The contractor correctly diagnosed that the reason my gutters were leaking is the drip edge was on the top of the underlayment and the underlayment needed to be on top of the drip edge. He was honest and told me the underlayment needed to be fixed all the way around the roof and he didn't have time that day so he charged me a reduced rate for just doing the inspection. I contacted my roofing company and they sent someone out to fix it at no cost to me so I was very happy to benefit from the contractors expertise! The contractor was late to our appointment though otherwise I would have given him 5 stars.

I originally hired KMA to do some work on my gutters, but it ended up that the job required a contractor. He was very gracious and actually came out two times to verify if he could do it, and did not bill me. I found this to be very honest and refreshing.

I hired David for a few projects last summer when we were doing a bunch of updating. First he extended our gas line to the kitchen for our new gas range. He also replaced the A/C and then installed a new sink for us as well. His team was great--very friendly, professional and considerate. Some contractors seem like they want to get it done and get out, but they were obviously invested in doing it right and they responded to every special request we made. When the range didn't quite fit the gas line, David even came back to adjust it and did not charge for it. And he stayed in touch with me to make sure we got the A/C warranty stuff done right. I'll contact him again when we need help.

Josiah made time within his busy schedule to fit me in and repair a plumbing issue with the ice maker in my refrigerator. Since it has been a recurring problem I asked him if he could repair it in a way that would provide a permanent solution.Josiah is skilled and experienced enough to provide a well thought out and permanent repair within a couple of hours. Rates were very reasonable and I would not hesitate to work with him in the future. I am comfortable recommending him for plumbing and repair/remodeling issues.

Mr. Jerry Secrest was a miracle for my project. I had a contractor previously hang some paintings and mirrors for my client, and they made several nail holes in hanging one particular item. In repairing and re-texturing the nail holes, the contractor messed up my client's wall. I, then, hired another contractor to repair the mistakes incurred by the previous contractor, but the contractor called me an hour before the scheduled appointment and needed to reschedule the appointment for another day. My client needed the repairs done that day, so I could not reschedule. I called Jerry and he was able to come that day. When Jerry came, he was very professional and kind in his approach. He made certain to bring blankets to cover my client's floor. He explained everything that he was doing to cover up the mistakes of the previous contractor, and repaint the wall. He meticulously patched, textured over existing repairs. He worked diligently the entire time that he was at my client's home. His work quality is superb- he practically gave my client a brand new perfect wall. He was punctual; I appreciated that he came at the same exact time that he communicated he will come.

Hire This company! Hire Jake & his brother! I had the nightmare of nightmare general contractors come into my home and leave it in shambles. The electrical was left dangerously disorganized. Jake and his brother showed up and worked around the clock to make sure the whole house was 100% safe and ready to go for me and my family. It feels great knowing people like Jake have your back and will make your home safe secure modern and functioning exactly as you like. I’ll use these guys again and again. Thanks for your work guys! We had a leak in our upstairs bathroom that went down to the main level so we needed a bathroom remodel and new drywall and texture in our dinning room. They tile work was great and everything looked good when they had finished. I do wish there was better communication on when people were coming and going for the day.

Patina Build is the BEST!!! I had a small job that other contractors were not even interested in my project. David and Ian have huge respect for people's homes. It has been hard to find someone who has a high level of craftsmanship and appreciation for detail. They had it all! I would use them a million more times!

Did a great job and was available right away. Project was completed well. Was on time and was very honest about materials being less expensive then the original quote and charging me accordingly which I felt was something hard to find these days. Would absolutely recommend and hire again for future projects. Job site was cleaned afterwords as well.

I've had several remodels done at my home and have never met a more pleasant, PROFESSIONAL individual as Eric Schaefer, owner of A & E Remodeling. He did not give a quote and then charge us more (and more!); he and his crew were always on time; they did not start the job and then leave ... even for a few days; they completed the work within the time frame quoted; the work itself was impeccable, with an eye for detail; AND they cleaned up the job site every single day before they left! I've found this to be rare in the construction/remodeling field and it definitely didn't go unnoticed OR unappreciated! I plan to use them for future projects, as well as refer them any chance I get! James and Gina responded very quickly and came out for an estimate. James has very good ideas and is very engaging. He has MANY years of experience and is very knowledgeable. While he came out for our kitchen we discussed deck designs! He is very professional and his company can handle any job. He is well versed in trending styles and designs. The estimate was right in line with other contractors. An excellent family-run/owned company.

I have had bad contractors at my home before, and these guys set the bar for me. They delivered on time, exactly what they promised, and for less than Aaron had quoted me. He said he over estimated and actually refunded me a little! Amazing service from some great guys. Any project I do will have Vigil and son on it. Thanks again guys!!

We hired LSE Builders to finish our existing basement. Overall, I can’t say enough good things about Steven the owner and Chris the project manager, as well as all the suppliers and contractors they work with. To start with, the whole process was very transparent and they use technology effectively in order to share all the bids, invoices, and receipts. Secondly, they performed amazingly well given our aggressive timeframe. Even with delays from the city, they finished the entire project in well under 3 months as promised. This is especially impressive given the very busy time contractors are having right now in the Boulder area. The finished product includes two additional bedrooms, a rec room, and a full bathroom. The finishing touches, in particular, turned out very well… the tile work, the carpentry, the lighting, etc. The project went very well and exceeded our expectations. Steven and Chris were both very professional and never hesitated to address any concerns we had. We highly recommend LSE!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
