"Emily’s cleaning services I would say is the absolute best cleaning service I have ever used in my private home in my life! Emily and Barbara came to our home and cleaned everything from floor to ceiling. Windows, window panes, baseboards, floors, walls, doors etc. etc. etc. Not only did the house look clean it smelled clean. My husband has been sneezing for months first thing in the morning we thought it was allergies. Turns out it was because I had dust in the house I wasn’t even aware of, since Emily and Barbara have come out to the house he’s not sneezing anymore the dust is gone our house is spic and span spotless clean! We have a contract with Emily and are so looking forward to her next visit to our home! I highly recommend Emily’s cleaning service to anyone whether it be in your private home or your office! We are so looking forward to her next visit to our home! I highly recommend Emily‘s cleaning service to anyone whether it be in your private home or your office! Sincerely, Lynn S. Lakewood, Co."

"Brendyn has been cleaning my house for close to a year. It is the best gift I have ever given myself to have her come clean my house and give me a break. As a working mother of two, I need all the help I can get keeping my house clean and Brendyn gives very reasonable rates and LISTENS to what I need done. She doesn't just come in and do whatever she thinks is best, she works with you to know what you want done in your house. I am a picky person, and Brendyn listens to every little thing I want and does it--down to organizing my shoes! She also works with you to find your pet peeves about what doesn't flow right in your house and has SOLUTIONS. I have often been frustrated and have not had any answers because I live in the problem and she has had a great, simple and easy solution. (Ask her about command centers.) Lastly, she's not only a house cleaner but also a jack of all trades. She picks up my house remodeling projects where I leave off and is basically also a general contractor for home projects. Brendyn makes my life easier and I would recommend any busy family take her help because it is worth: every. damn. dollar."

"Janae did an excellent job. Arrived on time and performs all duties as asked. In addition, she was able to organize my closet exactly the way I had asked. She was able to go thru a pile of paperwork without to much instruction. One of the times she came to the house (it was a disaster as I had to run out of town last minute) and when I came back everything was in its place with no instructions. It was wonderful! Overall my experience is always quite pleasant and above satisfactory. I truly recommend her services whether you need a deep, quick clean or help organizing your home. Either way, she is a great at what she does!"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is upholstery cleaning?

From your carpets to your drapes to your furniture, all fabrics need to be cleaned. Cleaning upholstery, or the fabric on your furniture, removes the dirt and oils that are transferred to couches and chairs through regular use. Because furniture upholstery can be delicate and colors can fade easily, it’s often a good idea to let professional sofa cleaners handle the job. They’ll determine the type of fabric — usually cotton, linen, wool, suede or microfiber — and the appropriate method for cleaning it, either steam-cleaning or applying a dry-cleaning solvent. In general, cleaning an entire piece of furniture includes a pretreatment, cleaning, and neutralizing rinse to the body, plus removing and cleaning all cushions and cleaning all crevices.

An upholstery cleaner may clean the entire piece of furniture, on a regular schedule or by request, or do spot treatments to remove pet, food, drink, or oil and grease stains. Furniture can also be deodorized to remove the smell of pets or tobacco smoke. Furniture that’s used often, like that in your family room, should be cleaned once a year to keep it fresh and extend its life. Sofa cleaners often also offer repair services to mend tears in fabric or patch holes in leather.

How often should carpets be steam cleaned?

Dirty carpets can be unhealthy for the people living in the home, particularly those who have allergies, so it’s important to have them cleaned regularly; simply vacuuming once or twice a week isn’t enough. Carpet cleaning should be done by a professional carpet cleaning service at least once a year to remove grime and help extend the life of your carpet. Most carpet manufacturers recommend professional steam cleaning, which penetrates deep into the carpet fibers and lifts out both dirt and the pollutants that get tracked inside. Steam cleaning also removes most of the moisture, so carpets dry quickly enough for homeowners to resume using them the same day. Between professional carpet cleanings, your carpet may need an emergency spot cleaning. Pet accidents, food or drink spills, and more can often be effectively cleaned with some water and a drop of white vinegar, although many cleaners will also make house calls for smaller spills and hard-to-clean spots like wine or grease stains.

How can I get my grout clean?

Dirt, mildew and grime can make your grout lines look downright tragic. If you have the ability, DIY tile and grout cleaning is definitely doable. Your main obstacles are time, project size, availability of the right materials and effort. Your first step in tile and grout cleaning is making sure the surface area is cleaned of basic dirt and buildup and wiped down. Be sure not to use a bleach-based cleaning agent, which could react dangerously with the vinegar used in later steps.

Depending on the delicacy of your tile and grout, it may be wise to start with water and friction before proceeding to a cleaning solution. In the shower you can spray the area while brushing gently, or use a spray bottle filled with warm water on countertops or floors. If water won’t do the trick, try a solution of equal parts warm water and white vinegar, and repeat the gentle brushing motion. This combination should begin to lift dirt and grime from the grout. For additional tile and grout cleaning power, baking soda applied directly to grout lines and sprayed with your water vinegar solution can help suds off sticky grime. If your DIY cleaning solutions aren’t doing the trick, store-bought sprays and pastes may have more cleansing power. Rinse thoroughly after cleaning and enjoy your sparkling clean grout.

Tile and grout cleaning supplies include:

  • Old standard or electric toothbrush
  • Stiff bristle brush
  • Spray bottle
  • White vinegar
  • Commercial grout cleaner

How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Hiring a professional house cleaning service is a helpful way to have a healthy home even when your work and personal schedule is packed. House cleaning prices vary based on how many square feet your home is, how dirty your house gets, and how often the cleaning service comes. Some companies charge a set amount — such as 5 cents — per square foot, with a minimum amount, such as $100. The national average cost for house cleaning ranges between $110 and $150. Prices can be lower in areas with a lower cost of living, higher in big cities or affluent regions. You may save money by increasing the frequency of your house cleaning visits. Often a company will charge you less per cleaning when you schedule more cleanings per month. The cost advantage rewards your loyalty, and also reflects the fact that more frequent cleanings make it easier to maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home. A housecleaning service may charge more for the first visit or for one-time services than for recurring cleanings.

How much does it cost to deep clean a house?

Deep cleaning a house goes beyond the surface level to clear out the dust, grime and gunk that’s collecting on the fan blades, hiding in the blinds, and built up inside the refrigerator drawers. Deep cleaning of a home or apartment costs more than regular house cleaning because it takes more time, effort, and cleaning products. You may choose to have a deep cleaning once or several times a year in addition to your standard cleaning services. You may have a one-time deep cleaning to prepare for company or to clean after a house party. Companies may charge an hourly rate or a price per square foot, or may offer you a flat rate after they have visited your home and estimated work time. The national average house cleaning price is $110-$150, with rates ranging higher for deep-cleaning services. Here are some examples of how a company may calculate their deep-cleaning prices:

  • 10 cents per square foot (compared with 5 cents per square foot for standard house cleaning).
  • $300 for a 3,000-square-foot home.
  • $25 per hour per worker for deep-cleaning services.
