I have been working with Kyle for about 2 months, and she has been great. I came to see her after unsuccessfully attempting to move forward in a relationship where trust had been broken. She helped me come up with specific strategies and tools to sort through my negative thought patterns regarding the situation. She is very knowledgeable, direct and compassionate which I have found extremely helpful with this situation. I would definitely recommend Kyle as a counselor to help work through relationship or other issues when you just haven't been successful on your own.

I am so grateful that my husband and I were referred to Dan when we were searching for a couple's counselor. He is a truly gifted therapist, and he has helped me so much personally as well as improving my marriage. My husband and I have recommended Dan to many of our friends, and we will continue doing so.

My partner and I were in crisis mode and needed help. I contacted a list of therapists. Laura was the only one who actually called me. From my 15 minute phone consultation with her I could tell she was it. She related to me in such a natural, real life way and responded with the appropriate level of urgency. She is a gifted therapist who has done incredible work with myself and my partner. I could not have found a more perfect fit.

Coly has a practical, approachable, calm, and sensitive way of making sense of trauma. And a pracitcal, approachable, calm, and sensitive way of making sense of the wires that can get crossed, in a person's head, when trauma has occurred. His patience, clear insight, and respectful approach were invaluable to me as I dug through the layers of my psyche/habits/trauma. The safe space he created helped allow a fluid conversation, and a place for the mess to be, without judging it. I absolutely recommend him, and the services he is offering.

Mr Anderson was a fantastic marriage counselor! My wife and I are doing better now and a lot of it was because of the things he made us talk about together that we were avoiding. He helped us to talk about the things we were avoiding in ways that were comfortable so that we could fix them. He pushed us at times but not in an angry or aggressive ways. He made us work which was good for us. His office was easy to find and the building is nice. Parking was pretty easy too . The close spots were usually all gone (aren't they always) but there were spots close enough that it wasn't a pain to walk.

I have known Liza for several years. She had been our family, marriage, parenting, individual, therapist for a couple of those years. Her down to earth, practical, solid biblical approach to her active therapy style was truly a God send for us. We had been through a few other counselors over the course of 10 years. Liza was able to establish what our families needs were, and was able to teach us the tools we needed to build up our parenting skills and help us with a deeper understanding of our marriage structure in a year and a half. Liza touched on things that were never brought up before and really had us doing some internal work and walking some roads that were hard but very effective. The skills and knowledge that we gained from our experience with her are are really priceless and such a deep blessing. Granted, our family was willing to do the work, but she guided us with Gods word the whole way through. I would highly recommend her to you. Her gift of empathy truly spoke to our hearts and helped us through the hardest most traumatizing events in our lives. My family was able to heal and come out of this stronger and more solid then we had prayed for.

I felt that Anne genuinely cared about me and my problems. I have talked to other counselors and none were as helpful as she was. Some childhood experiences at home and at school were holding me back much more than I realized and I am over 65. I would highly recommend Anne to anyone young or older.

Last year after having gone through many difficult experiences, I knew I needed professional help to guide me though . In desperation, I googled the Ten Top Counselors i Aurora . RJ Handley was the first to respond. He seemed to have an intuitive sense of the causes and solutions of each issue we dealt with. Over 5 decades of meeting with several Counselors, he was unlike any I’d met. He listened compassionately, didn’t let me ramble or rehearse the past (something I’d already done too much of) so we were able to quickly focus on the situation at hand, using appropriate and effective homework. He helped me gain many new insights. I saw progress almost immediately and was able to deal with heretofore hopeless problems , in ways that made so much sense. I am able now to use the principles I learned on a regular basis. I would highly recommend him to anyone who is struggling with hard-to-solve problems or who simply needs clarification and guidance in making decisions.

I have been meeting with Ilsa for about two and a half years. She has been a huge part of my personal growth. I have seen a few therapists in my life, and she is by far been the most help to me. She has taken a lot of time and care in getting to know me, and has always gone an extra mile for me mental health. I don't think I would be where I'm at today without her help. I have already recommended her to friends, and will continue to wholeheartedly do so.

I must admit I was initially skeptical about the idea of couples counseling to begin with- I had a few previous experiences with mediators and counselors that left me feeling misunderstood and like it was a waste of my time. This was definitely NOT the case without Andrew. He was kind, understanding, and was able to cut to the heart of our issues almost immediately and help us to really talk to one another about how we felt. He also gave us homework which was easy to implement and has made a world of difference already- I highly recommend!

My association with David started 4 years ago and he has helped me to overcome many life long obstacles I have been dealing with. I have had other counselors in my life, but until I met David I did not feel I was getting anywhere. His passion, dedication and emotion along with listening to his clients leads to understanding and methods that he has helped me to establish within myself, allowing me to forgive my past and grow to who I am today. As a man this has been a huge step for me. I have encouraged friends and family to contact David and I feel he has become a lifeline for them also. Let David become your lifeline.

My daughter and I have been counseling with Sharon for about two years. She has helped my daughter cope with anxiety over a narcissistic father. Sharon has encouraged my daughter to write a book about tips for kids/parents that go through a divorce. Sharon counsels in a way that makes you feel very comfortable to share. She speaks with truth, compassion, and sincerity. She's a great encourager and you feel empowered to handle any situation after a session!

Tracy started working with my daughter about a 1 1/2 year ago. When Tracy first started my daughter had poor self-esteem and confidence issues, or so I thought. She would sleep all of the time, had poor grades at school (D and F student) and was constantly struggling with many of the issues that high school and being a teenage girl can present. My daughter had been extremely abused by her birth mother in what has been described as "the worst abuse that I have heard of in my 26 years of being a counselor!" Long story short because of Tracy's skill and compassion my daughter now has a 3.5 GPA!!! My daughter is thriving, happy and looking forward to a bright future!!! As we wrapped up a session a few weeks ago she thanked Tracy for saving her life. She then went onto explain that until her counseling with Tracy that she was obsessed with and was actively planning on taking her life. What a blow!!!!! I was clueless and here she saved my little girls life!!!! I will sing her praises as long and loud as I can!!! Because of Tracy's skill, understanding, compassion, hard work and follow through my daughter’s life has been transformed. She now is all smiles, vibrant, glowing and excited about life and her future. While we know that there is still much work to be done, we have been taught the skills and methods to work through issues as they come to the surface in the future. How can we ever repay her? Sincerely, Clueless Dad

I had been having some personal issues with depression and anxiety due to an ongoing issue with my family, as well as health problems. Tiffany has helped me to confront these issues with myself first and also to set healthy boundaries with my family. Because of her, I am doing so much better. I am no longer feeling depressed and I have learned some coping skills that are helping with my anxiety. I am happy that I was able to do all this with the help of my wonderful counselor and without any medication. We have been meeting once or twice a week and I will continue to see her. She has truly helped me have a better quality of life and I highly recommend her services. Thank you so much Tiffany!

      What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

      • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
      • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
      • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
      • Overcoming addictions.
      • Managing chronic illness.
      • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

      • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
      • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
      • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
      • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
      • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
      • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
      • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
      • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
      • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
      • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
      • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
      • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
      • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
      • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
      • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
      • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
      • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
      • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
      • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

      How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.
