Harry's communication was excellent, responded within two hours to each contact. We hired Harry to fix a leak in our double-bowl kitchen sink. He quickly isolated the problem, and repaired it. He was knowledgeable, efficient, neat and polite. Very "husband-for-hire", I felt comfortable having him in our home. My husband asked him to fix a problem with one of our garage door openers. Once again, he isolated the problem, solved it and fixed it. His price was lower than he quoted (first visit and quote were no charge) and very, very reasonable. Overall, outstanding experience with Harry, we will be calling again and again.Thank you, Harry!

We hired Marty to replace a damaged faucet, fix our capped pipping, repair damaged wood framing, and replace and patch the drywall in our master bedroom. All in a single day. He did an excellent and meticulous job on the bathroom, and the new faucet works great. The wall was closed up, and Marty even had time to take a look at our garage door opener, which had been malfunctioning for quite some time. The value you get for Marty's time is great. If you have any odds-and-ends around the house that need fixing, don't hesitate to give Marty Klein a try. You won't be disappointed.

Thorough, high quality, attention to detail, friendly, timely and excellently priced...these are just some of the qualities of Thiago Pelisson and his team! I was searching for a contractor to power wash and paint/stain house, decks and porch for my mother. She is not accustomed to hiring and as a widow and senior citizen, she was anxious about the finding/hiring process. Her house has cedar shingles, many damaged due to weather & woodpeckers! I contacted Thiago and he promptly got back to me to set up time to meet my mom & see the house to provide an estimate. My mom was SO impressed! Thiago was friendly and took time to take thorough look at the home. He listened to my mom, answered questions and gave her a great sense of comfort and confidence. He provided a detailed quote that including carpenter work, power washing, and materials at excellent price. His team arrived and they were all friendly, efficient, hard working and quality work! The prep work they did on the house to ensure paint didn't get on windows, doors, even the doorbell went WAY beyond expectations! Attention to detail was incredible - every nook was covered. Thiago came to the home twice during the project (approximately 4 days for all phases) to ensure quality. He even had carpenter return to fix area on chimney that she didn't even know had rotted - and he didn't jack up the price to have it done. The house looks great and it was a relief to trust Thiago and his crew. I've recommended him to friends, as has my mom and will hire him again without hesitation!

These guys are great. Would highly recommend. We got home after a trip, and our daughter locked a bedroom door (we lost the key) We found this out at 8:45PM. I called Sure Lock & Key, a gentleman was in Westport in 20 mins, and had the door unlocked in less than a minute. Again, great experience with Sure Lock & Key.

I hired Carlos to finish tape, sand, and paint my garage ceiling and walls. He gave me a fair price, showed up on the day he said he would and stayed on the job until it was finished. His work was top notch and he was very accommodating of any special needs that I asked for. He responded to e-mails right away and always kept me informed of status.

I called Bob because my garage was a disaster area that the entire family was too scared to even step into. Bob was brave. He dove into a disaster zone and courageously chipped away at it for hours -- determined and uncomplaining -- and this was a hard project. He sorted everything, cleaned, organized and found creative solutions. On top of that he is a sweet, lovely, considerate guy who is a joy to have around. I can't recommend him more highly, and will be calling him soon to help with other projects. Yay Bob for changing our lives in a day. Our garage is no longer the 7th circle of Hell, it is the best it could possibly be, thanks to your courage and determination!

I do not even know where to start. If Bruce lived in a different time he would have been a Renaissance man. He possesses a masterful blend of artistry and intellect. The first project he did for us was to redo a simple laundry room. This entailed making templates and installing granite for a counter with a sink and a making a folding table/counter. He had to repair some sheet rock and repaint the room. The results were impressive. The second job he did was design and build a workbench for my art studio. His architectural renderings were impressive. He measured the length of my arms to insure I was able to reach the peg board behind the work bench. He thought to install a length of electrical outlets beneath the lip of the bench. The side drawers are easily opened and closed and the paper trays are large enough to hold my watercolor paper. He is extremely meticulous and his work shows this. He installed glass doors in the basement studio to allow more light to enter the area. When this wasn't sufficient, he cut through the concrete and installed a window (with molding and a sill). His masterpiece was the deck he built for us. With Bruce's skill and our artistic input he produced a showpiece deck. The three tiered deck allows for minimal visual obstruction of the woods below. He installed tiny lights on the stairs to make them safer in the evening. He thought of these. He made a portion of the deck curved to provide harmony with the landscaping. Again, his renderings were precise and impressive. He laid everything out carefully and was always thinking ahead. Our deck is magnificent. He handled all the paperwork for the permits as well. On a smaller scale Bruce hung paintings, our TV, glass doors leading to a bonus room, fixed all our leaky faucets and provided names when we needed a generator and a water softening system installed. Bruce is one of a kind in that he is masterful in so many areas and knows when to get a consult. He is prompt and ready to work hard. He put in very long hours, cleaned up and just did amazing work. I still look forward to having him finish an upstairs loft, a bathroom in our studio and build a space for a china hutch. I feel so fortunate that we found Bruce and would give him the highest of recommendations. He really is a Master of many things! He is also very easy to talk to and to work with.

