ray and his crew are excellent. No fuss professionals that do what is promised and do it very, very well. Terrific people doing terrific work and having the tools, skills and attitude to make it happen. It's just that simple. The deck is top notch and was finished quickly. I have no hesitation in hiring again for next project in the future. Thank you Ray and team!

Daniel and his crew did a fantastic job building our new front porch. This wasn't a project for an inexperienced contractor, as we had to fire one (due to lack of knowledge and technique) before we met with Gonzalez Construction LLC. Daniel and his team were on time, on budget, and followed the specific permit drawings which were approved. There is no doubt that we will be contacting them again on our upcoming projects. A reliable, truthful, professional, and experienced contractor is hard to find, believe me, save yourself the headache and go with them.

Brett came and helped me tear down a deck and clean up my yard a while back. By the time I called him I had been working on my project for, well, longer than I'd like to admit. It would've been days, had I done all the work myself, without a doubt. Within a few hours, he and I had the whole deck scrapped, the lawn cleaned up and ready to seed before dinner time. Honestly, I was kind of amazed.

I have used Michael Rodriguez's Belle Creek Handyman multiple times. He and his crew have: laid a brick patio and walkway, built flower beds, installed sinks with hardware, fixed a toilet; and tended to outdoor lights for me. Michael is very personable and conscientious. He consulted me every step of the way, called to be sure everything had been done to my satisfaction and was always pleasant and hard-working. It is obvious that customer satisfaction and completing a job well are priorities for him. Members of his crew were always very easy to work with and eager to please.

I needed my deck repaired quickly as we had an upcoming graduation party. Israel came that day to provide a quote. The quote was very reasonable. He had a team out within the week and fixed my deck! The team was very respectful of our property and cleaned up every night. Israel followed up with me daily to make sure I was satisfied. My overall experience with this company was outstanding! My deck is strong and it looks great. We are now ready for our party! I would definitely use this company again.

We had an issue where the previous homeowners built their deck around the pool cover mechanism of the pool. Needed an access point created to get to it. Andrew Scott Builders did a great and quality job creating that access point. Went above and beyond. Would highly recommend again for future projects!

Actually we had a great experience with S&G Construction. They put the front porch at my house. Skilled workers, excellent price and great job. I certainly will call on them for any future concrete work needs and I recommend them.

Matt did an excellent job on my porch! He had to blend the new with the old and did so brilliantly. Went way out of his way to tend to stufff in the way (landscape, sprinkler heads) and to top it all made a small step for the dog door. Great to work with, does all the work himself and stayed at estimate.

Owen and Brandon built redwood railing for the front and back porch, painted it to match the trim, poured a short concrete path from the back porch to the lawn and built stairs from the concrete to the back porch. They made a good first impression when, unable to make the appointment on time, called ahead of time and rescheduled it for later in the day! I like professionals that respect my time as well. The project was completed in four days and looks great! I would hire them again and refer them to friends. The carpenters are positive and easy to work with!

From the moment I met with Mike D'Angelo to discuss a deck replacement on a home I was planning to purchase, I had a pretty strong feeling he was honest, knowledgeable and competent. I since learned he can do pretty much any project from the ground up and he and his crew just finished replacing my marble tile flooring with hardwoods, reconfiguring a 3-way gas fireplace including new stonework and taking out some corner and over-the staircase shelving units. I didn't give him much lead time but he was able to make everything happen within my time frame. He listened carefully to what I was looking for and came up with some great suggestions that I ended up using. He also proved to be a one-stop shop and whatever I thought of doing, he either could get it done or knew someone else who could. I highly recommend using Mike and All Universal. I have already signed up for a painting project and plan to use his services for my deck replacement in the spring.

John has done a great job building our fence and installing 2 gates on our deck. He goes above and beyond what other would do to make sure the job is done right. He has been very easy to work with. Our fence looks great and we would absolutely hire him again.

