Mark was fantastic! Handyman is definitely the right term for this man. I initially hired him to pick up a couple of heavy items to be dropped off for recycle. He ended up fixing the drawers in my large wall unit. When I told him how I couldn't get a company to come out to pick up many donations before I was flying out, he offered to drive the inventory to the donation warehouse. This really helped me out and I appreciated everything he did for me. He even mailed the receipt to me in Germany. Use this guy, he is the best!

I didn't even hire Cory and I'm giving him 5 stars. He promptly called me to discuss the job I had posted, and took the time to explain that there were less expensive alternatives that I could do myself. He even gave me some tips on how to do a good job on my own. I truly appreciated his honesty and willingness to share his expertise. If I ever do need a handyman in the future, Cory will be the first person I call.

Matt did a great job for us on a couple of repairs including reinstalling hinges and re-mounting of a rather large oven hood cover panel. We also had a garage door that was barely having on its hinges, preventing the door from closing. He was able to reinforce the hinges and the door now closes better than it ever has. Would highly recommend Lexi-Assist Handyman services.

Gilbert did an amazing job! I hired him to do some handyman jobs around my house and when I saw that he also installed flooring I really put him to work! We had bamboo floors installed less than a year ago and the installation was done very poorly. Gilbert fixed many major problems with the floor including huge gaps between the boards. The company that installed them wouldn't return my calls and when my realtor was finally able to get them to come out he basically said I can slap a bandaid on it and call it good. Gilbert actually fixed it! He did what a major installation company in town couldn't do. He got back to me right away, was punctual, professional and he worked late into the evening to make sure the job was done right and completed. He also installed a new toilet and fixed a major problem with a shower panel. His prices were more than reasonable! I actually paid him more than what he charged because of the amount and quality of work he did on such short notice. Our house was up for sale and these things made the difference to the point that the house was on the market only 4 days before we got an offer and we're under contract for more than asking price! You cannot go wrong hiring Gilbert!

Stuart is great. He installed a new faucet and drain in our bathroom as well as re-plumbed an old clawfoot tub. He'll get the job done and try to save you money along the way, which is awesome. He's also a perfectionist, which I appreciated as well. I'd hire him again as a handyman. Thanks Stuart!

I had a hole in the living room ceiling; water damage from a winter storm. Trent assessed the damage, recommended a repair and quickly resolved the situation. Trent is the best at cleaning up after completing the work. I had to do nothing after he left. I will definitely use Trent for other handyman jobs in the future.

Tom did a great job repairing and staining our fence. He had great suggestions for how to implement the work, gave an accurate estimate of the time it would take, and is very thorough and meticulous. And he is a very nice and respectful person. We will definitely hire him again next time we have a home repair project.

Shawn is a pleasant, competent professional. He tackled my repair job with a quick, thorough assessment. He had everything with him that he needed to do the repairs efficiently and effectively. He organized his work and never missed a beat until he was done. And, he was willing to take up another related job right afterward, completing it quickly. His rates are competitive in Denver's overheated handyman world. And Shawn did all this with a smile and with respect for his customer. I will definitely have him at the top of my list to call the next time.

Wait, seriously, go no further! Scot with prime handyman is who you want to hire! I’m telling you! I hired Scot just to paint the interior of my home, yet after a nightmare experience with a general contractor who left my home unfinished, Scot handled it all! He literally finished everything the other guy didn’t, basically became my new General Contractor to help me out, took over the whole project, got it all done in a timely manner, was there to consult as well as doing the work, didn’t even flinch when more work was needed to do to fix the other guys mistakes, then painted the place beautifully, and left my home better then how I imagined. This guys the real deal. Now and again you get an amazing find on thumbtack of someone you know you’ll always call from now on for work, Scot with Prime Handyman is it!! Truly great experience. He will impress you for sure!

Jim and his Crew do excellent work. We have been looking for contractors, builders, finishers and all kinds of people to hire to finish our basement, and we ended up going with Jim and Integrity Remodeling. Are we glad we did!! Jim does most all the work himself with his own employee which saved us on having to hire a contractor and pay them to hire out other companies to complete the job in pieces. With Jim and his employee, we knew who we were getting, he talked to us everyday and kept us up to date on the process, and is very easy to talk to. He gives great recommendations and sure does know what he is doing. I recommend him to anyone who is looking for a basement finish, remodel, service or anything of that nature. We plan to use him to help us with our upstairs remodel now!! Thanks Jim!!!

Clint was great! We originally contracted him to install four bike rack hooks - ended up installing five. He was really patient and provided great insight working with the confines of our cozy garage. He even ended up fixing our garage light, which wasn’t even on the list, but was driving me insane every day - so thankful he brought it up, it’s like he read my mind. :)

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
