I have been working with Kyle for about 2 months, and she has been great. I came to see her after unsuccessfully attempting to move forward in a relationship where trust had been broken. She helped me come up with specific strategies and tools to sort through my negative thought patterns regarding the situation. She is very knowledgeable, direct and compassionate which I have found extremely helpful with this situation. I would definitely recommend Kyle as a counselor to help work through relationship or other issues when you just haven't been successful on your own.

I am so grateful that my husband and I were referred to Dan when we were searching for a couple's counselor. He is a truly gifted therapist, and he has helped me so much personally as well as improving my marriage. My husband and I have recommended Dan to many of our friends, and we will continue doing so.

My partner and I were in crisis mode and needed help. I contacted a list of therapists. Laura was the only one who actually called me. From my 15 minute phone consultation with her I could tell she was it. She related to me in such a natural, real life way and responded with the appropriate level of urgency. She is a gifted therapist who has done incredible work with myself and my partner. I could not have found a more perfect fit.

Good counselor. I felt comfortable and felt like she knew what she was doing. They say they specialize in marriage counseling and it shows. She really knew what she was talking about and didn't seem surprised when we talked about certain things. Really helpful.

For many years, I searched for inner peace and healing, attending workshops and seminars and reading many books that resonated at the time. I came to understand that the answers I sought could only be found within and yet I did not know how to proceed with a practice that would assist in a different way from all the other paths I attempted to integrate. I have chosen to work with Coly Vulpiani, partnering with him to co-create a new way of being which I practice daily to strengthen (participation in tele-classes, personal consultations, week-end gatherings). Words are really inadequate to explain the goodness this has brought to my life. I can now find a stillness within that I had searched for, for many years. The patience and wisdom that Coly brings through, with his unique use of Voice Dialogue and other teachings, have to be experienced to be believed. I will always be ever so grateful for having the courage to make that first phone call to access Coly's gracious complimentary consultation. Now, moving forward mostly on my own, it's heartwarming to be with even the briefest moments of peacefulness of heart, understanding that this way of being can deepen.

Ilsa is a wonderful therapist. Throughout my adult life, I've had several therapists but none of them compare to Ilsa. She really listens to your issues and concerns wholeheartedly and offers well thought out and helpful responses. I feel 100% comfortable with her, as if I'm speaking with a friend whom I've known for a long time. For the past few months, I've been in a transitional time in my life, Ilsa has been there every step of the way guiding and advising me. Helping me to figure out how to take the next step and always encouraging me to move forward and push myself. I've recommended Ilsa to multiple friends and will continue to recommend her and use her services for years to come.

Tracy started working with my daughter about a 1 1/2 year ago. When Tracy first started my daughter had poor self-esteem and confidence issues, or so I thought. She would sleep all of the time, had poor grades at school (D and F student) and was constantly struggling with many of the issues that high school and being a teenage girl can present. My daughter had been extremely abused by her birth mother in what has been described as "the worst abuse that I have heard of in my 26 years of being a counselor!" Long story short because of Tracy's skill and compassion my daughter now has a 3.5 GPA!!! My daughter is thriving, happy and looking forward to a bright future!!! As we wrapped up a session a few weeks ago she thanked Tracy for saving her life. She then went onto explain that until her counseling with Tracy that she was obsessed with and was actively planning on taking her life. What a blow!!!!! I was clueless and here she saved my little girls life!!!! I will sing her praises as long and loud as I can!!! Because of Tracy's skill, understanding, compassion, hard work and follow through my daughter’s life has been transformed. She now is all smiles, vibrant, glowing and excited about life and her future. While we know that there is still much work to be done, we have been taught the skills and methods to work through issues as they come to the surface in the future. How can we ever repay her? Sincerely, Clueless Dad

My association with David started 4 years ago and he has helped me to overcome many life long obstacles I have been dealing with. I have had other counselors in my life, but until I met David I did not feel I was getting anywhere. His passion, dedication and emotion along with listening to his clients leads to understanding and methods that he has helped me to establish within myself, allowing me to forgive my past and grow to who I am today. As a man this has been a huge step for me. I have encouraged friends and family to contact David and I feel he has become a lifeline for them also. Let David become your lifeline.

We worked with Charlotte to complete our pre-marital counseling. She was great to work with. She made both of us feel comfortable and did a good job facilitating our conversations and asking good questions. She was very professional and even recommended other resources to check out. I would highly recommend working with Charlotte if you are looking for a counselor.

Joy embodies a wisdom that far surpasses her years. As a healer, she has what really counts: heart. She holds a loving and compassionate space that's perfect for transformational guidance. In the two sessions I have had with her, I was struck by her ability to tune into what was going on inside of me. She knew when to step in and offer assistance, and when to just be with me as things unfolded. Highly recommended!

Hilary is a remarkable counselor! She made me feel comfortable from the very beginning, which allowed me to open up and TELL THE TRUTH (even the ugly parts) about my relationship issues. After just one session with her, I started feeling empowered and inspired to create positive change in my marriage -- and it just keeps getting better (both the counseling and the relationship). RUN to work with her!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

    • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
    • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
    • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
    • Overcoming addictions.
    • Managing chronic illness.
    • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

    • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
    • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
    • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
    • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
    • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
    • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
    • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
    • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
    • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
    • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
    • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
    • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
    • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
    • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
    • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
    • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
    • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
    • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
    • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

    How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.