I️ hired Roger for a pretty big job... I️ just bought a 1400 square foot condo with high ceilings and a ton of molding. It was in rough shape and everything needed to be painted... molding, walls, ceiling, doors, etc. It took several days to complete. Roger and his team were very professional and courteous. They showed up when they said they were going to and took a lot of care when working. They did a great job and Roger did not consider the job complete until he was sure I️ was happy with the finished product. Price was very reasonable for the scope of the project. I️ would definitely hire Silva Painting again.

Amazonia’s did a great job installing an epoxy floor in my garage and painting the walls and ceiling. Their experience in the process helped me to solve issues with floor cracks, so now I have a beautiful, durable garage floor. The garage is almost like an extra room now. They were responsive and showed up as scheduled. (The Photo is from an iPhone, so there is shadowing, due to the lighting)

I recently had David replace my 2 openers and do the springs and pullys on my garage doors. He gave me many options and let me pick what I wanted. The openers are fantastic and run so quiet. The doors have never ever worked as smooth as they do now. Better than new. His price was perfect and did way above and beyond what was requiered. The garage was cleaner after he was done than it’s been in years . Was 5 minutes early and ready to work no problems. Then he taught me about all the new features and hooked my phone app up to. Best technician ever. So polite and just a good guy . I highly recommend him.

We could not be happier with Dennis's work....our house looks amazing. It is a late 1800's construction that required a complete lead abatement and restoration. Dennis and his crew stripped it down to bare wood meticulously, replaced clapboards and trim, repaired the back porch and antique garage doors, and today it is a show piece, which the Historical Society wants to include in their next house tour! Dennis was instrumental in guiding us toward the perfect color scheme and design, which admittedly was not our original idea, but in retrospect turned out perfectly....we can't thank Dennis and Pro Quality enough for all they did. Dennis goes above and beyond to get every last detail just right, and his customer's satisfaction is clearly the highest priority. A true master at what he does....

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

How do you choose a garage door?

When garage door repair isn’t an option — perhaps the current door is beyond fixing or you want to upgrade to a quieter, more energy-efficient model — it’s time to buy a new one. But choosing a garage door is not as simple as it sounds, even when you know the right size for your home. A wide range of materials, styles and finishes are available, and each factor influences the cost. Garage doors are made of aluminum, steel, vinyl, fiberglass, masonite, wood (typically cedar or mahogany), or a composite of several materials. They may be insulated against cold or heat. Traditional and modern styles include raised panel, carriage house or crossbuck. Most styles have window or arch options, and are available in different wood finishes and neutral colors. Because garage doors account for a large part of a home’s exterior, their appearance is usually a homeowner’s top priority. An attractive garage door can increase a home’s curb appeal and resale value.

How much does garage door repair cost?

When a garage door goes off the track, the spring breaks, the door is dented or the garage door opener is on the fritz, a professional garage door repair specialist can help. The cost to have a garage door fixed varies, but the national average cost of garage door repair is $70-$110. The extent of the damage and the size and material of the door will affect the final cost. A garage door repair company generally charges a national average of $80 for a service call, which includes the first hour of labor and service, such as testing and inspecting the garage door and opener. Apart from labor, the garage door repair costs hinge on buying replacements parts. For example, a new spring costs an average of $60. Expect to pay several hundred dollars, though, if the door is beyond repair; a new garage door ranges in price from $200 to $4,000, and most homeowners spend an average of $800-$1,200.

How much does it cost to install a new garage door opener?

Your new garage door opener cost will vary based on the model you purchase and how long installation takes. Typically, installation pros charge by the hour, although if the pro is also selling the garage door opener they may have a flat fee for the product with installation. The national average for new garage door opener costs (with installation) is between $390 and $650, although the national average cost for the opener purchased alone may be in the $150-$300 range. The three most common types of openers are chain-drive, screw-drive and belt-drive. The chain-drive costs the least but makes the most noise. The belt-drive is typically the quietest and the most expensive. You can expect to pay about the same amount for installation for any of the three styles. The lifespan of a garage door opener is approximately 10 years, depending on quality. A pro may provide opener repairs for the cost of their service call fee or they may charge a flat fee, such as $100 for opener repair. Here are some examples of new garage door opener average costs, including installation:

  • Contractor-grade garage door opener with installation: $300.
  • Chain-drive opener with installation and one remote: $350.
  • Belt-drive opener with installation and two remotes: $400
  • Top-of-the-line opener with ¾-horsepower battery backup, belt drive and nearly soundless operation: $475
    • The majority of higher-end garage door openers are “smart” products and will connect via app to your smartphone for remote access.