I am Nels Sostrom and had Les do some work for me around the yard at my place at 615 Oakhurst Drive in Cheyenne, Wyoming. I was really impressed and satisfied with the work Les did taking down the old fence around the back yard and replacing it. The new fence was very well build using deck screws rather than nails. He replaced the 4x4 posts with treated posts into concrete, connecting them together with 2x4 stringers to which he attached the vertical picket slats with rust proof screws. I was also impressed of how Les replaced the old utility shed with a new and larger shed. In one short day he cut the roof off the old shed into sections and placed it into the dumpster. Then he cut the rest of the old shed into pieces and placed that into the dumpster. The old shed had a concrete floor and short footing. The ground around the footing had filled up until water would run into the floor area. Les designed the new shed for which he had obvious experience. Rather than using the old foundation as it was originally intended he ingenuously build a new foundation setting on top of the old foundation using treated timbers. The new shed is a beauty. It is much more useful. Tall enough to stand up in and with much more storage. I like barn look with hipped roof with shingles. Les is very nice to work with. He is easy to talk to and works very efficiently and cleaned up nicely after the work was done

We just had a major deck addition added to our house by Denco Construction, and couldn't be more pleased with how it turned out and with the work performed by Ro, Josh, and crew. Ro was great to work with, providing us with a 3D image of the finished product, as well as working directly with the county for permits and with an engineer for structural integrity signoff (we are putting a hot tub on the upper deck). We felt the work was top notch and that Ro addressed any questions or concerns we had along the way. He was polite and professional, his price was very reasonable for the work performed, and he added some artistic touches that make the decks look amazing. We replaced a window in our bedroom with a sliding door and Denco built a catwalk from the new door to around the corner, where our hot tub will be located. Not only do we have fantastic views of the foothills from this vantage point, but the craftsmanship is also a sight to behold. We highly recommend Denco for any deck building or repair needs. Very precise work, top notch craftsmanship, and at a reasonable price. We are very pleased! Dave and Teri Bruce Littleton, CO

Pros: The over job was done in a quick manner, no pressure to pay until the job was complete, quick responses during the job when emailed, flexible, and an excellent price that beats to competition. During the middle of the project we requested a garden fence be installed. The company was open tot the changes and installed a garden fence to our specific requirements that looks great! Cons: Old screws were scattered on the ground not picked up and a panel had to be redone because the old pickets were used from the old fence. Overall, this was a good experience and the company fixed the cons before payment was received. We will use this company agin in the future to repair our deck.

I hired Brett to build a small deck off my house. He was super responsive. Explained everything that he was going to do very clearly. He originally estimated the job to take four days, but ended up completing it ahead of schedule! When I got from work the day it was finished, everything was cleaned up and I would never have known he was here except for my beautiful new deck. Would absolutely recommend hiring him!

Remove, repair, repurpose! In the last year Alex Sachanko has completed several jobs in my yard that have been needing to be done but are not within my wheelhouse. I had an old wood deck off my back porch that he tore down. He even clean up the debris that had fallen through the cracks for decades. Then Alex repaired my six foot fence by replacing three broken fence posts with metal post. His long term project was the tear down and building of a new shed from the concrete slab up! The finished shed is almost camouflaged in the corner of the yard which Alex accomplished by repurposing some old fencing I had laying in the yard as siding for the new shed. All of these projects improved the look, feel and value of my property. Thanks for the great craftsmanship, Alex!

David provided one of the easiest and most satisfactory experiences I've ever had with a contractor. David is a nice, easy-going guy who was responsive to my need to have a deck replaced before tenants were to move in soon. His price was completely fair, he was easy with which to communicate, and he followed through on everything he promised. The deck he build for us was of high quality and he and his team got it done in 1 day. I will most definitely be calling Sawdust & Stone Builders for my future project needs.

My deck is BEAUTIFUL! Every day, Casey cleaned up, showed up, worked a full day, kept me updated, accommodated changes and answered many questions. The contract was clear, concise. Friendly, professional, didn't have strangers walking all over my property, helped me find other tradespeople and took care of arranging meetings with them when necessary. A great building experience! Have recommended him to family members with full confidence. Thank you!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
